Aaron Jacoby Williams Sentenced to Minimum 25 Years in Prison in 2021 ID Murder of Oliver Ashland

Garden City man accused of killing fiancé's 2-year-old son

    CBS2

GARDEN CITY, Idaho (CBS2) — A Garden City man is accused of killing a 2-year-old boy in his care.

Aaron Jacoby Williams, 31, was ordered held in the Ada County Jail without bond.

Police say Williams was arrested after the toddler was brought to a local clinic Monday afternoon, unconscious and not breathing. He was taken to St. Luke's in Boise, where he died from his injuries. Investigators determined the child was being cared for by his mother's fiancé, Aaron Williams when he received deadly injuries.

Prosecutor Tanner Stellmon told the judge that Williams had confessed to being violent toward the toddler.

"Ultimately the defendant has made admissions to inciting violence upon the child and losing his cool or losing his patience with the victim. That plays into the factor of the continued threat to the community," Stellmon said.

Medical personnel determined the toddler died from "traumatic injury."

"I can't advise the court as to what the ultimate cause of death was but there were some alarming findings including fractured ribs, severed liver, and some internal injuries of the sort. There are indications that there may have been head trauma," Stellmon told the judge.

The prosecutor said Williams was on probation for a previous domestic violence incident, involving a woman who was not the 2-year-old's mother, at the time of his arrest.

Stellmon said the mother of the toddler who was killed was living with Williams and was pregnant with his child. William also has a 5-year-old son from a previous relationship, who lived with him sometimes. Stellmon said the 5-year-old was home when the toddler was injured.

Stellmon asked for an order to be issued blocking Williams from having contact with the mother of the slain 2-year-old, as well as any other children.

"I’ve requested that he not be permitted within 20 feet of children,” Stellmon said. " You want to take in totality the risk he poses to minors in the community when he becomes enraged or frustrated, as well as the damage that he visited upon the child in this case, a 2-year-old in his care."

Williams' defense attorney, Eric Rolfsen, argued that the bond of $3 million was excessive.

“Mr. Williams does not have a particularly violent background as portrayed by the state. He does have a misdemeanor domestic violence case. My understanding he's been on probation for that for quite some time and was progressing well on that,” Rolfsen said.

Rolfsen asked multiple times that Williams be allowed to speak to his 5-year-old son.

“He would very much like to at least be allowed a phone contact with his 5-year-old son that would be very important to him,” Rolfsen said.

The defense attorney asked the court to consider a lower bond, in the range of $25,000 to $50,000.

"Whatever happened here is situational - if there is a no-contact order with children, this is a situation that just can't occur," he said.

Judge Michael Oths ordered Williams held without bond but rejected the prosecution's request for a no-contact order. If the suspect is not getting out of jail, the judge said, he felt the no-contact order would be unnecessary.

A preliminary hearing is set for March 4.

“This is a very sad day for our community," Garden City Police chief Rick Allen said. "Our hearts go out to the child, his mother, and all of the family members...The investigation into this homicide will continue as we are committed to seeking justice for this young toddler.”

Ada coroner identifies 2-year-old who was killed; murder suspect remains in Boise jail

    By Jacob Scholl
    The Idaho Statesman

The Ada County Coroner's Office has released the name of a child who died at a Boise hospital earlier this week, leading to an Idaho man being charged with murder.

Authorities identified the toddler as 2-year-old Oliver Ashland, who was rushed to St. Luke's Regional Medical Center before he died at around 5 p.m. Monday, according to the coroner. Neither a manner nor cause of death was revealed as of Friday in the coroner's news release, as those determinations will be made following additional tests.

Investigators have said the boy had "significant" injuries before he was taken to the hospital.

Garden City police arrested 30-year-old Aaron Jacoby Williams and he has been charged with first-degree murder in Oliver's death. Williams remains in the Ada County Jail after a Tuesday court hearing; he is being held without bond.

