Death Penalty Off the Table for Jordyn Jones and Barron Brantley in 2019 GA Murder of Alexis Crawford

Atlanta college student died of asphyxiation, police say; roommate, roommate's boyfriend charged with murder

The 21-year-old Clark University Atlanta student whose body was found on Friday died of asphyxiation, according to police.

Alexis Crawford's body was found at a DeKalb County park some 11 miles from her off-campus apartment one week after she was reported missing. Two suspects -- her roommate and the roommate's boyfriend -- were arrested Saturday and are in police custody.

Jordyn Jones and her boyfriend, Barron Brantley, both 21, are each charged with malice murder in Crawford's death. Both suspects were being held without bond at the Fulton County Jail.

Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields said a motive hasn't been established yet, but she said that Crawford filed a police report on Oct. 27 describing "unwanted kissing and touching" by Brantley.

Alexandria Crawford told police she last heard from her sister Alexis on the night of Oct. 30. Alexis had texted Alexandria to ask: "What are you doing for the weekend?" Her sister responded, "Nothing."

Crawford was last seen in public that same day at a store along Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in southwest Atlanta. She was reported missing on Nov. 1.

Jones told police she took her roommate to a liquor store on the night of Oct. 30. Police later released surveillance photos of Crawford inside the liquor store. Jones claimed she last saw her roommate at 12:30 a.m. and didn't see her in their apartment later that morning when she left for class.

Crawford's phone, identification card and debit card were not found in the apartment, but her phone charger and keys were inside, according to a police report.

The student's death was "the worst possible news," Clark University Atlanta President George French Jr. said

“Our deepest prayers and thoughts are with her family,” French wrote in a letter to the university Friday. “Tonight we mourn together.”

Couple indicted in slaying of Clark Atlanta student

    By Shaddi Abusaid
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The couple accused of killing a 21-year-old Clark Atlanta student before leaving her body in a plastic bin at a DeKalb County park were indicted Friday, authorities said.

Jordyn Jones, 22, and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Barron Brantley, are charged in the Oct. 31 death of Alexis Crawford, who was Jones’ roommate. The murder shocked the community and made national headlines.

Jones and Brantley were indicted Friday on two counts of felony murder as well as one count each of murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and concealing the death of another, authorities said. Brantley also was indicted on one count of aggravated sodomy for allegedly sexually assaulting Crawford five days before her murder, a spokesman for the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office said.

Police said Crawford was strangled and smothered with a plastic bag before the couple took her body from the apartment she shared with Jones and left it in the park.
The missing Clark Atlanta senior was the subject of a weeklong search before her body was discovered Nov. 8, AJC.com previously reported. Jones and Brantley were linked to the crime and arrested.

Atlanta police Detective Mike Young testified in November that Brantley told police he choked Crawford after she and Jones got into a fight on Halloween morning. “He admitted to choking Ms. Crawford,” Young said during a hearing in Fulton County Magistrate Court. “While he was choking Ms. Crawford, Ms. Jones put a plastic bag over her head.”Crawford and Jones had been close friends while studying at Clark Atlanta, and Jones visited the Crawford family for the holidays rather than traveling home to Michigan, authorities said.

On Oct. 26, Brantley was with the roommates in their McDaniel Street apartment, and the three consumed alcohol, according to police reports. The following day, Crawford reported to police that Brantley had assaulted her. After the alleged assault, Crawford and Jones weren’t on speaking terms, Jones later told police. But on the night of Oct. 30, Crawford asked her friend to take her on a late-night trip for alcohol, according to Jones. Jones obliged. Back at their off-campus apartment, Crawford and Jones got into a physical fight, court documents state.

That’s when Brantley got involved, he told police. “As a result of the physical altercation, Barron Brantley choked the victim until she was deceased,” an Atlanta Police Department report said. “Afterwards, Jones and Brantley placed Alexis Crawford in a plastic bin and transported her body to Exchange Park in Decatur ... where they placed her body in the woods.” Both Jones and Brantley remain held at the Fulton County Jail without bond, records show.

Alexis Crawford murder case | New developments from motions hearing

By Kaitlyn Ross and Jonathan Raymond
    11 Alive News

Here's what we learned from the court proceedings on Friday

A quest for justice in the killing of a Clark Atlanta student faces yet another delay.

The accused killers in the 2019 death of Alexis Crawford - her roommate and close friend, Jordyn Jones, and Jones' then-boyfriend Barron Brantley - were in court for the first time in roughly two years on Friday.

The halting legal process in the case - interrupted by the pandemic, as so many other cases - will continue along after a judge heard several pre-trial motions but did not yet rule on many of them.

11Alive's Kaitlyn Ross was in court to report on the new developments. She reports that Crawford's family was visibly upset by the hearing, with her sister saying she was too emotional to speak about it.

Here's what we learned from the court proceedings:

    Alexis Crawford murder case update

    • Jordyn Jones and Barron Brantley want separate trials: Attorneys for both Jones and Brantley filed motions to sever the case, meaning there would be two different trials for the same crime. The judge did not rule on that motion today.
    • The prosecution wants to use videotaped confessions from the pair: According to investigators, both Jones and Brantley have admitted under questioning at least parts of their roles in the crime. Prosecutors say they gave conflicting stories that point the finger at each other. Defense attorneys have filed motions for a so-called Jackson-Denno hearing - which would determine if their statements to police can be used against them or not. The judge has not ruled on whether they will be granted that hearing.
    • The hearing was paused at midday: Attorneys for both sides said police interviews were too long to get through in just one sitting. They have not yet set a date for when court will reconvene and the judge can watch those interviews. (This is also why the judge can't yet rule on the motions for a Jackson-Denno hearing, because the statements haven't been reviewed in court.)
    • Jones' family was at the hearing: They were also visibly shaken, with her mom covering her ears with her hands and at one point a deputy brought her box of tissues. They declined to comment after the hearing.
    • 11Alive's camera was denied access to the courtroom: The judge ruled against allowing cameras because evidence was being discussed that may not be allowed into the actual trial and because the defendants were wearing jail clothes, which could potentially taint the opinions of future jurors.
