New details emerge in Khyler Edmans murder

    By Wink News

A man accused of killing a Port Charlotte teenager that heroically saved his younger sister in September told detectives, the day of the killing, he blacked out after buying drugs, waking up in the hospital with no recollection.

The suspect, Ryan Cole, 27, is accused of fatally stabbing Khyler Edman, 15, while the victim was trying to protect his sister during the home invasion. Cole was formally charged with second-degree murder and burglary at an arraignment Monday morning.

The sister of the victim, who was hiding in her room, told investigators Cole was heard knocking and opened the front door on Sept 26. Moments later, Cole pointed a firearm at her brother, saying, Put your hands up, according to the affidavit. Using a knife, the victim tried to defend himself from Cole. However, Khyler Edman was later found with several stab wounds to his torso area.

According to the affidavit, the mother had an interactive surveillance camera. When she saw a Facebook alert about a suspicious person in the area, she checked in on her camera, but neither of her children responded despite them both being at home. After several attempts, Khylers sister went into the view of the camera, saying that her bother is dead, with his eyes open, and needs an ambulance. The victims mother rushed home from work. She found her teenage sons body in the living room.

Theres nothing weve been able to identify as to why he chose that house, said Sheriff Bill Prummell, of Charlotte County Sherriffs Office.

A detective later interviewed Cole. Before the murder, Cole said he met with a person at Bayfront Hospital where he purchased around $40 worth of heroin and meth, per the affidavit. In the 10 years he has been doing drugs,
Cole said he has never blacked out until that day. His next memory was waking up at a Lee County hospital, with no recollection of the murder he is accused of committing.

Ryan Cole has been indicted for first-degree murder of Khyler Edman

    By Wink News

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell and State Attorney Amira Fox announced Friday that the Charlotte County Grand Jury indicted Ryan Clayton Cole for First-Degree Murder, First-Degree Burglary and Burglary of a Dwelling.

Cole is formally charged with murdering 15-year-old Khyler Edman during the commission of a burglary of a Port Charlotte home on September 26, 2019. Cole is alleged to have stabbed the young teen to death at the time of the crime. Cole is also alleged to have burglarized a second home shortly thereafter and discovered by that homeowner.

Sheriff Bill Prummell stated, I applaud my deputies and investigators for their tireless work on this very tragic case. I also thank the States Attorneys Office as we continue to work hand in hand in bringing this investigation to a successful conclusion. My heart goes out to the family of this 15-year-old boy.

Even with Cole off the street and justice continuing to be served, neighbors say say they will never be the same.

I walk on my back porch at night, and, now, Im afraid to be outside there by myself, neighbor Donna Vela said.

Still, Vela has positive memories of Khyler, whose life was taken from him, his family and community members.

He was a good kid, Vela said. He didnt deserve what happened to him.

The new charges brought against Cole do bring some solace to Khylers family. We spoke to his grandmother, Rebecca English, over the phone.

We can take a breath that theyre going forward with harsher charges, English said.

State attorney shared almost exact sentiment for the hope of the family, as Cole now faces First-Degree Murder.

I hope that todays indictment and the ensuing prosecution brings some small solace to a family suffering unimaginable pain and heartache, Fox said during the press conference Friday.

Cole was scheduled to appear before the judge Saturday morning, but after being delayed, it was moved until possibly Sunday, but that could change. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday.

State to seek death penalty against man accused of killing 15-year-old boy who was protecting 5-year-old sister

    By ABC7 News Staff

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WWSB) - The State Attorneys Office announced Friday they will be seeking the death penalty against a 27-year-old man who is charged with second degree murder. Ryan Cole is accused of killing a 15-year-old boy in September 2019 in Charlotte County while the teen was protecting his 5-year-old sister.

Around 4pm on Thursday, September 26, deputies were called to Starlite Lane and Ocean Boulevard in Port Charlotte where neighbors said an injured man had been seen walking along the streets.

When deputies arrived, they spotted 27-year-old Ryan Cole. He had been stabbed several times on his hands and side and ran from deputies, crossing the canal towards Conway Boulevard.

Deputies say Cole broke into a home on Conway. The homeowner called 911 and deputies took him into custody after a short foot pursuit. Cole was then taken to be treated at a local hospital for his wounds.

The sheriffs office says they began canvassing the neighborhood and discovered that Cole had broken into a home on Starlite Lane. Inside, they found 15-year-old Khyler Edman deceased.

Deputies say Cole broke into the home, a violent encounter occurred, and Edman died protecting his younger sibling.
