Augusta man pleads not guilty in slaying of Richmond County sheriff's investigator

    By Sandy Hodson
    Augusta Chronicle

An Augusta facing a death penalty trial in the fatal shooting of a Richmond County sheriff's investigator formerly entered a not-guilty plea Friday.

Alvin T. Hester, 25, was arraigned in a Richmond County Superior Court hearing Friday morning, just over 14 months after he allegedly killed Investigator Cecil Ridley, 51.

The two men crossed paths the night of Nov. 19, 2019, at the Augusta Mart, a Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard convenience store. Ridley, a veteran officer, was on duty working a special detail focused on reducing violent crimes in the city.

Ridley and another officer followed Hester inside the store when Hester allegedly turned and fired on Ridley before running from the store. Hester was allegedly still armed when he fled the store and was shot outside by other officers.

Friday, in response to a question by Judge J. Wade Padgett, newly elected District Attorney Jared Williams said he intends to continue with the capital murder charges against Hester.

Killing an on-the-job law enforcement officer is one ground in Georgia that allows prosecutors to seek a death sentence. If a jury finds Hester guilty of murder, it will have the option of setting punishment at death or life in prison with or without the possibility of parole.

Padgett set a tentative date of April 29 for Hester's next hearing.

Hester remains in jail without bond. He has three prior felony convictions — for shoplifting in July 2013, burglary in May 2017 and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute in October 2017. He was sentenced to probation for the first two convictions. For the drug case he was sentenced to two years in prison followed by five years probation. He was paroled June 20, 2018.
