Miguel Angel Prieto Sentenced to Life in 2018 CA Murders

    April 25, 2018

Long Beach man charged with killing ex-wife in Covina and Rancho Cucamonga woman in Azusa

A Long Beach man accused of fatally shooting his former wife in her Covina apartment is also a suspect in an Azusa shooting that left one woman dead and one man wounded, police announced Wednesday.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office last week charged Miguel Angel Prieto, 43, with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. He will be arraigned May 10 at Pomona Superior Court.

A relative found a wounded Maria Perez in her apartment in the 1300 block of West San Bernardino Road in Covina on April 11. Perez, 42, died at the scene.

Covina police tracked down Prieto to a fast food restaurant parking lot in Long Beach several hours later and arrested him. They also recovered a revolver.

Prieto is on probation for assaulting his former wife’s boyfriend in 2015.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s Homicide Lt. Joe Mendoza believes Prieto went looking for his ex-wife’s boyfriend on Feb. 9 and ended up in the 1500 block of West McKinley Avenue in Azusa just after 9:50 p.m. where he allegedly shot two people in a parked car.

Rocio Sandoval, 38, of Rancho Cucamonga died two days later from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the coroner’s office.

Mendoza said Sandoval’s acquaintance, a Los Angeles man, was shot but survived. He thinks the shooting is a case of mistaken identity.

Sandoval and her friend went to Azusa that night and were in the car when the suspect showed up, confronted them and shot into the car, according to Mendoza.

Prieto is being held without bail at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.

Long Beach man pleads guilty to 2018 fatal shootings of his wife, another woman in mistaken identity

    By KTLA Digital Staff

A Long Beach man has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting two women — his estranged wife and another woman who was with a man he mistakenly thought was his wife’s boyfriend in 2018, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Miguel Angel Prieto, 47, entered his plea to one count each of first-degree murder and second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, the DA’s office reported. The fatal shootings happened over a three-month period in 2018.

According to prosecutors, on April 11, 2018, Prieto went to the Covina home of his estranged wife, Maria Perez, shot her several times, and then fled the house. Authorities were called to the scene, where Perez was pronounced dead.

Prieto was located in Long Beach hours after his estranged wife’s murder and arrested in connection with her fatal shooting, prosecutors said.

During the homicide investigation, law enforcement discovered Prieto was in Azusa on the night of Feb. 9, 2018, when he saw a man, who he believed was his estranged wife’s boyfriend, with a woman in a car in the 1500 block of West McKenley Avenue.

“The man was sitting with a woman in a car when Prieto walked up to the pair, spoke to them and later shot them,” the DA’s office said in a statement.

The woman in the car, who was identified by authorities as 38-year-old Rocio Sandoval, died from her injuries. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and survived.

Prosecutors said Prieto was involved in a third shooting on April 7, 2018, when he visited a Long Beach restaurant that belongs to his estranged wife’s uncle and shot at a woman. No other details about that shooting were released.

Prieto is scheduled to be sentenced in March.

“Given the senseless and brazen crimes committed by Miguel Angel Prieto, he will be sentenced to two consecutive life sentences,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.

Long Beach man gets life in prison for slaying 2 women in San Gabriel Valley

    By Nathaniel Percy
    San Gabriel Valley Tribune

A Long Beach man was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday, March 3, for killing his estranged wife and another woman in addition to injuring a man in shootings in the San Gabriel Valley, authorities said.

Miguel Angel Prieto, 46, pleaded guilty last week in Pomona Superior Court to one count each of first-degree murder and second-degree murder and two other counts, said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

The shootings left 42-year-old Maria Perez of Covina, his estranged wife, and 38-year-old Rocio Sandoval of Rancho Cucamonga dead and left a Los Angeles man injured, Santiago said.

Sandoval and the man were shot by Prieto as they sat in the man’s car in Azusa on Feb. 9, 2018.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials have said they believe Prieto shot the two, identified as acquaintances, after he mistook the man as Perez’s boyfriend. Sandoval just happened to be there.

On April 7, 2018, Prieto also shot at a woman while visiting Perez’s uncle’s restaurant in Long Beach, but she escaped injury, Santiago said.

Four days later, Prieto went to Perez’s Covina apartment and shot her multiple times and fled, Santiago said.

Prieto was found by police later that day at a Del Taco in Long Beach and police found a revolver in his van, Covina police said. He was initially booked into jail on Perez’s murder and detectives later connected him to the other shootings.

Prieto would be eligible for possible parole after 40 years.
