Quake Lewellyn Sentenced to LWOP in 2020 AR Slaying of 25-Year-Old Sydney Sutherland

Police: Sydney Sutherland was abducted, raped; Arkansas man faces capital murder charge

    KATV News

Arkansas State Police special agent Mike McNeill said during a probable cause hearing Monday in Jackson County court that Lewellyn encountered Sutherland on County Road 41. McNeill testified that Lewellyn turned his truck around and forced Sutherland into the back of the vehicle. McNeill said Lewellyn drove about three miles to a farm where he raped Sutherland, killed her and buried the body.

A group of around 30 people close to Sutherland were in the courtroom during the hearing. A few family members cried as they and Lewellyn waited for the judge to come into the courtroom. They cried again when McNeill described his interview with Lewellyn.

Lewellyn appeared in court wearing an orange jumpsuit and bullet-resistant vest. He did not speak as authorities escorted him into the building.

Lewellyn is being held without bond. A formal arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 1.

Sydney Sutherland's accused killer joined search team after she went missing

    By Paige Cushman
    KATV News

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — A man who faces a capital murder charge in the killing of Sydney Sutherland joined a volunteer group that searched for her after she went missing, volunteers said.

Sutherland, a 25-year-old nurse, disappeared Aug. 19 while she was jogging in the Newport area. Local law enforcement and dozens of volunteers searched for her for days before Quake Lewellyn, 28, admitted to killing her, according to authorities.

Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas said Lewellyn and Sutherland knew each other. Both of their families own many acres of farmland in Jackson County and they graduated from the same high school, three years apart. One member of the community said it wouldn't have been unusual for them to run into each other. Even the prosecuting attorney, Henry Boyce, said on Monday that he knows both families.

Lewellyn reportedly told detectives that he saw Sutherland walking on County Road 41 the day she vanished. Arkansas State Police Special Agent Mike McNeill testified in a court hearing that Lewellyn turned his truck around and abducted Sutherland. McNeill said Lewellyn drove about three miles to a farm where he raped Sutherland, killed her and buried her body.

Days later, he joined a group of volunteers that was searching for her.

Mike Winston has lived in Newport for most of his life. The 56-year-old has worked as a truck driver and is a volunteer for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Services. He said he has daughters who are “beautiful like Sydney was." He said he knew people close to the Sutherlands and he joined the search party because "it's the right thing to do."

"It just hits home and there’s too much of it around here,” Winston said. “Makes you think, 'What’s going on?'"

Winston said there were around 150 people in the search party the first night, and even more the next day. He and his cousin spent over 12 hours on four-wheelers looking for Sutherland, he said.

Lewellyn was listed as a member of a Sydney Sutherland search party page on Facebook. Winston said he saw him there three or four times over the course of the search. A friend of Sutherland's who asked to remain anonymous also confirmed that Lewellyn was at the search party.

Volunteers, family and local law enforcement used search dogs, helicopters and horses to search an area between seven and 10 miles off U.S. 67, Winston said.

Two days after Sutherland went missing, authorities blocked off an area near the north end of the search area. Winston said that he didn't need to ask any questions—he knew what that meant. It wasn't long before the volunteers were told to go home.

"It wasn't good energy," he said. "They didn't have to tell you. You already knew."

Sutherland was found dead near her home.

Lewellyn was being held without bond. A formal arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 1.

A funeral service for Sutherland will be held today.

Wife of Sydney Sutherland's accused killer files for divorce, citing abuse and neglect

    By Paige Cushman
    KATV News

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — The wife of Quake Lewellyn, who is facing capital murder charges for the killing of Sydney Sutherland near Newport last month, has filed for divorce.

Lewellyn's wife of two years said he treated her with abuse, contempt and neglect, according to documents filed in Craighead County Court last week.

The record states they lived together until he was arrested for the killing on Aug. 21. The couple did not have any children together.

On Aug. 19, Lewellyn reportedly saw Sutherland, a 25-year-old nurse who he went to high school with, walking on County Road 41. He told Special Agent Mike McNeill that he turned his truck around and abducted her. He reportedly drove three miles, raped and killed her, and then buried her body.

After joining a search party for Sutherland, he told police he was the one that killed her.

Lewellyn is being held in Randolph County without bond. A formal arraignment is set for Oct. 1.

Medical examiner: Sydney Sutherland died of blunt force trauma

    By Paige Cushman
    KATV News

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — The state medical examiner has found 25-year-old Sydney Sutherland's cause of death to be multiple blunt force injuries.

Sutherland was found dead near her home in Newport last month days after she went missing while jogging. The Jackson County Sheriff said Thursday the full autopsy report has not been completed and there will be no more updates until it is.

