Protestor Abdulhamid Mir-Balouchzehi executed in Zahedan

Prisoner, Abdulhamid Mir-Balouchzehi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili has announced news of his client’s execution on his Twitter page. Iran Human Rights condemns his execution in the strongest terms.

IHR Director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said: “In addition to the death penalty being a cruel and inhumane punishment, all evidence suggest that Abdulhamid Mir-Balouchzehi was denied the right to a fair trial and the right to a retrial according to Iranian law. Defendants accused of “security” charges are systematically subjected to physical and mental torture to force false confessions, which are used as evidence by the Revolutionary Courts to issue the death penalty behind closed doors. The executions are used as an intimidation tool by the Islamic Republic to prevent protests and dissent; in order to stop these executions, we must intensify the campaign against the death penalty and demand a collective condemnation of such gross injustices.”

Iran Human Rights had previously called on the international community to prioritise human rights violations at any negotiations and talks with officials of the Islamic Republic.

According to IHR, political prisoner, Abdulhamid Mir-Balouchzehi was executed on the morning of Saturday December 26.

His lawyer, Mostafa Nili announced news of his execution on Twitter: “Unfortunately, when I contacted Hamid Mir-Balouchzehi’s family, I found out that his execution has been carried out. I felt ashamed that I was not able to do anything.”

Abdulhamid Mir-Balouchzehi was arrested on November 28, 2015 after his home in Iranshahr was raided by Zahedan security forces and transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention centre in Zahedan for interrogations. His family were also beaten by security forces during his arrest.

He was sentenced to death after being charged with “acting against national security” and “moharebeh (enmity against god) through armed attacks” in court.

Juvenile offender Hassan Rezaei executed on the last day of 2020

Juvenile convict Hassan Rezaei has been executed at Rasht Central Prison. Iran Human Rights condemns his execution in the strongest terms.

Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, IHR director said: “The international community and European states in particular, must respond to this execution appropriately. Tens of other juvenile convicts are currently on death row in Iranian prisons, the only way to save them from the death penalty is to change the law through sustained international pressure. That child offenders are still being executed in 2020, is not only shameful for the Islamic Republic of Iran but also for the international community.”

In 2020, Iran was the only country to carry out the death penalty on juvenile offenders. According to data collected by IHR and international human rights organisations, the Islamic Republic is responsible for more than 70% of all executions of juvenile offenders in the last 30 years.

According to Iran Human Rights, Hassan Rezaei was executed in the early hours of this morning at Rasht Central Prison.

According to his relatives, Hassan was 16 years old when he was arrested and sentenced to death for murder. He had spent the last 12 years on death row.

He had been transferred for execution on two previous occasions, last year when he had managed to buy an extension from his victim’s family and a fortnight ago, when it was delayed.

At the time of writing, Hassan’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Iran has ratified the Convention for the Rights of the Child and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which ban the death penalty for offences committed under 18 years of age. Moreover, Article 91 of the new Islamic Penal Code, passed in 2013, grants judges the power to not issue death sentences to children who did not know and comprehend the nature of the crime or its sanctity. However, Iran remains the world's top executioner of juvenile offenders.

According to data gathered by Iran Human Rights, at least 63 juveniles have been executed by the Islamic Republic of Iran since 2010, and more than 70% of all child executions in the last 30 years have been carried out in Iran.

Given the security state and repression of civil society activists and the limited contact with prisoners, it is likely that the number of juvenile executions is much higher than recorded.

Three Sunni men executed in Mashhad on New Year’s Eve

Three Sunni prisoners, Hamid Rastbala, Kabir Saadat-Jahani and Mohammad Ali Arayesh, were executed at Mashhad Central Prison without the right to a last visit with their families. The three men were charged with “baghy (armed rebellion) through membership in the Salafi Al-Forghan Party and membership in the National Solidarity Front of Sunnis in Iran.”

Condemning the executions, Iran Human Rights warns of the imminent execution of a large number of minority prisoners in the upcoming days.

According to IHR, on the morning of Thursday December 31, 2020, three Sunni prisoners were executed at Mashhad Central Prison. Their identities have been established as Hamid Rastbala, Kabir Saadat-Jahani and Mohammad Ali Arayesh.

An informed source told IHR that the three men did not have access to their lawyers of choice throughout their trial process. They were sentenced to death by Branch One of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court on charges of “baghy (armed rebellion) through membership in the Salafi Al-Forghan Party and membership in the National Solidarity Front of Sunnis in Iran.”

Hrana News Agency which first broke the news, reported that in 2015, Hamid Rastbala, Kabir Saadat-Jahani and Mohammad Ali Arayesh were arrested by security forces along with Farhad Shakeri, Issa Eid-Mohammadi, Hakim Azim-Gargij, Taj Mohammad Khormali, Abdolrahman Gargij and Hossein Varasteh-Soleimani, and detained in the Ministry of Intelligence’s solitary confinement cells for 10-12 months. They had been in Mashhad Central Prison for the last four years.

Hrana also quoted the informed source as saying: “Hassan Heidari, the first investigator in their case, would personally threaten and whip them. Farhad Shakeri went on a hunger strike for four months and 17 days to protest being kept in limbo for so long, but the authorities ignored his demands and would just put him on a drip; they would keep him alive like that until they sentenced him to death.”

At the time of writing, the three men’s executions have not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

On January 2, two other Sunni prisoners were transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions in Zahedan Central Prison. Over the last fortnight, executions have intensified in the minority populated regions in the South and West of Iran. All the prisoners sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Courts have been denied their right to due process and a fair trial.

Iran Human Rights had previously warned that based on previous years, there would be a rise in executions over the Christmas and New Year period when most international organisations and civil society are closed for the holidays.
