Medina County prosecutor seeks death penalty for man accused of killing wife, mother-in-law

MEDINA, Ohio — Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for a man accused of killing his wife and mother-in-law with his 17-year-old son inside the house.

A Medina County grand jury on Tuesday indicted Robert Dick, 52, on charges of aggravated murder, three counts of kidnapping and lesser offenses. He will be arraigned on Monday in Medina County Common Pleas Court.

Dick is being held in the Medina County Jail on $5 million bond. He is accused of killing Pamela Dick, 46, and her mother, Lillian Cox, 84.

Medina County Prosecutor Forrest Thompson’s Office is pursuing the death penalty because Robert Dick killed or attempted to kill more than one person, according to court records.

Investigators have not released a motive for the slayings.

The shooting happened about 4:30 p.m. Thursday at their home on Lafayette Road near Baxter Street. Dick’s 17-year-old son called 911 and reported that his father shot his stepmother.

The teen told dispatchers that he went downstairs and found Robert Dick sitting in a chair weeping. Robert Dick, a welder by trade, told his son he had shot the boy’s stepmother and that he was going to kill his grandmother.

Robert Dick got out of the chair, shot Cox and chased his son out of the house. The teen grabbed his phone, ran and called 911 while hiding.

Robert Dick became the subject of a seven-hour manhunt that took police to neighboring Wayne County.

Robert Dick ditched his car near a Dollar General in West Salem and a Good Samaritan, with two children inside his car, offered to give him a ride. Robert Dick got in the man’s car threatened him with a gun, prosecutors said.

The man refused to give him a ride, and reported the incident to police.

Dick got out of the car and ran into a wooded area off Rainbow Highway in West Salem, police said. A camper reported seeing Robert Dick hiding in the woods and police arrested him. He had a gun with him during the arrest, police said.

Robert Dick has two prior domestic violence convictions against a former girlfriend, once in 2005 and once in 2015. In both cases, he attacked the woman and threatened to kill her in front of his son, according to police reports.

Man pleads not guilty in fatal shootings of wife, her mother

A man accused of fatally shooting his wife and mother-in-law in their northeastern Ohio home earlier this month has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty for Robert Dick, 52, of Medina, who is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of murder and three counts of kidnapping. He entered his plea Monday during a court hearing, and his trial was set for Feb. 1.

The counts stem from the Aug. 6 slayings of Pamela Dick, 47, and Lillian Cox, 84. Prosecutors have said Robert Dick shot both women in the head with a .38-caliber handgun and then fled the home in Medina, but they have not said what prompted the shootings.

He was captured several hours later after authorities launched a massive search that included more than 100 officers from several law enforcement agencies. He was found in a wooded area in West Salem.

Authorities have said that after he fled the home, Dick abandoned his pickup truck for some reason and was soon picked up by a good Samaritan who had two children in their vehicle. Authorities said Dick soon pulled his handgun on the driver, who pulled into a store parking lot.

All three were allowed to leave the vehicle unharmed. The three counts of kidnapping stem from this incident, authorities said.

Medina man accused of killing wife and mother-in-law pleads not guilty again in court

    Cleveland 19 News

MEDINA, Ohio (WOIO) - Robert Dick is accused of murdering his wife and his mother-in-law last month inside their Medina home.

Dick appeared in court on Tuesday, still pleading not guilty. His attorneys tell 19 News, once they do their research they’ll be able to prove why.

Both sides wanted the judge to rule on a pair of issues on Tuesday.

The defense asked for experts: they want to bring in consultants to do their own investigation.

The prosecution asked for Dick’s DNA, hoping to link him to the crimes.

    All requests were granted.

Back in August of 2019, Dick led police on a manhunt after police found his wife and mother-in-law dead in their home.

The chase spanned several cities and caused some neighborhoods to be put on high alert.

Police say his 17-year-old son witnessed what happened, and ran out of the house to get help.

Dick is locked up on a $5 million bond.

The trial isn’t scheduled to start until February.

The defense expects it to be much later because of the COVID restrictions, and the importance of the case.

If convicted, Dick could face the death penalty.

MEDINA COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - A Medina County man has pleaded guilty to murdering his wife and mother-in-law last August.

Robert Dick was convicted of two counts of murder, two counts of aggravated murder and three counts of kidnapping.

By pleading guilty, Dick avoided the death penalty.

On Aug. 6, 2020, Dick shot and killed his wife, Pamela, and his mother-in-law, Lillian Cox, 84, inside their home in the 600 block of Lafayette Road in Medina.

Dick’s 17-year-old son witnessed the murders, ran out of the house and called 911.

After the shootings, Dick fled in his Chevy truck to West Salem in Wayne County where authorities said he abandoned his truck and was then offered a ride by a Good Samaritan.

After Dick got into the Good Samaritan’s car, he held the dad and his two children at gunpoint and ordered him to drive.

The dad refused and Dick jumped out and ran into a nearby wooded area near Buckeye Street.

He was taken into custody shortly afterwards by Wayne County Sheriff deputies.

Medina County Court of Common Pleas Judge Christopher Collier will sentence Dick on Aug. 6.
