Dustin Melton Davison - Oklahoma Death Row

    Kreedin Brooks, 2

Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty Against Bethany Man Accused In Toddler's Death

BETHANY, Oklahoma - Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against a man accused of killing a 2-year-old child.

Dustin Davison was arrested back on May 18 after he called 911 saying the child was unresponsive.

News 9 talked with child's uncle Thursday afternoon by phone.

Mike Sepe says he thinks Dustin Davison should rot in prison for the rest of his life for what he's accused of doing to this little boy. But Sepe says the rest of the family is in favor of the death penalty.

Court papers reveal Dustin Davison had been babysitting 2-year-old Kreedin Brooks while the son’s mother, who was his girlfriend at the time, was away from their apartment.

“He was an innocent little child you know,” said Sepe during an on camera interview back on July 24. “I mean innocent little child, at two years what could you do? There's no way any child any child would deserve something like that.”

Court papers state Kreedin was covered in bruises and had blood coming from his nose and mouth. He also suffered blunt force trauma to his head.

When paramedics arrived at the Bryan Hill apartment complex near NW 36th and Meridian back on May 18, they hoped they could save the child. But they could not.

Davison's call to 911 ended up implicating him in the child's death.

According to court papers, Davidson originally told Bethany police officers that he was in the shower for 15 minutes prior to finding the victim lying unresponsive and unconscious on the living room floor.

Davison stated he attempted to administer CPR to the victim. He explained how the victim was in his terrible two’s and liked to climb things. When asked, Davison stated he did not see the incident occur.

While at the police department, Davison told investigators the same story as he told responding officers, however, he added the victim fell and hit his head on the coffee table. Once confronted with the evidence that did not match his recollection of the events of the incident, Davison admitted to playing rough with the victim.

He admitted to getting into a pillow fight with the child and hitting him with a pillow, which caused the child to fall off the couch and slam his head into the coffee table.

Davison stated the victim hit the table very hard.

According to medical personnel at the hospital, the victim sustained a fractured skull and had swelling and bleeding of the brain.

The victim also had other previous injuries to the head due to older bruising and the injuries were consistent with abuse. Recent bruising also led investigators to believe the victim sustained multiple hits to the head.

Davison reportedly told investigators the victim caused the recent bruises and head trauma by playing slip and slide in the bathroom tub and claimed the bruises were self - inflicted.

Court papers state police also found marijuana in the living room on the coffee table.

News 9 obtained an excerpt of the 911 call Davison made back on May 18.

    Davison is heard saying:

“I was in the shower and next thing I know I come out and there's blood on the left side of his head - and also his forehead is severely bruised. and I think the internal bleeding from the skull went into the lungs…I tried patting his back as many times as I could to get all of the blood out but I'm just holding him right now hoping that he will make it through this.”

In the bill of particulars filed Wednesday, prosecutors stated they are seeking the death penalty because the murder was especially heinous and they feel Davison would be a threat to society.

Now, Kreedin's uncle Mike just waits for Davison's day in court. A court date is yet to be set.

“Any grown person that abuses a child isn't worth nothing in my eyes,” said Sepe.

Sepe’s mission now is to help raise money and awareness for child abuse victims.

Graphic Testimony In Trial Of Bethany Man Accused In Toddler's Death

    BY JENNIFER PIERCE
    news9.com KWTV

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma County jurors heard graphic testimony on Thursday during the trial of a Bethany man accused of killing a toddler.

Expert witnesses described the severe injuries Kreedin Brooks, 2, suffered.

The victim’s mother had her head down and even walked out of the courtroom as prosecutors showed the jury photos of the toddler’s extensive injuries.

The family of the victim wants everyone to remember him as a smiling, active two-year-old boy.

On May 18, 2015, the boy was left in the care of his mother’s then boyfriend Dustin Davison.

The jury watched Davison’s recorded interview with Bethany police. He told the detective he took a shower and came out to find the toddler on the floor bleeding from his mouth and nose, he attempted CPR and then called 911.

911 call: “I was in the shower and next thing I know, I come out and there’s blood on the left side of his head...and also his forehead is severely bruised and I think the internal bleeding from the skull went into his lungs.”

The emergency room doctor told the court the boy was unresponsive and died shortly after arriving to the ER.

The medical examiner also testified he found a skull fracture, brain swelling and more than 50 injuries and bruises on the victim’s small body and head.

Davison gave investigators conflicting stories about how the victim’s injuries happened, but the ME ultimately ruled the death a homicide and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

In 2015, the victim’s uncle told News 9, he would like to see Davison spend life in prison.

“Any grown person that abuses a child,” said Mike Sepe, victim’s uncle. “Isn’t worth nothing in my eyes.”

Other family members are in favor of the death penalty. The first phase of the trial will wrap up Friday.

New Evidence In Trial Of Bethany Man Accused In Toddler's Death

    By Jennifer Pierce
    news9.com KWTV

OKLAHOMA CITY - Prosecutors presented new evidence Friday in the murder trial of a Bethany man.