Quake Lewellyn, 28, is facing Capitol Murder charges for the killing.

Arkansas State Police special agent Mike McNeill said during a probable cause hearing last month that Lewellyn saw Sutherland walking on County Road 41, turned his truck around and forced Sutherland into the back of the vehicle. McNeill said Lewellyn drove about three miles to a farm where he raped Sutherland, killed her and buried the body.

The medical examiner said the manner of death is considered a homicide.

Lewellyn struck Sutherland with truck, raped her, authorities say in affidavit

    KAIT 8 News

NEWPORT, Ark. (KAIT) - A man accused of capital murder and rape in the death of a Jackson County woman earlier this year struck the woman with his vehicle, then committed rape, prosecutors said in a probable cause affidavit released Friday.

According to Arkansas Court Connect, the court records on Quake Lewellyn were released in the Sydney Sutherland case.

Lewellyn was also arrested in August on suspicion of kidnapping and abuse of a corpse in the case.

According to the affidavit, Arkansas State Police investigators interviewed Lewellyn about the case.

Jackson County deputies got a call Aug. 19 about Sutherland being missing. Authorities found her iPhone Aug. 20 in a field near her home.

Police said in the affidavit that Lewellyn saw Sutherland running on County Road 41 before she disappeared and that a search of his phone netted evidence in the case.

“During a consent search of Quake Lewellyn’s phone, agents located a location services application which tracks the phone’s geographical location. Approximately an hour after Sutherland was discovered missing, Lewellyn’s location services application indicated that he was at a geographical location approximately 2.36 miles from where Sutherland’s phone was located,” the affidavit noted.

Sutherland’s body was found Aug. 21, just yards from where the app indicated where Lewellyn was, authorities said in the affidavit.

Lewellyn was given his Miranda rights and was interviewed.

“Lewellyn stated that he struck Sutherland with his vehicle. Lewellyn stated he then loaded Sutherland up into his pickup and transported her to the area indicated on the location services application,” the affidavit noted.

ASP said in the affidavit that Lewellyn told them that he then raped and buried Sutherland.

Lewellyn, who is being held without bond, is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 29 for arraignment.

Region 8 News will have more information as its becomes available.

Sydney Sutherland's alleged killer pleads not guilty

    KATV News

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — A Newport farmer facing capital murder charges for the killing of 25-year-old Sydney Sutherland pleaded not guilty on Thursday morning.

Quake Lewellyn, 28, waived his arraignment scheduled for Thursday, according to his attorney. He is set to appear back in court on February 16.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, capital murder, abuse of a corpse and rape.

Lewellyn was arrested in August after Sutherland’s body was found yards from Lewellyn's location found on the location tracking app Life360, authorities said in an affidavit released earlier this month.

His mother later gave police surveillance footage that showed a dent in Lewellyn's trucks that appeared the day of Sutherland's disappearance, according to an affidavit released on Wednesday. The footage also showed him wearing shoes that matched footprints found at the scene of the crime, detectives said.

Lewellyn was given his Miranda rights and was interviewed.

“Lewellyn stated that he struck Sutherland with his vehicle. Lewellyn stated he then loaded Sutherland up into his pickup and transported her to the area indicated on the location services application,” the affidavit said.

Lewellyn told Arkansas State Police that he then raped and buried Sutherland.

The state medical examiner found that Sutherland's death was caused by multiple blunt force injuries.

Court filings detail evidence against Sydney Sutherland's accused killer

    By Paige Cushman
    KATV News

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Newly-released court documents show that the family of a man who admitted to killing Arkansas nurse Sydney Sutherland has helped detectives with their investigation.

Quake Lewellyn, 28, was arrested in August on suspicion of kidnapping and abuse of a corpse after Sutherland’s body was found two days after she disappeared while jogging between Newport and Grubbs.

Police found the geo-locating app Life360 on Lewellyn's phone after he agreed to let them search it. The app placed him three yards from the scene of the crime the day Sutherland disappeared, a court affidavit states.

Lewellyn told agents with the Arkansas State Police that he ran Sutherland over with his vehicle, drove her to a nearby field and raped her on the tailgate of his truck, according to an affidavit released earlier this month. He said he then dug a hole with a shovel and buried her.

The Newport farmer told officers during an interview that he barely knew Sutherland, authorities said. But according to an affidavit, they graduated from the same small high school in Tuckerman, which typically has less than 200 students. The two were also Facebook friends at one point, police said.

Seven search warrant affidavits were filed in Jackson County Court on Wednesday afternoon. The records list clothing taken from both of his parents’ houses, data taken from Facebook and Life360 and surveillance footage given to detectives by Lewellyn’s mother.

