YNW Melly Arrested for Double Murder

He was charged with first-degree murder, accused of killing two YNW rappers and staging the crime scene to look like a drive-by shooting

    By Pitchfork

Florida rappers YNW Melly (real name: Jamell Demons) and YNW Bortlen (real name: Cortlen Henry) have been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, the South Florida Sentinel reports. The murders of two members of Demons’ own YNW crew took place on October 26 in South Florida. When reached by Pitchfork, representatives and lawyers for Melly declined to comment.

Miramar Police say Demons, 19, shot and killed aspiring rappers Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams, 21, and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr., 19. Police also claim that Demons and Henry staged the crime scene to give it the appearance of a drive-by shooting. Williams and Thomas sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and according to police, Henry drove their bodies to a Miramar, Florida emergency room. The specific location of the South Florida shooting is unknown.

On Thursday morning, a judge ordered that Demons remain in jail without bond, the Sun Sentinel reports.

On October 31, Demons’ attorney shared the rapper’s reaction to the deaths of Williams and Thomas. “He’s sad, he’s upset, obviously,” said attorney Bradford Cohen. “Those were his best friends.”

Earlier this year, YNW Melly released a new Kanye West-featuring project called We All Shine.

YNW MELLY: State Seeks Death Penalty In Best Friend Murder Case

    TMZ News

YNW Melly's murder case just got way more serious than it already was ... because the State of Florida is seeking the death penalty.

As you know ... YNW Melly has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Cops say the rapper shot two of his friends back in October, then staged the crime scene to look like a drive-by shooting.

According to new legal docs, obtained by TMZ, the State intends to seek the death penalty against Melly.

In the docs, the State says it believes it can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Melly killed his friends for financial gain, the murder was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel, and he committed homicide in a cold, calculated and premeditated manner. The State also believes Melly is a criminal gang member.

As we've reported ... cops say YNW Melly and his friend, Cortlen Henry, shot victims Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr. in the head, torso and back. Police say Melly and Henry shot up their own car to make it look like a drive-by, and then dropped the victims off at the ER, where they were pronounced dead.

YNW death penalty fears continue as Cortlen Henry hearing delayed until September

YNW Melly (Jamell Maurice Demons) death penalty rumors and speculation have been sweeping the internet in recent weeks.

The ongoing rumors and speculation, centered on fears among fans that YNW Melly could face the death penalty, began to spread on social media as the hearing date for Cortlen Henry’s (aka YNW Bortlen) case approached.

The case was originally scheduled to take place on August 13 but was moved back to September 17, based on Broward County Clerk of Courts’ official records.

There are a lot of people online who are expressing concern that the death penalty was coming for YNW Melly, with some going as far as to claim it already happened.

    It has not.

The speculation was caused due to the recent news that the hearing for Henry was delayed. This news caused many fans of YNW Melly to hear for the first time that the death penalty was on the table in his case.

Despite the fact that the case is not over with yet, there are still many fans who are scared that the rapper will end up executed if convicted.

In 2019, Miramar police arrested YNW Melly, who was 19 years old, and Cortlen Henry on charges related to the shooting deaths of rappers Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr.

The Murder On My Mind rapper, who is now 21, turned himself over to the police on February 13 and was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

YNW Melly murder case: Anthony Williams, Christopher Thomas Jr. shootings 3 years later

    By Corey Arwood
    TC Palm

A state prosecutor “wouldn’t even begin to speculate” about the date of Jamell Demons' double capital murder trial, saying the legal system moves slowly.

Meanwhile, Gifford rapper YNW Melly approaches a third year in Broward County Jail charged in the murders of friends Anthony Williams — aka YNW Sakchaser — and Christopher Thomas Jr. — aka YNW Juvy.

The state attorney’s office said the charges and punishments sought for Demons, 22, and his recording partner Cortlen Henry, 22 — aka YNW Bortlen — remain status quo, meaning the state still seeks the death penalty for Demons on two first-degree murder charges and life in prison for Henry on two accessory after the fact charges, if he’s not also convicted on first-degree murder charges.

Both men will appear in Broward County Court in Fort Lauderdale Oct. 28 for status hearings.

Henry was released from jail June 2020 on $180,000 bond, for house arrest. Circuit Judge Andrew Siegel denied Demons’ attempt at release after he reportedly contracted COVID-19 earlier that year.

Henry was arrested again April 2021 and charged with probation violation after he was tracked to bars and gentlemen’s clubs over two days in late March against the condition that he was only to leave his approved residence for work, court records show.

In late August, the court reinstated the terms of his bail and increased his degree of confinement to “Level 1 house arrest” which confines him to his court-approved Miami address for 24 hours a day.

