New details emerge in Khyler Edman’s murder

    By Wink News

A man accused of killing a Port Charlotte teenager that heroically saved his younger sister in September told detectives, the day of the killing, he blacked out after buying drugs, waking up in the hospital with no recollection.

The suspect, Ryan Cole, 27, is accused of fatally stabbing Khyler Edman, 15, while the victim was trying to protect his sister during the home invasion. Cole was formally charged with second-degree murder and burglary at an arraignment Monday morning.

The sister of the victim, who was hiding in her room, told investigators Cole was heard knocking and opened the front door on Sept 26. Moments later, Cole pointed a firearm at her brother, saying, “Put your hands up,” according to the affidavit. Using a knife, the victim tried to defend himself from Cole. However, Khyler Edman was later found with several stab wounds to his torso area.

According to the affidavit, the mother had an interactive surveillance camera. When she saw a Facebook alert about a suspicious person in the area, she checked in on her camera, but neither of her children responded despite them both being at home. After several attempts, Khyler’s sister went into the view of the camera, saying that her bother is dead, with his eyes open, and needs an ambulance. The victim’s mother rushed home from work. She found her teenage son’s body in the living room.

“There’s nothing we’ve been able to identify as to why he chose that house,” said Sheriff Bill Prummell, of Charlotte County Sherriff’s Office.

A detective later interviewed Cole. Before the murder, Cole said he met with a person at Bayfront Hospital where he purchased around $40 worth of heroin and meth, per the affidavit. In the 10 years he has been doing drugs,
Cole said he has never blacked out until that day. His next memory was waking up at a Lee County hospital, with no recollection of the murder he is accused of committing.

Ryan Cole has been indicted for first-degree murder of Khyler Edman

    By Wink News

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell and State Attorney Amira Fox announced Friday that the Charlotte County Grand Jury indicted Ryan Clayton Cole for First-Degree Murder, First-Degree Burglary and Burglary of a Dwelling.

Cole is formally charged with murdering 15-year-old Khyler Edman during the commission of a burglary of a Port Charlotte home on September 26, 2019. Cole is alleged to have stabbed the young teen to death at the time of the crime. Cole is also alleged to have burglarized a second home shortly thereafter and discovered by that homeowner.

Sheriff Bill Prummell stated, “I applaud my deputies and investigators for their tireless work on this very tragic case. I also thank the State’s Attorney’s Office as we continue to work hand in hand in bringing this investigation to a successful conclusion. My heart goes out to the family of this 15-year-old boy.”

Even with Cole off the street and justice continuing to be served, neighbors say say they will never be the same.

“I walk on my back porch at night, and, now, I’m afraid to be outside there by myself,” neighbor Donna Vela said.

Still, Vela has positive memories of Khyler, whose life was taken from him, his family and community members.

”He was a good kid,” Vela said. “He didn’t deserve what happened to him.”

The new charges brought against Cole do bring some solace to Khyler’s family. We spoke to his grandmother, Rebecca English, over the phone.

“We can take a breath that they’re going forward with harsher charges,” English said.

State attorney shared almost exact sentiment for the hope of the family, as Cole now faces First-Degree Murder.

“I hope that today’s indictment and the ensuing prosecution brings some small solace to a family suffering unimaginable pain and heartache,” Fox said during the press conference Friday.

Cole was scheduled to appear before the judge Saturday morning, but after being delayed, it was moved until possibly Sunday, but that could change. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday.

    By WFTX Digital Team

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The man accused of killing a Port Charlotte teenager after breaking into a home was in court today for his arraignment.

Ryan Cole pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and burglary charges.

Cole’s attorney waived a speedy trial on both charges.

In September, investigators say Cole broke into a home and stabbed 15-year-old Khyler Edman to death while his 5-year-old sister hid in the other room.

Cole is due back in court on April 9th.

State to seek death penalty against man accused of killing 15-year-old boy who was protecting 5-year-old sister

    By ABC7 News Staff

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WWSB) - The State Attorney’s Office announced Friday they will be seeking the death penalty against a 27-year-old man who is charged with second degree murder. Ryan Cole is accused of killing a 15-year-old boy in September 2019 in Charlotte County while the teen was protecting his 5-year-old sister.

Around 4pm on Thursday, September 26, deputies were called to Starlite Lane and Ocean Boulevard in Port Charlotte where neighbors said an injured man had been seen walking along the streets.

