Sheriff: Arrest made in murder of a Williamsburg Co. postal worker

By Live Web 5 News Staff

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office says an arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a Williamsburg County postal worker.

Trevor Seward, 22, has been arrested on a state murder charge in connection to Irene Pressley’s murder, according to the United States Postal Inspection Service.

Seward was reportedly seen shortly before the incident holding what was believe to be an AR-15, according to the affidavit.

Multiple .223 shell casings were found near the scene on Senate Road, according to the sheriff’s office.

A fingerprint was found on a United States Postal Service package that was recovered from the crime scene by the USPS forensics division that was later confirmed to be that of Seward.

Pressley, 64, died Monday in the Morrisonville Road area after being shot while delivering the mail, deputies say. She worked with the U.S. Postal Service for almost 22 years.

United States Postal Inspection Service spokesperson Jessica Adams said earlier this week that if the person responsible for Pressley’s death is caught and convicted, they could face a federal death penalty.

Since the shooting, residents of Williamsburg County placed white bows on their mailboxes in memory of Pressley.

Pressley was laid to rest at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John AME Church in Andrews.

Man charged in shooting death of SC mail carrier denied bond

    By WBTW News

ANDREWS, SC (WBTW) – A man has been denied bond on murder charges in the shooting death of a mail carrier that shocked a community.

Irene Pressley was shot and killed while on her mail route, a route she serviced for 22 years. Her death has attracted national attention and prompted heartfelt tributes from the community.

Trevor Raekwon Seward, 22, of Andrews, was arrested on Saturday and charged with murder in connection to the shooting. Seward was denied bond on Sunday.

Seward, if convicted, could face a federal death penalty. According to an arrest warrant obtained by News13, Seward shot Pressley multiple times at the corner of Senate and Morrisville Roads. He was seen beforehand carrying what looked to be an AR-15.

Responders found multiple .223 shell casings on the scene afterward.

Investigators were able to locate a fingerprint on a USPS parcel. It was taken from the crime scene by the Forensic Laboratory Services Division of the USPS. Investigators were able to confirm the fingerprint belonged to Seward.

People who knew Irene Pressley describe her as a loving person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. White bows are attached to each mailbox along Irene’s route to honor her.

“She always kept a smile on her face and always tried to help people out when she could,” said Waynette Morris, who lives on Irene’s route.

Many of those who live on Irene’s route say what happened to her has made them more aware. “Work out here 22 years and then get killed doing her job, it’s sad,” said Wilma Smith, who lives on the route. “I don’t know what’s going on with people.”

Death penalty possible for men charged in killing of postal carrier in SC, feds say

By Noah Feit and John Monk
    The State

Two men are facing federal murder charges in connection with the killing of a U.S. postal carrier who was shot and killed last year while delivering mail on her rural South Carolina route in Williamsburg County. A third man is facing drug charges related to the postal carrier’s murder.

The new charges were announced Wednesday by U.S. Attorney Peter McCoy, who said that Andrews residents Trevor Raekwon Seward, 22, and Jerome Terrell Davis, 28, were charged in a six-count federal indictment for their direct roles in the killing of Irene Pressley — a 64-year-old mother and grandmother.

If convicted, Seward and Davis could face the death penalty. Prosecutors said they have made no final decision on whether to seek the death penalty.

Seward was the triggerman and used an assault-type rifle of the brand DoubleStar Corporation Model Star-15, 5.56 caliber, the indictment said.

Ricky Jesus Barajas, 28, of Santa Rosa, California, was also charged by the federal government for his role in a drug conspiracy that investigators said was connected to the Sept. 23, 2019, shooting, the U.S. Attorney said.

Pressley was dead when she was found inside her vehicle by a passerby. The 20-plus-year veteran of the post office was delivering mail on her route when she was shot multiple times around 3 pm with a semi-automatic weapon, according to an indictment and other records in the case.

The motive in the case appears to have been an attempt to steal a package containing marijuana, McCoy said.

“This will not stand in our backyard,” McCoy said at a Wednesday news conference in Kingstree, the county seat of Williamsburg County. “First and foremost, my heart goes out to Ms. Pressley’s family for their profound loss. She was an exceptional woman who spent a lifetime in service of her community,”

Seward and Davis were initially arrested on state murder chargesin the weeks following Pressley’s death. They have been in jail since then.

The federal charges came after an extensive joint federal, state, and local investigation involving more than 70 law enforcement officers, the U.S. Attorney’s office said.

Seward is accused of shooting Pressley multiple times, and numerous shell casings were found at the scene, officials said Wednesday. Forensic tests from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service showed at least one fingerprint on a piece of mail connected Seward to the murder, according to a Williamsburg County sheriff’s news release.

Seward and Davis were charged with several crimes related to the murder and a drug conspiracy during the time of the murder, according to the indictment. They include killing Pressley “with premeditation and malice aforethought” while she was engaged in her official duties as a mail carrier; and obstructing the delivery of U.S. mail by means of actual or threatened force.

