Cumberland County man faces death penalty in '08 case

Cumberland County prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a man accused of killing Rapheal Svantes Thomas in 2008.

Calvin Wayne Locklear of the 3100 block of Cumberland Road faces a first-degree murder charge, and an unrelated attempted first-degree murder charge.

The 20-year-old Locklear, who goes by the nickname "50-Cal," is accused of killing Thomas, whose body was found Oct. 24, 2008, near Whiteville.

Locklear was arrested in January 2009 after being listed on Fayetteville police's most wanted list for three months.

He also is charged with trying to kill Rodriguez Harris by shooting him in the head on Oct. 4, 2008.

Harris, 21, was found lying in the middle of Sequoia Drive, police said.

Police said Locklear took Harris' 1998 Buick at the time of the shooting.

Police also charged him with stealing a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a gold necklace and a cell phone. The items were valued at $2,450
