    Iran Executions - 2021

Three Baluch Prisoners executed in Zahedan

Elias Ghalandarzehi and Hassan Dehvari, two Baluch prisoners on death row, have been executed at Zahedan Central Prison on charges of “baghy (rebellion against Islamic ruler) . A third prisoner named Omid Mahmoudzehi, on death row for the charge of “moharebeh” (enmity against God), was also executed along with the men.

According to state-run ISNA, three prisoners were executed at Zahedan Central Prison in the early hours of this morning. Their identities are reported as Hassan Dehvari, Elias Ghalandarzehi and Omid Mahmoudzehi.

Both Saravan residents, 28 year old Hassan Dehvari was a married father of five and Elias Ghalandarzehi, 21, was an only child and married with a daughter.

Yesterday, IHR reported that Hassan and Elias had been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions. The two Baluch men had been sentenced to death on charges of “baghy (rebellion against Islamic ruler) through membership in Jaish al-Adl.”

According to a letter the men wrote from prison, before being transferred to prison, they had spent seven months in the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention centre “under torture” and had twice been taken before Judge Shah Mohammadi at Branch Six of the Revolutionary court.

The third prisoner executed in Zahedan prison this morning was Omid Mahmoudzehi. ISNA reported that he was executed for charges including “moharebeh (enmity against God) armed robbery and murder.”

Over the last fortnight, executions have intensified in the minority populated regions in the South and West of Iran. All the prisoners sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Courts have been denied their right to due process and a fair trial.

Iran Human Rights had previously warned that based on previous years, there would be a rise in executions over the Christmas and New Year period when most international organisations and civil society are closed for the holidays.

Prisoner Fereydoun Tavakoli executed in Rasht

A prisoner sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder, was executed with juvenile offender, Hassan Rezaei, in Rasht Central Prison on New Year’s Eve. Another prisoner committed suicide after his brother was transferred for execution.

According to Hrana News Agency, on the morning of 31 December 2020, a male prisoner was executed in Rasht Central Prison. The prisoner who had been sentenced to qisas, has been identified as Fereydoun Tavakoli, around 35 years old. Iran Human Right sources have also verified his execution.

At the time of writing, Fereydoun Tavakoli’s execution has not be reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

IHR previously reported that on the same day, juvenile offender, Hassan Rezaei was also executed at Rasht Central Prison. (https://iranhr.net/en/articles/4558/)

According to Hrana, three other prisoners were also transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their executions that day, but were returned to their cells after managing to extend the deadline to pay their diyya (blood money). One of those prisoners was Mehdi Ashouri, who has been sentenced to qisas for murder. His brother, Kamran Ashouri was serving his sentence for drug-related charges at the same prison. Terrified of his brother’s execution, Kamran hung himself in the Ward 4 bathrooms, after Mehdi was transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution.

Kamran Ashouri, who had been held in Ward 4 of Rasht Central Prison for 12 years on drug-related charges, left a suicide note explaining that his brother’s execution and his wife filing for divorce, were the reasons for ending his life.

According to Iran Human Rights’ annual report, at least 225 of the 280 of those executed in 2019 were charged with "premeditated murder."

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.

Iranian wrestler Mehdi Ali Hosseini at imminent risk of execution

Mehdi Ali Hosseini, a wrestler on death row for “pre-meditated murder” committed during a fight, is due to be executed in the coming days.

According to state-run ISNA, Mehdi Ali Hosseini, a young wrestler on death row, will be executed in the coming days. He was sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for murder during a fight in 2016. News of his imminent execution has received widespread coverage in Iranian media and sports community.

There has been no mention of his location or the possible location of his execution in any of the published reports.

According to Mehdi Ali Hosseini’s family, he would be executed in the next week after all pleas, efforts and mediation by those around them, failed to convince his victim’s family to grant their consent to stop his execution.

Prisoner Majid Rigi executed in Zahedan

A prisoner sentenced to death on “drug-related” charges, has been executed in Zahedan Central Prison.

According to Iran Human Rights, a male prisoner was executed on the morning of Saturday, January 9, in Zahedan Central Prison. His identity has been established as 37-year-old Majid Rigi, who had been sentenced to death on “drug-related” charges.

According to the Baluch Activists Campaign which first published news of his execution, Majid Rigi had spent ten years behind bars on the drug charges.

It should be noted that ten Baluch citizens have been executed in Iran over the past fortnight.

At the time of writing, Majid Rigi’s execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

There has been a dramatic drop in drug-related executions since a new article was added to the Anti-Drugs Law around three years ago. The amendment, which was passed into law in 2017, specifically restricts the death penalty and provides a degree of reduction in some drug-related cases.

According to Iran Human Rights’ annual report on the death penalty in Iran, at least 30 people were executed on drug-related charges in 2019.

Iranian Wrestler Mehdi Ali Hosseini Executed in Dezful

Iran Human Rights (IHR); January 25, 2021: Mehdi Ali Hosseini, a wrestler sentenced to qisas (retribution-in-kind) for “pre-meditated murder,” has been executed in Dezful Prison.

According to state-run ISNA who quoted the judiciary’s public relations of Khuzestan Province, a prisoner was executed in Dezful Prison this morning.

The Asr Jonoub Telegram channel has identified the executed prisoner as 30-year-old Mehdi Ali Hosseini. Mehdi Ali Hosseini was a wrestler whose imminent execution had received widespread coverage and support from both the international and Iranian sports community.

According to previous reports, he was sentenced to death for “pre-meditated murder during a fight.” The judiciary’s public relations of Khuzestan Province is now claiming that he had committed the murder during an “armed robbery.” Judicial officials had previously denied that Mehdi Ali Hosseini was a wrestler.

It should be noted that defendants are systematically denied their right to due process and a fair trial and in most cases, convictions are based on false confessions obtained under torture.

As there are no legal distinctions made between murder and manslaughter, whether voluntary or involuntary in Iran, those charged under the umbrella term of “premeditated murder” will receive the death penalty regardless of intent and the circumstances.

Iranian woman dies of heart attack before execution, still gets hanged

An Iranian woman who died of a heart attack shortly before her execution last week was hanged anyway to placate her alleged victim’s mother, her lawyer said.

Zahra Ismaili had been convicted of murder for killing her husband. Ismaili’s lawyer, Omid Moradi, said her husband was abusive and that she killed him out of self-defense, The Times reported.

Moradi said Ismaili was sent to be hanged in the Rajai Shahr Prison, in the town of Karaj, near Tehran.

She was forced to wait behind 16 men who were executed and watch. While in line, she collapsed, apparently from a heart attack, and died.

Her lifeless body was hanged anyway so her husband’s mother could kick the chair out from under her legs, which was considered her right.

Her cause of death was listed as “cardiac arrest,” according to Al-Arabiya.

The woman’s husband, Alireza Zamani was an official in the Iranian intelligence ministry, Moradi said. The couple had two children.

Iran draws harsh criticism from the international community for its executions, which include killings of dissidents, non-violent offenders and people convicted of committing crimes as minors.

Iran executes more people than any country besides China. The UN said Iran executed at least 233 people in 2020, including at least three who were minors at the time of their alleged offenses.