An affidavit states that Lewellyn's mother contacted detectives to hand over home surveillance footage from the day of Sutherland’s disappearance. Lewellyn’s wife, who filed for divorce last month, helped detectives review the footage and pointed out a dent on his truck that appeared the day Sutherland disappeared.

Both Lewellyn and his father gave detectives permission to search his 2019 GMC pickup truck, records show. Police said they found blood on the tailgate.

In the surveillance footage, Lewellyn is seen wearing “Sanuk style” shoes that detectives believe match footprints found at the scene. During a search at Lewellyn’s mother’s home, detectives reportedly found the pair seen in the video and have taken them as evidence. They had also found a similar pair of shoes in his truck that did not match the footprints.

Lewellyn reportedly told detectives he was wearing Ariat work boots when he buried Sutherland. A detective said in an affidavit that Lewellyn was wearing the same boots during his initial interview. The boots have been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to be traced for evidence.

Lewellyn told detectives that he put the clothes he was wearing when he killed her in a laundry basket at his mothers’ home. During a search of the home, police took a pair of black pants, a black shirt with blonde hair on it, a pair of black and pink shorts, a pair of dry-fit pants, two pairs of men’s jeans, a tank top, a pair of socks and a men’s shirt from the laundry basket. Detectives also searched his father’s home in Grubbs for evidence and took one maroon t-shirt, according to an affidavit.

After the Arkansas State Police issued a search warrant, Facebook turned over Lewellyn’s account data including messages, photos and videos. Life360 also gave detectives Lewellyn’s account data including event history, identifying information, recordings and event history linked to the account from July through August. AT&T turned over Sutherland’s cell phone records so that detectives could track her location during the kidnapping,

Lewellyn waived his formal arraignment scheduled for Thursday and pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, capital murder, abuse of a corpse and rape. He is set to appear back in court on February 16.

Devastated mom of murdered Sydney Sutherland believes 28-year-old 'evil killer' should get the death penalty for mowing down the jogger, 25, before raping and dumping her body

The heartbroken mother of a murdered 24-year-old jogger said she hopes her daughter's killer gets the death penalty.

Quake Lewellyn, 28, was taken into custody over the rape and murder of 25-year-old Sydney Sutherland after her body was found dumped in Newport in rural Arkansas late September.

Lewellyn told police he plowed down Sutherland with his truck while she was out running on the Jackson County Road 41 South on August 19, according to court documents obtained by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in October.

He then allegedly admitted to loading Sutherland's body onto his truck and driving her to a deserted field. Police said Lewellyn then raped Sutherland and buried her body.

The suspect has since pleaded not guilty to capital murder, kidnapping, rape and abuse of a corpse.

Maggy Sutherland, the jogger's 55-year-old mother, told The Sun: 'Everyone is still in shock, it just does not seem real. It's like we are living a nightmare, not just the family but also the community.'

She added: 'As a family, we are living day to day and trying to get through this tragedy. We are grieving the best way we know how. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think of her and miss her pretty smile.'

'To me, he deserves the death penalty, he is a monster, an evil monster. She did not deserve any of that,' she said
'To me, he deserves the death penalty, he is a monster, an evil monster. She did not deserve any of that,' she said

Nicknamed 'Sassy,' Maggy described her daughter as being a very 'beautiful, caring and loving person.' She added that the pair were 'best friends.'

Maggy feels Lewellyn is deserving of the death penalty and hopes he gets that sentence during his trial next year.

'I don't know what he got out of that because he took a beautiful life, a young woman who had a bright future,' the heartbroken mother asserted. 'He was very cruel to do what he did and the way that he did it.

'To me, he deserves the death penalty, he is a monster, an evil monster. She did not deserve any of that.'

Maggy shared that she frequents the various areas where her daughter was last seen and where Sydney's body was found, just days after she was reported missing.

She said: 'I still go to where it was at, I've walked it, I've done every step she's taken, to try and see what happened. He will never tell the truth.'

Sydney's mom, a receptionist at a local dental office, shared that the family had just returned from a trip to Destin, Florida, when the jogger went missing.

'We'd had a great trip, and she loved the beach. Everything was just right that day,' Maggy said. 'She came over, we talked a little bit, and she went and got my mail and she came back.

'She said, "I'm going to go home, I'm going to bake some brownies or cookies."

'She was leaving and I said, "I love you, I'll talk to you later". She said, "I love you too". And that was the last I heard from her.'

At around 5pm, Maggy realized her daughter was missing when she received a call from Sydner's boyfriend. She called other family members and soon they were looking all around the Newport area for Sydney.

'I just threw my hands up like, "We've been everywhere down that road she ran and there was no sign, nothing". I said, "Something's wrong". And that's when the tragedy began.

