Mother facing death penalty for daughter’s murder, prosecutor says

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - A mother has been indicted for the murder of her 4-year-old daughter, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters announced Monday.

Tianna Robinson, 25, is facing the death penalty for the death of Nahla Miller, Deters said.

Robinson was arrested on April 13 for punching and strangling the 4-year-old until her heart stopped, he said.

“On the April 13 incident, they [Robinson and her boyfriend Resnley Washington] left Nahla at home when they went to Kroger by herself,” Prosecutor Deters explained. “They came back. She [Nahla] was not toilet trained, had urinated. The mother snaps; attacks Nahla. Hits her, strangles her.”

The 4-year-old suffered the following injuries from that day’s attack (WARNING: the details might be disturbing for some):

    • Broken left arm
    • Bruising to the lower lungs, adrenal glands, diaphragm, stomach, liver, colon, pancreas, and mouth
    • Bleeding in the muscles of the throat, and back of the head
    • Significant burn to the back of her right hand

Nahla was taken to the hospital where she remained on life support until April 21, the prosecutor said.

The cause of her death was found to be strangulation and blunt force trauma, the coroner’s office determined.

"I have never understood how anyone could hurt a little kid so badly, especially the child’s own mother,” Prosecutor Deters said.

Nahla was “scarred head to toe,” Deters explained, and investigators think she was being abused for months.

“There’s a history of strangulation marks including ligature marks on her neck,” Deters said. “She had a healing broken rib. She was obviously severely malnourished.”

She weighed just 23 pounds when she died, the prosecutor said on Monday. The average weight for a 4-year-old girl is between 28-44 pounds, according to Cincinnati Children's.

"This child was enduring, really enduring a tremendous torture at the hands of her mother,” Deters said.

Robinson is charged with aggravated murder with the death penalty specification, murder, felonious assault, and endangering children, according to Deters.

Court documents show Robinson’s boyfriend, Rensley Washington, was charged with endangering children and obstructing justice in connection with the girl’s death.

They indicate he lied to investigators about the 4-year-old’s injuries claiming she fell off a scooter and was injured.

Documents: 4-year-old Nahla Miller's father was trying to get custody before she died

    By Brianna Ric
    Cincinnati Enquirer

Nahla Miller's father was attempting to get custody of her before the 4-year-old died from injuries she sustained after she was allegedly beaten by her mother.

Nathaniel Miller, Nahla's Father, filed for custody in January, saying that Nahla's mother Tianna Robinson had cut off all contact with him.

In court documents, Miller said, "Tianna Robinson has stopped letting me see my daughter after I been there her whole life. I was even getting her half of the week every week. She has stopped talking to me and won't text any of my numbers back."

Robinson began to refuse all calls from Miller beginning in July 2020, according to documents.

A custody trial date was set for April 30 but Nahla was attacked days before, on April 14. She would spend nine days on life support before she died from injuries.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Nahla had the following injuries: a broken left arm, bruising to the lower lungs, adrenal glands, diaphragm, liver, stomach, colon, pancreas and mouth. Bleeding in the muscles in the throat, bleeding in the back of the head, a significant burn to the back of her right hand.

Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services attempted wellness checks on Nahla in the weeks prior to her death, but were blocked from entering the residence, according to Deters.

Nahla was living with her mother and her mother's boyfriend, Rensley Washington, 25, in addition to other family members including Washington's son.

Both children were neglected or abused, according to court documents from Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services. Washington's son was also removed from the home after Nahla was beaten.

Washington has been charged with endangering children and obstructing official business, according to court documents.

Robinson told the Springfield Police Department that she would leave Nahla in the basement for long periods of time without food or water and that she beat her until the child fainted.

Robinson said that she abused Nahla due to frustrations with potty training her, according to police.

After the attack, Hamilton County Juvenile court granted interim temporary custody of Nahla to Miller, before she died on April 21.

Robinson is now charged with one count of aggravated murder with a death penalty specification, two counts of murder, one count of felonious assault and one count of endangering children.

Robinson is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center on a $1 million bond. Washington is also being held on a $40,000 bond.

