Terry Blankenship Sentenced to Life with the Chance of Parole in 2020 OH Slaying of Officer Kaia Grant

Suspect in Springdale officer's murder held without bond, prosecutor seeking death penalty

    MSN News

The suspect in a crash that killed Springdale Police officer Kaia Grant will be held without bond, pending a possible death penalty trial.

Terry Blankenship was arraigned Tuesday morning on a charge of aggravated murder. The hearing comes one month after the fatal crash, because Blankenship has been hospitalized.

The Hamilton County prosecutor’s office revealed in court that police in our area believed Blankenship posed a danger days before the deadly run-in.

The believe he burst into an ex’s house in Clinton County and pistol whipped her new boyfriend.

“Prior to leaving fleeing the residence he commented that he would have the police shoot him and dispatchers put out a bulletin that he was armed and threatening suicide by cop,” said Dave Wood with the Hamilton County prosecutor’s office.

Blankenship limped into court this morning, carrying fresh scars on his head.

Prosecutors say a single shot was fired after the crash, and it was not fired by police. A .45 caliber handgun was found in Blankenship’s truck.

Investigators think Blankenship intentionally rammed his truck into Grant.

The prosecutor asked for no bond in this case, a rare request, which was granted by Judge Brad Greenberg. It means Blankenship will be held without the possibility of release before his trial.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters plans to pursue the death penalty at trial.

Man Will Face Possible Death Penalty In Ohio Police Officer’s Death

An Ohio prosecutor says a grand jury has indicted a man on 10 counts that include an aggravated murder charge that carries a potential death sentence in the killing of a police officer.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announced the charges Wednesday against Larry Blankenship, 42, accused of killing a police officer by crashing into her during a chase.

Blankenship is charged with purposefully killing an officer on duty, which has a death specification with conviction. He also is charged with murder, which could result in a life sentence.

Springdale officer Kaia Grant, 33, was killed March 21 after she was struck while Blankenship was allegedly fleeing police.

Police were trying to arrest Blankenship on a felony warrant from Blanchester, Ohio. When the chase entered the Springdale city limits on Interstate 275, Grant and Sgt. Andrew Davis were trying to deploy stop sticks when Blankenship allegedly crashed into the pair. Davis was treated for injuries and survived.

Deters has said Blankenship survived a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

Blankenship is being held on $2 million bond. Records didn’t indicate whether he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Grant had been with the Springdale force for 8 years. Authorities said she was the 1st police officer to be killed in the line of duty in the northern Cincinnati suburb’s history.

Man accused of murdering Springdale officer held without bond

The man accused of killing a Springdale police officer during a chase will remain held without bond as the death penalty case moves forward. Terry Blankenship was arraigned following his indictment on charges of aggravated murder, aggravated vehicular homicide, felonious assault and other charges.

Elmwood Place Police had tried to pull Blankenship over for a felony burglary warrant out of Blanchester on March 21. Blankenship is accused of breaking into his ex-wife's home and pistol-whipped her new boyfriend. He reportedly told them he was not going to be taken alive and he's not going to jail.

Blankenship refused to stop for Elmwood Place police and led them on a chase on I-75 to I-275. As Officer Kaia Grant put out stop sticks, Blankenship allegedly swerved to intentionally hit her.

In court, Blankenship pleaded not guilty. His attorney asked for a fair bond.

Assistant prosecutor Seth Tieger requested no bond for Blankenship.

"It's pretty clear that if he were to get out he would come back, it would be pretty evident that someone would probably get killed again."

Judge Elizabeth Callen agreed, calling Blankenship a danger to the community.

"Your actions were egregious in these circumstances. You disregarded law enforcement, you disregarded human life. It sounds like this might have been your plan from the beginning and now we've lost a young member of our community."

After the hearing. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters called Blankenship a coward for trying to kill himself. Blankenship shot himself through the chin but survived.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The man accused of killing a local police officer appeared in court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing.

Terry Blankenship, 42, faces several charges, including aggravated murder, for killing Springdale Police Officer Kaia Grant. Blankenship hit Officer Grant with his vehicle in March while she laid down stop sticks during a chase. Police had been chasing Blankenship on I-275.

Mother of Springdale officer killed on I-275 says man 'stole her future and her dreams'

    By Kevin Grasha
    Cincinnati Enquirer

On the day the man who killed her daughter pleaded guilty and was sentenced, Gina Mobley recalled the day her daughter was born.

Oct. 18, 1986, Mobley said, "was the sweetest day."

She called the actions of Terry Blankenship, who last year drove a pickup into Springdale police Officer Kaia Grant's car, "malevolent" and "evil."

Standing at a podium Friday in a Hamilton County courtroom, Mobley said Blankenship "stole (Grant's) future and her dreams."

Common Pleas Judge Jennifer Branch imposed a sentence Friday that had been agreed upon as part of Blankenship's plea – life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.

The courtroom was packed with dozens of police officers, most of them Grant's colleagues.

Springdale police Chief Thomas Wells told Branch that what happened "has altered our lives forever."

"There is just nothing that can change what occurred and the effect it has had on us, as people," Wells said.

Blankenship, 43, pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated murder. He had faced the death penalty, but prosecutors agreed not to seek a death sentence in exchange for the guilty plea.

The crash happened the evening of March 21, 2020. An Elmwood Place police officer was pursuing Blankenship on Interstate 275 when the crash happened in Springdale's city limits.

Grant, a seven-year veteran of the department, was likely preparing to throw a tire-deflation device on the highway, officials have said. Springdale police Sgt. Andrew Davis was assisting her.

At about 8:15 p.m., officials said Blankenship drove his pickup directly toward the officers. He plowed into their patrol cars, causing Grant’s body to go airborne, cross the highway barrier and land on the opposite side of the highway, officials have said.

Grant was taken by helicopter to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. She was 33 years old. Davis "was nearly killed," Wells said.

Afterward, Blankenship's pickup was stopped at the side of the highway. One of his attorneys, Tim McKenna, said Friday that Blankenship tried to commit suicide by shooting himself from under the chin. He suffered extensive facial injuries and woke up in a hospital, McKenna said, on a ventilator with a tube in his throat.

Blankenship had been wanted by Blanchester police since two days earlier, when officials say he broke into his estranged wife's trailer and threatened her boyfriend at gunpoint.

After a struggle over the gun, police said Blankenship pistol-whipped the man before fleeing.

According to Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters, in text messages to his estranged wife and in conversations with his mother, Blankenship made statements indicating "police would have to kill him (because) he was not willing to go back to jail."

In court Friday, Branch asked Blankenship if he wanted to make a statement. He responded, simply, "No, ma'am."