When deputies arrived, they spotted 27-year-old Ryan Cole. He had been stabbed several times on his hands and side and ran from deputies, crossing the canal towards Conway Boulevard.

Deputies say Cole broke into a home on Conway. The homeowner called 911 and deputies took him into custody after a short foot pursuit. Cole was then taken to be treated at a local hospital for his wounds.

The sheriff’s office says they began canvassing the neighborhood and discovered that Cole had broken into a home on Starlite Lane. Inside, they found 15-year-old Khyler Edman deceased.

Deputies say Cole broke into the home, a violent encounter occurred, and Edman died protecting his younger sibling.

Family ready for suspect in 15-year-old boy's murder to go on trial

By Erica Jackson and Jack Lowenstein
    Wink News

The family of a 15-year-old boy who died protecting his little sister is on a mission for justice.

Khyler Edman was stabbed to death in his Port Charlotte home by a violent intruder in September 2019.

Khyler’s father and grandmother spoke to us for the first time Thursday.

Instead of celebrating Khyler’s 17th birthday with him, his family spent the day mourning the life of a hero.

“I think to myself, ‘Khyler would be driving,” grandmother Mary Summers said. “He would be a junior in high school. He would be probably in ROTC and preparing for his future.”

Khyler died protecting his little sister when investigators say a man burst into their home nearly 18 months ago. His father, Billy Edman, and grandmother have not moved past that day.

“I’m just kind of lost and speechless,” Billy said. “It’s hard living without your kid.”

“It’s been very difficult,” Mary said. “We cry a lot. We miss him so, so much.”

Billy and Mary told us time has not come close to healing their wounds. They miss their hugs with Khyler and miss his laugh.

“He will always be in my heart,” Mary said. “He’s always on my mind, but he’s not physically here.”

Suspect Ryan Cole is in the Charlotte County Jail and charged with Khyler’s murder.

Khyler’s family is ready for the case to go to trial.

The state attorney’s office told us there’s more than 80 witnesses and thousands of pages to sort through, but the case is moving forward.

“They’ve had plenty of time to review their case,” Mary said. “They just need to set a trial date and get on with it so we can have some closure.”

“I just want it over,” Billy said. “I want it to be done.”

Khyler spent his final Christmas donating gifts to local nursing homes. His family plans to do that again this year to carry on his legacy.

“I just want justice for Khyler,” Mary said. “Every day, I talk to Khyler. I think, ‘Khyler, I will get justice for you.’”

Cole homicide case expected to go to trial next year

    By Frank Difiore
    Sun Port Charlotte

PUNTA GORDA — A trial for homicide defendant Ryan Cole may not come until next summer.

Cole, 30, was charged in 2019 with one count each of first-degree murder and first-degree burglary with battery in connection with a home invasion on Starlite Lane.

During that home invasion, Cole is alleged to have killed Khyler Edman while Khyler defended his 5-year-old sister.

    Khyler Edman was 15.

Cole appeared in court over video Thursday for a court hearing.

His defense attorney, public defender Tony Oonk, said that he was about to wrap up taking depositions from law enforcement witnesses in the case and move on to depositions of civilian witnesses.

Oonk estimated 20 hours of deposition testimony had been recorded so far in the case; depositions are expected to last until the end of the year.

The defense also stated that they were in the process of working with a mitigation specialist for testimony.

With that timeline in mind, Oonk estimated the defense would not be ready for trial before next June or July.

Judge Donald Mason ruled to continue the case until a new hearing Dec. 15. However, he added that there would be “serious discussion about what happens” after that date.

The State Attorney’s Office has filed notice that they would seek the death penalty if Cole is convicted on the murder charge.

According to the arrest affidavit in his case, Cole was arrested the same night of Khyler’s death in connection with another burglary.

He allegedly told deputies who arrested him that he was blacked out on heroin and meth, and thus had no memory of stabbing anyone.

Before his death, Khyler Edman attended Charlotte High School; he was honored posthumously at the 2022 graduation ceremony, the class he would have been part of.

Senior class President Alyssa Gilliard spoke about the bravery Khyler demonstrated in protecting his sister.

“Be known for who you love, and be someone like Khyler,” Gilliard said in her speech at the graduation ceremony.
