Death Penalty Off the Table for Paul Perez in 1992/ 2001 CA Murders

California man arrested in decades-old killings of his 5 infants

A California father suspected in the decades-old killings of five of his infants has been arrested, authorities said Monday.

Paul Perez, 57, was arrested at a state prison in Delano, days before he was expected to be released on unrelated charges. He is suspected in the deaths of the children born between 1992 and 2001.

The case reflects an "unspeakable evil," Yolo County Sheriff Tom Lopez said.

"I cannot think of a case more disturbing than this one," he said. "There can be no victim more vulnerable and innocent than an infant and unfortunately this case involves five of them."

Perez’s arrest stems from a 2007 cold case in which the decomposed remains of a child that were found in a sealed, submerged box in a waterway near Woodland – about 80 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Using an expanded DNA database, investigators in October identified the remains as 3-month-old Nikko Lee Perez, who they determined was born in Fresno in 1996 and had four siblings, Sacramento’s Fox 40 reported.

Investigators also determined that Nikko’s sibling Kato Allen Perez, born in Merced in 1992, is also dead, according to the station. Three other siblings are believed to be dead and their remains have not been found, the sheriff’s office said.

District Attorney Jeff Reisig said Perez is eligible for the death penalty, but he has not yet decided whether to pursue it.

"The investigation in this case uncovered a deeply disturbing and chilling case of infanticide," Reisig said.

It is unclear whether Perez has other children or family members, or whether all the babies have the same mother. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.

California man accused of killing 5 kids pleads not guilty

    AP

A man accused of killing five of his infant children decades ago pleaded not guilty to the charges Tuesday.

Paul Allen Perez, 57, a convicted sex offender with a 20-year criminal history, was charged in the deaths of the children born between 1992 and 2001, authorities announced Monday, the same day he was to be released from a state prison in Delano on unrelated charges.

Perez was charged with five counts of premeditated murder with special circumstances of lying in wait, torture and multiple victims. He also faces charges of assault on a child under 8 and criminal enhancements for his prior convictions.

Perez did not talk at the hearing in Yolo County Court other than to enter his pleas.

“There’s so much unknown about this case right now,” Perez’s public defender, Tracie Olson, told the Davis Enterprise after the hearing, noting that her office has not yet received police reports.

District Attorney Jeff Reisig said Perez is eligible for the death penalty but he has not decided whether to pursue it.

The homicide investigation began in 2007 after a fisherman found the badly decomposed remains of a 3-month-old boy recently identified as Nikko Lee Perez in an irrigation sough near Woodland, California, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco.

The charges involve Nikko, who was born in 1996 and four others: Kato Allen Perez, born in 1992, Mika Alena Perez, born in 1995, another Nikko Lee Perez, born in 1997, and Kato Krow Perez, born in 2001. Three of the bodies have not been recovered.

A preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 10.

California man charged with killing five of his infant children over 30 years ago

    CNN

(CNN)- A California man has been charged in the serial homicides of five of his infant children.

Paul Allen Perez, 57, was arrested in connection with a 2007 cold case involving the death of a child, according to the Yolo County Sheriff's Department. He's been charged with five counts of felony murder.

According to the sheriff's department and coroner, a deceased infant was discovered by a fisherman on March 29, 2007 in a waterway just east of the city of Woodland. The infant was found in a sealed, weighted container.
"In my 40 years in law enforcement, I cannot think of a case more disturbing than this one," said Yolo County Sheriff Tom Lopez.

The case remained cold until October of 2019 when DNA comparison technology identified the infant as Nikko Lee Perez, born on November 8, 1996, according to the sheriff's department.

"Sadly, we learned that Nikko was not an only child," said Lopez. "We also tragically learned that four of his siblings suffered his same fate."

Investigators have identified the four additional infant victims, all of whom were less than 6 months old when they died: Kato Allen Perez, was born in 1992; Mika Alena Perez, born in 1995; Nikko Lee Perez, born in 1997; and Kato Krow Perez, born in 2001. All are believed to have been murdered as infants and the remains of three have not yet located, according the Lopez.

At the time of his arrest, Perez was serving time in Kern Valley State Prison for auto theft and felony evading a police officer, according to Wendy Wilcox of the Yolo County District Attorney's Office. He was due to be released Monday.

    DNA break through

The break in the case began in 2018 when the Yolo County District Attorney's Office formed a cold case task force, said Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig.

"The science and power of DNA has shown that monsters and killers cannot hide forever any longer," said Reisig.

Perez was arraigned Tuesday. He is being held in Yolo County jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, according to the court's website.

Perez's public defender, Tracie Olson, told CNN in a statement there are a lot of unknowns and unanswered questions in the case.

"Thus far, it appears the DNA evidence has only been successful in identifying Paul Perez as the biological father of one child. Nothing more. We are keenly interested in the role the mother played in this case, as well as the actual evidence linking Mr. Perez to the alleged crimes," Olson said.

If convicted, Perez could face the death penalty or life in prison, according to the Yolo County DA.

Trial postponed for suspect in multiple infant murders

Yolo County DA’s Office will not be seeking the death penalty

    By Jordan Silva-Benham
    Daily Democrat

Paul Allen Perez, who is accused of killing five infants, appeared for his trial setting conference Tuesday, but the conference was pushed back another six weeks.

The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that it would not be seeking the death penalty against Perez.

The trial setting conference was postponed for six weeks due in part to the fact that the primary investigator in Perez’s case abruptly retired.

Perez is suspected of killing five of his own infant children between 1992 and 2001 — including Nikko Lee Perez whose body was discovered by a fisherman at Conway Slough just east of Woodland in March 2007. Nikko’s case went cold until a DNA comparison identified him in 2019.

Investigators found that Nikko — who was born in Fresno in 1996 — had multiple siblings. One sibling who was born in Merced in 1992, Kato Allen Perez, was known to have died. Three other children — Mike Alena Perez, born in Merced in 1995; Nikko Lee

Perez, born in Fresno in 1997; and Kato Krow Perez, born in Fresno in 2001 — have not been located but are believed to be dead.

At the press conference announcing the arrest, Yolo County Sheriff Tom Lopez noted that the kids had similar names, calling it “unusual” and “suspicious.”

Perez is facing five murder charges with enhancements for torture and for lying in wait, and four counts of assault of a child under 8 years old that is likely to kill the child. He is also facing enhancements for multiple murders, being a habitual criminal and for having a prior conviction.

Perez is due for a trial setting conference on July 12.