At around 3:45 p.m. Monday, Garden City and Boise police were sent to a health clinic after hearing reports of the child's injuries. The child was unconscious and not breathing, according to a news release from the Garden City Police Department. Ada County Paramedics later rushed the child to the emergency room at St. Luke's.

Police say the injuries took place at a home in Garden City, located in the 200 block of East 44th Street, and authorities allege that the child was in the care of Williams, the fiancee of the boy's mother, at that time.

Williams' next court appearance is a preliminary hearing set for Thursday, March 4. If convicted, Williams could be sentenced to a term of up to life in prison or prosecutors could seek the death penalty.

GARDEN CITY, Idaho — A Garden City man who fatally injured his fiancee's 2-year-old son earlier this year pleaded guilty to the killing Tuesday.

Aaron Jacoby Williams, 31, entered a guilty plea to first-degree murder in the February death of Oliver Ashland.

The toddler had been left in Williams' care the day he was killed. Prosecutors say Williams admitted to "losing his cool" and being violent towards the boy. The unconscious child was brought in to a local health clinic, then rushed to St. Luke's Children's Hospital, but died from his injuries.

Prosecutor Tanner Stellmon told a judge at Williams arraignment that the child had been "beaten to death" by Williams. Doctors discovered Oliver had a head injury, broken ribs, damage to his internal organs and extensive bruises on his body.

Williams, who was on probation for domestic violence, was arrested the same day Oliver died at the hospital. He has been held without bond in the Ada County Jail since his arrest.

Williams will face up to life in prison at his Dec. 6 sentencing.

I haven't found anything that suggests he's been sentenced yet.

‘You stole Oliver’s life’: Garden City man sentenced to life in Idaho 2-year-old’s death

    By Ian Max Stevenson
    The Idaho Statesman

A Garden City man was sentenced to life in prison for murder Friday in the death of his fiancee’s 2-year-old son.

Aaron Wiliams, 31, will spend a minimum of 25 years in prison and then be eligible for parole, according to the sentence handed down by 4th District Judge Derrick O’Neill. He also awarded over $11,000 in restitution to the victim’s family.

Williams pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in October.

The child’s fatal injuries occurred while he was in Williams’ care in February 2021. Police were called to a local clinic after receiving a report of a child with “significant injuries,” according to a Garden City Police Department news release. Later that day, the boy, identified as Oliver Ashland, was sent to St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise, where he died.

On Friday afternoon, O’Neill stressed how Williams had covered up his conduct after the 2-year-old had been taken to a hospital. O’Neill said Williams had previously tried to convince the boy’s mother that the child was clumsy, rather than being beaten, and that he asked her to lie to the hospital and say she had been at home while Oliver was in the care of Williams.

The judge also noted the defendant had a history of drug use.

O’Neill also said forensic evidence at the home, which included blood spatter in several rooms, indicated that Williams had tried to “cover (his) tracks.”

“You stole Oliver’s life from him,” the judge said. “We’ll never know what Oliver would have become.”

Defense attorney Eric Robert Rolfsen said Williams has a history of anger issues and violence, but was remorseful.

“He’s an amazingly easygoing, pleasant, functional guy,” Rolfsen said. “When he loses it, he loses it. And when he loses it, he can be kind of dangerous.”

Williams had a prior domestic violence case, Rolfsen said.

In a statement before sentencing, Williams said through tears that he accepted whatever punishment was coming.

“There’s no words that can begin to mend the pain that I’ve caused,” he said. “I do know that I’ve had anger my whole life, and it’s ruined a lot of people’s lives."

O’Neill cited Williams’ mental disorders, including intermittent explosive disorder, and the fact that he pleaded guilty as mitigating factors. The judge also said evidence indicated that the 2-year-old’s crying set Williams off, causing him to go outside to try to keep his temper in check at first.

“You knew you had a trigger mechanism, you knew you had a temper,” O’Neill said.

“Maybe the next person who’s standing there in a fit of rage hears about what you were sentenced to and thinks, and maybe another young person isn’t injured.”