Thomas, 19, of Gifford, and Williams, 21, of Fort Pierce, were shot and killed Oct. 26, 2018. Demons and Henry were jailed in February 2019, according to court records.

Although the system moves “slowly,” as Broward Assistant State Attorney Kristine Bradley said, court records show a steady stream of activity behind closed court doors or in online hearings and depositions for both cases.

Among court filings this year are a report from an FBI cell phone forensics expert and a Florida Department of Law Enforcement glass fragment analysis.

Demons’ defense team has largely deposed law enforcement officials and questioned Miramar police detectives, according to court records.

In mid-October, prosecutors requested a DNA sample from Demons, and ordered a oral swab to compare with DNA from a yellow jacket found in the vehicle where they say the shooting occurred. The state said Anthony Williams' DNA was identified on the jacket.

Civil cases seeking monetary damages have been brought to court by families of both Thomas and Williams who are represented by personal injury and wrongful death firm Steinger, Greene, Feiner, Phillips & Hunt.

In August, a YNW Melly album was released, with Demons behind bars, called "Just A Matter of Slime," much like Melly vs. Melvin in 2019.

Four days after its Aug. 12 release, a post on the YNW Melly Instagram account states Demons was placed on roughly three-month probation restriction from video visits because he promoted the album in video visits with his manager.

    Charges

Both Henry and Demons pleaded not guilty to the shootings.

Police and prosecutors said the pair staged a drive-by shooting with Demons as the gunman, and Henry as the driver, who took Williams and Thomas to the Everglades and then drove their bodies to a hospital in Miramar.

In a court filing with the state's grounds for seeking the death penalty, prosecutors cited state law that said the "capital felony was committed for pecuniary (monetary) gain."

The state attorney's office would not elaborate beyond that for motive, but in the wrongful death suit lawyers state in the complaint the shooting was over "prospects of large amounts of money" and with "less people splitting up the prospective money, the people on the receiving end will get more."

In an August 2019 bond hearing for Henry, Bradley stated Henry drove Williams and Thomas to the Everglades, where Demons shot them both in the head and staged a drive-by, shooting their bodies again and shooting the exterior of the Jeep.

According to Miramar police investigation records, eight men were at the Fort Lauderdale New Era Sound Studio planning to return to Demons’ rented home in Miramar.

Henry’s Fort Lauderdale attorney, Fred Haddad said then that the evidence showed Henry "never fired a weapon" and that "the shooting by all evidence occurred from the rear left seat; Mr. Henry was the driver."

State attorneys and police detectives said Henry helped Demons with a cover-up — dropping the men off at a hospital, fabricating a story, concealing Demons' involvement and later retrieving the disposed weapons.

Initially, police said Henry told them Williams and Thomas were victims of a drive-by shooting along Interstate 75 near Miramar Parkway, as they headed toward Demons’ rented home in the Sunset Lakes housing development.

Forensic investigators searched the area but found no evidence of a shooting, according to investigation records.

Bradley said Henry drove Williams and Thomas to the Everglades, where Demons shot them both in the head and staged a drive-by.

Rapper YNW Melly asks for speedy trial in murder case

    By RAFAEL OLMEDA
    SOUTH FLORIDA SUN SENTINEL

Rapper Jamell Demons, better known by the professional name YNW Melly, has told a Broward judge he is tired of waiting and wants to go on trial for murder as soon as possible.

Demons, 22, has been in custody for nearly three years, accused of murdering two close friends and fellow rappers after a recording session and then trying to make it look like a random drive-by shooting.

He faces the possibility of a death sentence if convicted.

Speedy trial demands are not uncommon, but they are rare in capital murder cases. Defense lawyers usually prefer to have as much time as possible to prepare their cases so they can sow the seeds of reasonable doubt or, if they lose, convince the jury to spare the defendant’s life.

It was not clear Monday whether Demons is pushing for a speedy trial on his own or with the approval of his lawyer, Stuart Adelstein. Attempts to reach his attorney Monday were not successful.

The U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to a speedy trial. Most defendants waive that right, but in Florida, a defendant can demand a speedy trial at any point in the legal process, forcing proceedings to begin within 50 days.

For Demons, it would mean a trial date in mid-January.

According to investigators, Demons left a recording session on Oct. 26, 2018, with longtime friends Anthony D’Andre Williams and Christopher Thomas, Jr., fellow rappers who went by YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy, respectively. The driver was another friend, Cortlen Malik Henry.

