Susan Mauldin, 65, had been missing since Oct. 23

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Remains that were recovered from a Georgia landfill have been identified as those of a missing Fleming Island woman, and a contractor she once hired has been charged with her murder, investigators revealed Saturday.

Sources first confirmed to News4Jax on Friday that the remains of of Susan Maudlin, 65, were found during a search of the Chesser Island Landfill in Georgia.

“The search was conducted over a 10 day period where approximately 7,300 tons of waste was processed. Human remains were discovered on the ninth day of the search,” said Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels. “As a result, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations assisted in the identification of the remains where it was determined to be that of Susan Mauldin.”

Daniels said an arrest warrant was then signed for Binderim on charges of murder and tampering with evidence. He’s scheduled for arraignment next week.

Binderim, who was originally called a person of interest in the case, has been in the Duval County jail on a forgery charge that’s unrelated to the woman’s disappearance. He was a contractor who was hired by Mauldin.

According to Rachel Rojas, the FBI Jacksonville Special Agent in charge, 213 personnel members were called throughout the week to assist. Each day, there were 70 to 90 personnel members on site, which included 40 people searching.

On the ninth day, investigators found what appeared to be a portion of a skull. The following day, more remains were found, and dental records confirmed the remains belonged to Mauldin.

“We know how difficult this news is to Ms. Mauldin’s friends and neighbors. We are also relieved and thankful that we have some answers that we can provide to them today," Rojas said.

    ‘A needle in a haystack’

Daniels on Saturday said as part of the investigation, the Rosemary Hill Waste Management transfer facility in Clay County was a place of interest for detectives. He said investigators learned Rosemary Hill is a transport facility that moves waste to the Chesser Island Landfill, leading to the relentless search in Georgia.

The Chesser Island Road Landfill is the same landfill the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office searched for the body of Joleen Cummings in 2018 without success. The landfill was also searched after 16-year-old Iyana Sawyer vanished in 2018. An indictment later determined Sawyer was shot by her uncle.

It’s also where Clay County Sheriff’s Office detectives found the body of 7-year-old Somer Thompson in 2009.

Rojas said it’s the first successful recovery of human remains processed in a landfill by the Jacksonville FBI since Somer’s body was found.

The FBI on Friday announced the extensive search “yielded several items of interest in the investigation.” An FBI spokesperson said those items are now undergoing testing.

State Attorney Melissa Nelson said that it has been an exhaustive investigation and that no stone was left unturned. Nelson said investigators do not plan to make any additional arrests.

“This is like searching for a needle in a haystack,” Nelson said. “They did this for one reason: A relentless search for truth.”

Evidence: What investigators found to charge Corey Binderim with Clay County woman’s murder

    By Alicia Tarancon
    CBS 47/ FOX 30

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — On Wednesday, Corey Binderim, the man charged with the murder of a Clay County woman, made his first appearance in Clay County.

Binderim walked up to the podium with his hands shackled.

He was the last to be called by Judge Timothy Collins, who read him his charges.

“Alright Mr. Binderim, you’re charged with one count of murder and tampering with evidence. Judge Lester has already determined that there is probable cause,” Collins said.

Action News Jax received an affidavit for his arrest, detailing the evidence in the case.

According to the report in October Binderim went to a Fleming Island Home Depot to purchase two 60 pound bags of concrete and large heavy-duty construction bags.

Cellphone records show he called Susan Mauldin twice and then her phone was turned off.

At one point, video surveillance caught him leaving her home the same day he went to a landfill and dumped 300 pounds.

According to the affidavit, he also visited his storage unit in Eagle Harbor.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said a k-9 found human decomposition odor inside a plastic bin of that same storage facility.

Action News Jax first reported in October when the 65-year-old disappeared from her home in Fleming Island.

Mauldin hired Binderim to do some work for her at her home and when he didn’t complete the job, she asked for her money back.

Binderim was charged with her murder after her remains were found by the FBI in a landfill in January.

He is currently sitting inside the Clay County jail on no bond for the murder charge. His next court date is March 24.