The killing took place about 3 pm at the intersection of two rural two-lane roads, Senate Road and Morrisville Road, about 20 miles east of Kingstree, according to a state warrant in the case.

Seward, Davis, and Barajas are charged in a marijuana distribution conspiracy, according to the indictment.

Davis and Barajas are charged with using a telephone to facilitate the drug conspiracy on the day of the murder, according to the indictment.

Additionally, Seward is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and carrying a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence and causing the murder of Pressley by shooting her, the indictment said.

“When a member of our postal family is attacked, we pull out all stops to track down the perpetrator and deliver justice,” said Tommy D. Coke, the postal inspector in charge of the Atlanta Division. Investigators from various law enforcement agencies worked more than 25,000 hours “to deliver justice for Irene,” Coke said.

If convicted, Seward and Davis face a minimum sentence of life in federal prison, and Barajas faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the 3rd Circuit Solicitor’s Office, North Charleston Police Department, and the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Nick Bianchi is prosecuting the case.

Pressley was survived by her husband and their five children, among other family members. She was a leader in her church, and was known as “The Mother” at the U.S. Postal Service by her co-workers, according to her obituary.

Trial date set for men accused in killing of SC postal worker

    By Ted Clifford
    The State

Two men charged in the murder of postal worker Irene Pressley are set to go on trial in federal court in October.

Jerome Terrell Davis, 28, and Trevor Raekwon Seward, 22, are accused of shooting Pressley on her postal route in September 2019 in order to steal a package containing marijuana.

In June, their co-defendant, Ricky Jesus Barajas, 28, pled guilty to drug trafficking charges in connection with the killing. Davis and Seward could be facing the death penalty if they are convicted in the shooting of the 64-year-old grandmother. The two defendants were allegedly trying to steal a shipment of marijuana from Pressley’s mail truck when Seward shot Pressley repeatedly with a semi-automatic rifle, according to U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Jury selection in this case is set for Oct. 11, with the trial set to begin on Oct. 17. Federal prosecutors announced the upcoming trial Friday at a news conference honoring the work of South Carolina’s United States Postal Inspectors.

“Their work is critical,” said U.S. Attorney Corey F. Ellis.

A 20-year veteran of the postal service, Pressley’s killing drew national law enforcement attention to Williamsburg County. Over 70 law enforcement agencies were ultimately involved in the investigation.

In addition to the prosecution in Pressley’s murder, T. DeWayne Pearson, chief of the criminal division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, highlighted the Postal Inspector’s efforts in investigating a lottery scam run out of Myrtle Beach, the arson of a post office in Bishopville, as well other crimes including armed robbery, drug trafficking, and financial scams.

Man found guilty in 2019 murder of Williamsburg Co. postal worker, documents say

    By Tonya Brown
    WPDE News

WILLIAMSBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A federal jury found a man guilty on Tuesday for the 2019 murder of a South Carolina postal worker, according to court documents.

Trevor Raekwon Seward has been found guilty of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence constituting murder, robbery, felon in possession of a firearm or ammunition and drug conspiracy.

Irene Pressley, 64, was a mail carrier who was found shot to death on September 23, 2019, inside her vehicle along her mail route in rural Williamsburg County.

According to a release from US Dept. of Justice for South Carolina, Seward was expecting a delivery for two pounds of marijuana that was shipped from California, and instead of delivering the package, Pressley left a form in his mailbox that said the authorized recipient would need to come to the post office to claim the package.

Seward then confronted Pressley and failed to get the marijuana package, so he returned home, per the release.

A short time later, Seward left his house with the AR-15 and found Pressley driving on Senate Road when he fired approximately 20 rounds into the back of her vehicle, striking her multiple times, the department said.

Seward then reportedly got into Pressley’s vehicle and drove about three miles away, where officials said he left Pressley and her vehicle in a ditch on an access road to a hunt club.

While on the access road, Seward removed mail from Pressley’s vehicle and searched for the package intended for him or any other items of value, the release stated.

Officials said the package of marijuana that had been shipped to Seward was later found on Senate Road where Pressley was shot by Seward.

    Seward faces the following sentences:

    • A mandatory penalty of life imprisonment for the murder of Pressley
    • Up to life imprisonment for the use of firearm in furtherance of Pressley’s murder
    • Up to twenty years imprisonment for the robbery of Pressley
    • Up to ten years for illegal possession of a firearm
    • Up to five years imprisonment for the marijuana conspiracy conviction

He's expected to be sentenced within the next 90 days.

Seward's trial began last week and wrapped up Tuesday. He didn't testify in his own defense, according to court documents.

A pretrial hearing took place for Jerome Terrell Davis Wednesday morning, who prosecutors said was also involved in the shooting. His trial is set to begin on February 6.

Man enters guilty plea to robbing Andrews postal carrier, drug conspiracy

    By Patrick Phillips
    WCSC News

FLORENCE, S.C. (WCSC) - An Andrews man has pleaded guilty to his involvement in the 2019 robbery of a mail carrier and his role in a marijuana conspiracy.