Dustin Davison, 25, faces the death penalty for the alleged killing of his girlfriend’s two-year-old boy.

Jurors watched a nearly two-hour jail interview between a Bethany detective and Davison. They listened as Davison changed his story several times

The day Kreedin Brooks, 2, died, Davison told investigators he took a shower and found the victim unresponsive on the floor of his Bethany apartment. Later that day, Davison said the boy fell and hit his head on a coffee table.

The toddler was in Davison’s care when he died from multiple blunt force trauma.

Throughout the investigation the suspect gave detectives conflicting stories.

In a jail interview, a Bethany detective called the murder suspect a liar and a monster.

Davison first told the detective the victim fell off the apartment balcony and landed on tree roots. Davison then admitted he was in a bad mood and angry after taking his girlfriend, the victim’s mother, to work.

He described how he slammed a door on the toddler, kicked a soccer ball at his face, pulled a chair out from under him and then slammed another door on the victim causing him to fall to his face. He said the final blow was when he slammed the victim to the floor causing the fatal skull fracture.

Davison said none of it was intentional and it was an accident.

Prosecutors said Davison is expected to take the stand at some point during the trial.

Jurors choose death penalty for Bethany man who fatally beat his ex-girlfriend’s 2-year-old son

    By Kyle Schwab
    NewsOK.com

Jurors Thursday chose death as punishment for a remorseless Bethany man who fatally beat his ex-girlfriend's 2-year-old son while babysitting in 2015.

The Oklahoma County jurors reached their decision in only one hour.

Dustin Melvin Davison, 25, showed no reaction as District Judge Cindy Truong announced the verdict. Davison hung his head as deputies handcuffed him and escorted him from the courtroom.

Afterward, relatives of the victim, Kreedin Paul Brooks, cried and embraced outside the courtroom. With tears in her eyes, the child's mother, Jennifer Young, also gave long hugs to the prosecutors.

"It's just a tragic, tragic case. This child suffered an indescribably painful and horrific death. And justice was done today," Assistant District Attorney Gayland Gieger told The Oklahoman.

Gieger said Davison has shown no remorse.

"There's no doubt in my mind that the jury made note of that and that factored into their decision," the prosecutor said.

Jurors also learned that Davison, while in jail awaiting trial, had the victim's name and the word "autopsy" tattooed on his right arm.

On Monday, the jury found Davison guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal beating. On Thursday, jurors chose the death sentence on grounds that the murder was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel, and that Davison would be a continuing threat to society.

“On May 18, 2015, Dustin Davison made the choice to brutally beat a 2-year-old child to death,” Assistant District Attorney Kelly Collins told the jury during closing arguments Thursday.

Collins then said she'll never know how many times Davison punched or beat the boy that day.

"But what we do know is the extent of Kreedin Brooks' injuries," the prosecutor said.

The child had a skull fracture, brain bleeding, a broken jawbone and 49 bruises below the neck.

After his arrest, Davison gave a dozen different accounts to investigators of how the child became injured in his care. Jurors were shown those recorded interrogations during the trial.

In one story, he said the boy was injured during a pillow fight. In another, he said the child fell off a second-story balcony while he was sleeping. At one point, Davison even confesses to slamming the child's head to the floor.

Davison also testified during the trial, telling a 13th story about what happened. He testified a friend he sold drugs to beat the boy to death inside a Bethany apartment he shared with his ex-girlfriend. He claimed the friend killed the boy while he was high on meth in the bathroom.

There was no evidence of meth, a drug transaction or the friend at the apartment that day, according to prosecutors.

Even though the couple had broken up, Davison agreed to babysit Kreedin while Young was at work. Prosecutors alleged Davison may have beaten the child because he was angry Young was dating again.

During closing arguments Thursday, defense attorney Melanie Freeman-Johnson told the jury that Davison's actions that day were "out of the blue." She also said Davison wasn't in his right mind.

“No one saw anything like this coming," Freeman-Johnson said. “It's not who he is. There was something going on with him. Something was infecting him.”

The defense attorney urged the jury not to choose the death penalty, calling the punishment "inappropriate" for the case.

    By KFOR News

OKLAHOMA CITY – A 25-year-old Oklahoma man convicted in the beating death of his ex-girlfriend’s 2-year-old son has been sentenced to death.

Dustin Melvin Davison was convicted of first-degree murder last month in the May 18, 2015, beating death of Kreedin Paul Brooks.

An Oklahoma County jury recommended Davison receive the death penalty, and a judge Thursday ordered that Davison be put to death. Davison’s death sentence is subject to automatic appeal.

The child suffered a skull fracture, brain bleeding, a broken jawbone and nearly 50 bruises below the neck. Jurors found that the child’s death was especially heinous, atrocious or cruel and that Davison would be a continuing threat to society.