'I panicked, I just thought... has someone gone through here, drug-related, and snatched her up?'

Maggy contacted the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and had AT&T track Sydney's phone and Apple Watch as more gathered at the couple's home.

'She did not do this run [as a] routine,' Maggy shared. 'She was a nurse. She had different shifts all the time. It was never every day and at no certain time.

'We searched all night long, by the next day we had several different departments, state police, FBI, and I would say nearly 300 people volunteering.

'We did not get sleep for days, we did not get sleep until they found her.'

Sydney's parents and two brothers were notified of Sydney's death on the Friday after her body was discovered.

'We were very traumatized by this, she was the light of our lives,' Maggy said.

'But we stuck together as a very close family, and we stayed together in the days afterwards.'

Following reports of her disappearance, Lewellyn joined a Facebook page dedicated to searching for Sutherland.

Sutherland, who worked as a nurse, was last seen alive out jogging on August 19.

She was reported missing after failing to return to the home she shared with her boyfriend of four years, Alex Nicholson.

Police found her body two days later following a wide scale search operation using K-9 units and helicopter crews.

They had previously located her iPhone about a quarter-mile from her home.

Authorities identified Lewellyn as a suspect after using data from his own cellphone that put him in the vicinity of where Sutherland's phone was found.

Lewellyn and Sutherland were known to each other but the nature of their relationship remains unclear.

He was arrested August 21 and is being held without bond at the Randolph County jail.

Lewellyn is facing charges of capital murder, rape, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse.

During his initial court appearance earlier this month, Lewellyn wore a bullet-proof vest and an orange prison jumpsuit as he arrived at the courthouse.

Attorney requests mental evaluation for Quake Lewellyn in Sutherland case

    By Region 8 Newsdesk
    KAIT News

NEWPORT, Ark. (KAIT) - The attorney for a man accused of capital murder, kidnapping, and rape of a Jackson County woman earlier this year has requested a mental evaluation in the case.

According to Arkansas Court Connect, attorney William O. “Bill” James of Little Rock made the request Nov. 19 in Jackson County Circuit Court for Quake Lewellyn.

Lewellyn, 28, of Jonesboro was arrested in August after an investigation into the death of Sydney Sutherland.

James said in the one-page filing that he believes the evaluation is needed.

“That defense counsel has reason to believe that due to mental disease or defect, Mr. Lewellyn may not fully understand the proceedings against him, and may not have been able to fully appreciate the criminality of the conduct with which he is accused and his ability to assist in his defense may be in question,” James wrote in the filing. “That pursuant to A.C.A. 5-2-304, Counsel for Defense requests that a mental evaluation be performed to determine the Defendant’s fitness to proceed and criminal responsibility and this request should include testing for mental retardation. Counsel requests a written report be filed with this Court in order for this Court to make a determination as to his mental state. This request is in the best interest of Mr. Lewellyn, and not for the purpose to delay.”

As of Thursday, no action had been taken on the request, Arkansas Court Connect noted.

Officials said in August that the Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that Sutherland’s cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries, with the manner of death being homicide.

Man accused in kidnapping, killing of Arkansas jogger declared mentally fit for trial

    By Mitch McCoy
    Fox 16 News

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A psychologist at the Arkansas State Hospital reports the man at the center of a high-profile Arkansas killing is fit to stand trial, according to documents released Friday.

Quake Lewellyn, 28, is facing charges of capital murder, kidnapping and rape in the death of 25-year-old Sydney Sutherland. Sutherland vanished after going for a jog near her home in Jackson County.

Lewellyn went under a mental forensic exam in early January about a month after the court ordered the review.

In her report, licensed forensic psychologist Lacey Willett says Lewellyn is fit to stand trial.

“It is my opinion that at the time of the alleged conduct, Mr. Lewellyn did not manifest symptoms of a mental disease or mental deflect,” Willett wrote.

The report shows Lewellyn indicated that he has no history of mental health treatment and there is no mention of any bizarre speech or conduct during Lewellyn’s interview with police.

Willett found that Lewellyn ‘did not lack the capacity to appreciate the criminality of his conduct.’

“During the current evaluation, he disclosed that he put Sydney’s body on the tailgate of his truck “to hide her body so [he] wouldn’t be in trouble,” reflecting that he knew his conduct could result in legal consequences,” she wrote.

Lewellyn was polite and cooperative and he maintained adequate attention and concentration throughout the evaluation, according to the report.

The State Hospital found Lewellyn fit to stand trial, according to the report.

“Mr. Lewellyn currently possesses an adequate factual and rational understanding of the proceedings against him, as well as the capacity to rationally assist in his own defense,” Willett said.