Jerome Terrell Davis, 30, faces up to 20 years in prison for the robbery of Postal Carrier Irene Pressley on Sept. 23, 2019, and up to five years in prison for the marijuana conspiracy conviction.

“The guilty plea by the defendant sends a strong message that the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and our partners will work tirelessly to bring justice against individuals responsible for causing harm to our Postal employees,” Tommy D. Coke, the Postal

Inspector in Charge of the Atlanta Division, said. “Irene Pressley was a dedicated public servant in her community. I want to sincerely thank our partners for their support and commitment in identifying and holding accountable the individuals involved in this case to the full extent of the law.”

“The robbery and murder of Irene Pressley was a truly senseless act of violence,” Williamsburg County Sheriff Stephen Gardner said. “With the guilty plea entered by Mr. Davis and the jury’s conviction of Mr. Seward, we are pleased that the individuals who committed such a malicious crime will be held accountable for their actions.”

A jury in the United States District Court convicted Seward last week of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and conspiracy to traffic marijuana for his role in the murder and robbery of Pressley.

United States District Judge Donald C. Coggins accepted Davis’ plea and will sentence Davis after receiving and reviewing a pre-sentence report that will be prepared by the United States Probation Office.

2 Andrews men to be sentenced in murder, robbery of postal worker

    By Courtney Rowles
    WPDE News

FLORENCE, S.C. (WPDE) — Trevor Seward and Jerome Davis are scheduled to be sentenced in federal court Thursday in the murder and robbery of mail carrier, Irene Pressley.

Seward will be sentenced after he was convicted at trial for the murder and robbery, which happened after Pressley refused to deliver two pounds of marijuana to Seward.

Davis is being sentenced after pleading guilty to his role in the robbery.

The evidence established that on September 23, 2019, Seward and Davis were anticipating two pounds of marijuana to be delivered that was shipped from California through USPS.

Rather than deliver the package, Pressley put a form in Seward’s mailbox stating that the authorized recipient would need to come to the post office to claim the package, according to a release from the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

Davis picked up Seward, who was armed with an AR-15, and they searched for Pressley, per the release.

Davis dropped Seward off on Senate Road, where Seward fired approximately twenty rounds into the back of Pressley’s vehicle, which struck her multiple times, the release read.

United States District Judge Donald C. Coggins, Jr. presided over the trial and will impose the sentences.

Family of slain Andrews postal worker share impact statements as judge hands down life sentence

    By Tonya Brown
    WPDE News

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — U.S. District Judge Donald C. Coggins, Jr. sentenced Trevor Raekwon Seward to life in prison Thursday for the 2019 murder of South Carolina postal worker 64-year-old Irene Pressley.

A jury found Seward has been found guilty in January of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence constituting murder, robbery, felon in possession of a firearm or ammunition and drug conspiracy.

Pressley was a mail carrier who was found shot to death on September 23, 2019, inside her vehicle along her mail route in rural Williamsburg County.

According to a release from the U.S. Dept. of Justice for South Carolina, Seward was expecting a delivery for two pounds of marijuana that was shipped from California, and instead of delivering the package, Pressley left a form in his mailbox that said the authorized recipient would need to come to the post office to claim the package.

Nine family members, friends and fellow coworkers spoke during the hearing about what Pressley meant to them. Her church friend, Eva Green, addressed the court.

"When I heard that she was killed, it didn't register at first. I couldn't eat. Because we just had talked that Sunday at church," said Green.

Pressley's siblings said her death has left a hole in their hearts. Her sister, Vernelle Gibson Oates, said she talked with her sister about retiring just prior to her being shot and killed on the job. Oates looked at Seward and asked him a question.

"What did it profit you to take her life? It didn't profit you nothing. Why did you take my sister's life? She was innocent. She was innocent," said Gibson Oates.

Elisha Hubbard said she had just talked with Pressley, who was her sister, not five minutes before she was gunned down on her postal route. Hubbard said Pressley stopped by her home for a short visit. Five minutes later, her sister had been shot to death. She told the judge Pressley's death impacted her then 97-year-old father, who looked forward to getting daily treats from Pressley.

"This affected my family. Actually, took the life of my dad. He gave up. Because you took his daughter's life.

Hubbard had a stern message for Seward:

"You were supposed to walk the earth and do something positive to help others. He didn't make you an animal to be caged up. You didn't have to take my sister's life," said Hubbard.

Seward appeared to be looking at those who spoke directly to him, even at times nodding his head as if he agreed with them.

The judge told Seward that he could address the court. Seward, dressed in his navy blue jail jumpsuit, stood up to talk to the judge.

"Your honor, I would like -- don't want to cause any more confusion. I don't have anything to say, " said Seward.

At that point, Judge Coggins said a few words to Seward before he sentenced him to life in prison.

"Although, you are, in all likelihood, are going to spend your life in federal prison. And how you spend your life is the choice of your making," said Coggins.

Jerome Terrell Davis, 30, also pleaded guilty in Pressley's death. Davis faces up to 20 years in prison for the robbery of Pressley and up to five years in prison for the marijuana conspiracy conviction. He was sentenced Thursday to 25 years.