Demons is accused of shooting the two passengers in Miramar, near U.S. 27 and Pembroke Road. Police also accused him of conspiring with Henry to make it look like a drive-by. When Henry drove the wounded passengers to Memorial Hospital Miramar, Demons was nowhere to be found, according to police.

Henry, 22, is also charged with murder, though investigators have said Demons was the only gunman. Henry is also charged with accessory after the fact.

Henry’s lawyer, Fred Haddad, said Monday he will ask for his client, who does not face the death penalty, to be tried separately.

Prosecutors request photo's of YNW Melly's tattoos to prove 'gang affiliation' while seeking death penalty in murder case

    By Aleia Woods
    XXL Magazine

The newest development in YNW Melly's double-homicide case has prosecutors seeking photographs of the rapper's tattoos to prove his gang affiliations.

According to court documents obtained by XXL on Wednesday (Feb. 9), dated for Tuesday (Feb. 8), the State of Florida is pushing for Judge Andrew Siegel—who is presiding over YNW Melly's case in connection to the Oct. 26, 2018 murders of his two associates, YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser - to order that photos be taken of Melly to "document the gang affiliated tattoos" on his body.

The document notes that the pictures of Melly, born Jamell Demons, would not be for the purpose of reenactment, but adds that "this is relevant as the State has previously identified the aggravator for seeking the death penalty as the crime was committed by a criminal gang member as identified in Florida Statue 874.03."

Based on documents from April of 2019, prosecutors filed a motion seeking the death penalty for YNW Melly, offering the following as reasons the motion should be granted, without reasonable doubt: "the capital felony was committed for pecuniary gain, the capital felony was especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel, the capital felony was a homicide and was committed in a cold, calculated, and premeditated manner without any pretense of moral or legal justification" and lastly, which is the prosecutor's argument, "the capital felony was committed by a criminal gang member."

One month before the courts pushed for Melly to receive the death penalty for two first-degree murder charges, the "Banana Split" rhymer entered a not guilty plea for the killings of Juvy (real name Christopher Thomas Jr.) and Sakchaser (Anthony Williams).

The Florida native has been behind bars ever since he was arrested.

Melly and Bortlen both initially claimed that Juvy and Sakchaser were killed in a drive-by shooting, but investigators in the case later determined that the young men were murdered inside the Jeep Compass they were riding in with Melly and Bortlen.

Detectives in the case uncovered evidence allowing them to believe that Melly was the shooter and sat in the left passenger seat of the SUV. Claims also include that Melly and Bortlen drove around with the deceased bodies in the car for an extensive period of time.

YNW Melly's manager at the time, Jameson Francois', was named in the incident as well. Francois was accused by authorities of providing misinformation to the case's investigator. Apparently, Francois, who also goes by the name Track, provided false statements to law officials and claimed to be unaware of Melly's location around the time of the shooting.

However, documents state that the manager spoke with Melly following the deadly shooting and drove him out of the area afterwards.

Based on court documents, YNW Melly has a court hearing scheduled for Feb. 16 and his trial is set to begin on March 7.

The evidence presented reportedly proves that YNW Melly pulled the trigger and killed his two friends.

Prosecutors are reportedly working hard to try and get Florida rapper YNW Melly (Jamell Demons) into the execution chair, presenting sixty-six new pages of DNA evidence that prove that he pulled the trigger and killed his two friends, YNW Sakchaser (Anthony Williams) and YNW Juvy (Christopher Thomas Jr.) in October 2018.

According to a report from DJ Akademiks, the "Murder on my Mind" rapper is a month away from his double-murder trial starting and things aren't looking good for him. With only a few weeks before the trial kicks off, sixty-six new pages of DNA evidence have been presented by prosecutors, reportedly proving that the gunshots were fired from YNW Melly's seat in the car, using phone records to show that the rapper was in the area at the time of the shooting. Ballistics reports show that all of the shots that were fired came from Melly's position in the car and surveillance footage allegedly shows Melly getting into the vehicle, in the seat that the shots were fired from.

Evidence was also presented from the drive-by shooting that Melly and his partner, YNW Bortlen, used as an alibi, claiming that the shooting happened after YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy were killed. It was also done by the same gun, which would mean that Melly reportedly shot up the car afterward.

With all of this new evidence being presented just one month before the trial begins, DJ Akademiks suggests that the case could be postponed to allow Melly's legal team to craft a proper defense against the prosecution. This could get very bad for the rapper as prosecutors are strictly looking to give him the death penalty, and not life in prison. They say Melly is a "heartless and ruthless" individual who killed his two friends in cold blood.

What do you think about this new information? We will continue to keep you updated as news releases from YNW Melly's upcoming double-murder trial.