Clay County contractor indicted on first-degree murder charges

    By News4JAX.com Staff

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A grand jury returned an indictment Thursday charging a Clay County contractor with first-degree murder, among other charges, in the 2019 disappearance and death of a client.

Besides the murder count, Corey Binderim is charged with burglary with assault or battery and evidence tampering in the death of Susan Mauldin, a British widow who was reported missing from her Fleming Island home in October 2019.

Binderim, 46, previously pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder in the case.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Binderim is believed to be the last person who saw Mauldin alive. Mauldin’s remains were found at a Folkston, Georgia, landfill three months after her disappearance. It’s unclear how she died.

Binderim was hired at some point to do $12,000 worth of remodeling work on Mauldin’s home. Records released by the State Attorney’s Office show he repeatedly failed to show up for work and finish the job.

State to seek death penalty for Clay County contractor charged in client’s murder

Corey Binderim is accused of killing Susan Mauldin and discarding her remains in a landfill

    News4JAX.com

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The State Attorney’s Office will seek the death penalty for Corey Binderim, a Clay County contractor accused of murdering a client, according to a notice filed in court Tuesday.

Binderim, 46, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and burglary charges in the disappearance and death of Susan Mauldin, a Fleming Island woman whose remains were found in a Georgia landfill.

Mauldin, who authorities say hired Binderim to do some renovation work on her home, was reported missing in October 2019. Investigators suspect Binderim was the last person to have seen Mauldin alive.

Court records show Binderim was hired to complete about $12,000 work of remodeling work on Mauldin’s home prior to her disappearance. Documents released by prosecutors say he repeatedly failed to show up for work and finish the job.

Mauldin’s remains were recovered from a Folkston, Georgia, landfill about three months after her disappearance.

According to court documents, Binderim bought concrete and heavy duty construction bags Oct. 24, 2019, a day before Mauldin was reported missing. He’s also accused of dumping 300 pounds of materials at a landfill the same day.

Binderim was indicted last month on first-degree murder, burglary with assault or battery and evidence tampering charges.

The next court date in the case is set for June 30.

Trial delayed for Clay County contractor charged in client’s murder

The reason: more than 2 dozen motions filed by the defense

    By Frank Powers
    News4JAX.com

The trial of Corey Binderim — a Clay County contractor who is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of a client, Susan Mauldin — was set to begin Thursday with jury selection, but it has been delayed indefinitely.

The reason: more than two dozen motions filed by the defense.

The defense is asking the judge to block the prosecution from seeking the death penalty and to declare Florida’s death penalty unconstitutional.

Binderim’s lawyers have also filed motions regarding jury selection, victim impact evidence, and to bar the prosecution from showing any photos it deems inflammatory.

Binderim, 47, will be back in court on Wednesday for a hearing on some of the motions.

He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and burglary charges in the disappearance and death of Mauldin, a British widow who was reported missing from her Fleming Island home in October 2019.

Investigators suspect Binderim was the last person to have seen Mauldin alive.

Judge denies motion to block state from seeking death penalty if Clay County contractor charged in client’s murder is convicted

Corey Binderim charged with 1st-degree murder in death of Susan Mauldin

    By Frank Powers

    News4JAX.com

A Clay County judge has denied a motion by lawyers representing Corey Binderim — a contractor who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of a client, Susan Mauldin — to block the state from seeking the death penalty if he’s convicted and denied a motion to declare Florida’s death penalty law unconstitutional.

Those motions are almost always filed in death penalty cases, but there was another, unusual motion regarding the death penalty. Binderim’s lawyers wanted to consolidate their challenges to the state’s death penalty law with six other cases, including another one in Clay County — the retrial of Michael Renard Jackson.

Jackson was convicted and sentenced to death in the 2007 rape and murder of veterinary employee Andrea Boyer, but the conviction and death sentence were overturned on appeal.

In the consolidation motion, Binderim’s lawyers argued that death penalty qualifications systematically exclude potential Black jurors and twice the rate of whites.

    That motion was also denied.

Binderim’s trial was set to begin last month but has been delayed indefinitely.

He has pleaded not guilty to first degree murder and burglary charges in the disappearance and death of Mauldin, a British widow who was reported missing from her Fleming Island home in October 2019.