Grandmother of 4-year-old who died says child's mom 'deserves the death penalty'

    Tianna Robinson faces capital punishment

    By Courtney Francisco
    WCPO News

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The paternal grandmother of a 4-year-old who died after months of abuse said the child's mother deserves the death penalty.

Tianna Robinson faces capital punishment, accused of causing the death of her daughter, Nahla Miller, in 2021. Robinson's boyfriend, Rensley Washington III, is charged with obstruction after investigators said he lied twice during the case.

Washington's pretrial hearing is scheduled for March 25, while Robinson is not expected back in court until August for a competency hearing.

Miller's paternal grandmother, Monica Greene, cried as looked at photos of the 4-year-old Monday.

"How do you hear her scream and you don’t do anything?” Greene said. “This isn’t just a children services issue. What do we do as a community to stop this or bring more awareness to child abuse?”

Miller is one of 14 children who died in Hamilton Count in 2021, according to Job and Family Services. Nine of those deaths were due to substantiated child abuse. Five cases are pending.

Greene said she and her son, Nathaniel Miller, reported abuse suspicions in fall 2020 after Robinson stopped letting them see the little girl.

“We sent the police over there to a couple of (wellness) checks,” Greene said. "They don’t come to the door."

By January 2021, Nathaniel Miller applied for custody. The court date was set for April 30.

Springfield Township Police Department said April 13 Robinson called 911 to report the child passed out. Paramedics took Miller to the hospital, where doctors put her on life support.

Court documents said Robinson later admitted to punching and strangling the girl until she could no longer breathe, and doctors at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital said they observed signs of "prolonged physical abuse" when Miller was admitted.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said doctors documented a broken arm, internal bleeding and bruising as well as a burn on her hand from the incident. He said doctors noted months of prior abuse and malnutrition.

Miller was 23 pounds, half of what a healthy 4-year-old weighs, when she was admitted. She died nine days later.

“His court date was the day we buried her,” Greene said. “The day could have possibly gotten custody is the day we had to say our final goodbyes.”

In May, Deters announced he was seeking the death penalty against the mother. He said he believes the couple left the toddler alone at the home while they went to the grocery store. When they returned, she had a bathroom accident.

"She was not toilet trained, had urinated," Deters said. "The mother snaps, attacks Nahla, hits her, strangles her."

Deters said Miller endured tremendous torture while under her mother's supervision.

“She deserves the death penalty," Greene said. "She deserves 10 times over."

In June 2021, Robinson's attorneys filed a 40-page motion to dismiss the capital components of the case. They argued Ohio’s death penalty can be imposed for arbitrary or discriminatory reasons and that it is “constitutionally intolerable.”

A judge has yet to rule on that.

The following month, Robinson's attorneys argued she is incompetent. They wrote in the court document that she cries, makes incoherent responses and shuts down with her head on the table.

A judge ordered six months of mental health treatment at Summit Behavioral Health. In February, a judge ordered another six months of treatment.

Prosecutors plan to hold a pretrial hearing for Washington March 25, saying he told investigators Miller was hurt on a scooter and that he and Robinson brought her to the store with them.

Greene said parents and loved ones need to keep fighting to ensure their children's safety.

“Try harder," Greene said. "Go with your gut. If you’re thinking something’s wrong, what’s the worst that can happen? They tell you to leave?"

In addition to the motion to dismiss the death penalty component, Robinson’s attorneys have applied for a change of venue.

Woman who killed her 4-year-old daughter in 2021 accepts plea deal

    By Felicia Johnson
    WCPO News

SPRINGFIELD TWP., Ohio — A woman accused of causing the death of her 4-year-old daughter in 2021 accepted a plea deal in court Thursday morning.

Tianna Robinson could have faced the death penalty for the charges that were leveled against her, including aggravated murder, felonious assault, endangering a child and obstruction of justice. On Thursday, she agreed to plead guilty to one count of aggravated murder in exchange for the prosecution agreeing to drop the other charges and any death penalty recommendations.

In 2021, Springfield Township Police Department said April 13 Robinson called 911 to report her daughter, Nahla Miller, passed out.

Robinson's plea deal stipulated that, since she would no longer face the death penalty, she would spend life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
