An Alabama police officer was "ambushed" and fatally shot early Tuesday morning while on duty.

Selma Police Officer Marquis Moorer, 25, was shot Tuesday between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m. when he returned home on a lunch break and was ambushed, Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said.

Moorer’s significant other was also injured by the gun fire. The woman’s name has not been released, but she was taken to a local hospital.

"The Selma Police Department is devastated," Chief Kenta Fulford told a news conference Tuesday. "We’re asking the community for your prayers."

Moorer was "an upstanding officer who took his job seriously," Jackson added. He was lauded for making Selma’s first heroin arrest in a decade in 2019, shortly after he joined the police force.

No suspect has been arrested in the death, and state police are working with local authorities and members of a drug task force team to track down any leads.

The death comes amid an uptick in anti-police sentiment across the country following protests and riots against police brutality and calls to defund police departments from the Black Lives Matter movement and Democratic lawmakers.

Suspect held in connection to Selma police officer 'ambush' shooting death

    By Marty Roney
    Montgomery Advertiser

A suspect has been arrested in the slaying of an on-duty Selma police officer.

Marquiz Moorer, 25, was shot and killed early Tuesday morning in what Selma authorities describe as an "ambush." He was in uniform and taking his meal break at his home at Selma Square Apartments about 4 a.m. when shots were fired from outside, said Attorney General Steve Marshall.

Court and jail records show Javonte Cornius Stubbs, 18, of Selma is being held in the Chilton County Jail under capital murder and attempted murder charges. Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson confirmed his arrest.

Defendants in high profile cases are often held in counties other than where the crime occurred.

Along with Moorer, a woman described as either his wife or girlfriend, was also shot. Her condition was unknown Wednesday morning. She was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

U.S. Marshalls captured Stubbs at a Tuscaloosa apartment complex without incident early Wednesday morning, Jackson said.. No motive has been released in the shootings. Moorer's death marks the 15th homicide of the year for the city of about 17,000

Stubbs is being held on no bond, typical in a capital murder case. He faces two counts of capital murder; murder of a police officer and murder by shooting into an occupied dwelling, Jackson said

Stubbs is set for arraignment Friday morning in Selma. Mayor James Perkins and Police Chief Kenta Fulford held a press conference Wednesday at noon at the Carl Morgan Convention Center. They did not offer a possible motive in the case, with Perkins referring any questions to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency or Jackson’s office. ALEA is the lead agency in the investigation.

“We did this this right,” Perkins said. “We handed off the investigation to the SBI and the state did it right and delivered an arrest within 24 hours.”

After the press conference Jackson said he was unaware of any connection between Moorer and Stubbs. He also declined to comment on what type of gun was used, just saying that Moorer had been shot. He said more information will come out during Friday’s court proceeding.

Perkins thanked the various federal, state and local law enforcement agencies that flocked to Selma in the wake of the shooting and assisted in the investigation. Citizens also stepped up with information for the investigation.

“Selma has had 15 murders, and we have made arrests in nine of those,” he said. “I’m sure if people would come forward like they did with Officer Moorer’s shooting we could make arrests in those cases as well. If you see something, say it. If you know something, tell it.”

It is unclear at this time if there are any other suspects, Jackson said, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. He said he was confident there would be a quick arrest.

“You have this many agencies working this hard and things happen,” he said “It’s just dumb to shoot a police officer. You are tearing down your community, but you know every agency is going to respond.”

Slain Selma officer was ambushed, 'never had a chance,' DA says

    By Marty Roney
    Montgomery Advertiser

SELMA — The 18-year-old facing two counts of capital murder in the shooting death of an off-duty Selma police officer shook his head when asked if he did it.

JaVonte C. Stubbs of Selma, was led into the Dallas County Courthouse Friday morning wearing blaze orange jail garb and a bullet-resistant vest. He was restrained in handcuffs, leg irons and belly chains. He faces two counts of capital murder.

Stubbs had his first court appearance before Circuit Judge Collins Pettaway Jr. on Friday morning. About a dozen sheriff’s deputies transported Stubbs to the courthouse in a convoy of marked and unmarked vehicles.

As he was led inside, media gathered asked if he shot the officer. He shook his head and offered no further comment. During the proceeding, he gave several muted, “Yes, sirs,” to Pettaway’s questions about whether he understood the charges against him.

District Attorney Michael Jackson didn't release a motive to reporters. He has described the shooting as an “ambush.”

Moorer lived at Selma Square Apartments and was taking a meal break in his apartment between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. when the shooting occurred, Jackson said. He was shot with a rifle multiple times from outside the residence, according to court records and Jackson.

“The officer never had a chance,” Jackson said.

Moorer's girlfriend was struck in the leg and is in stable condition, Jackson said.

Stubbs is represented by Daryl Bender and Henry Anthony, attorneys from Birmingham. Bender handled the proceeding but was unavailable for comment after. The courtroom was packed with law enforcement officers in uniform and plain clothes.

Moorer’s family sat on the front row on the right hand side of the courtroom with Stubb’s family just a few feet away on the front row on the left side. A young man yelled out, “Stay strong, Bro!” as Stubbs was led from the courtroom.

Stubbs is being held without bail, standard in a capital murder case. He faces two charges of capital murder: murder while shooting into an occupied dwelling and murder of a law enforcement officer. He faces attempted murder charges in the shooting of Moorer’s girlfriend, who was in the apartment at the time. No other details came out in the proceeding, but Pettaway set a preliminary hearing for Sept. 17.

A second suspect has been charged in the summer slaying of a Selma police officer.

Andrevious Quinton Carter, 22, was taken into custody Monday night, according to District Attorney Michael Jackson and court records made public Tuesday.

He is charged with capital murder in the July 27 shooting death of 25-year-old Officer Marquis Moorer, who died in a hail of gunfire at his apartment while he was on duty and home on a meal break.

Carter is also charged with attempted murder in the wounding of Moorer’s girlfriend, Shakiaria Barley, who was shot in the legs.

Carter is the second suspect charged in Moorer’s death. Javonte Cornuis, was arrested and charged the day after Moorer was killed.

The shooting happened at 4:10 a.m. that Tuesday when Moorer stopped by his apartment at Selma Square Apartments. Authorities have not released a motive in the slaying, but Jackson described the shooting as an “ambush.”

More than a dozen rifle rounds were fired into the apartment. Authorities said Moorer was found in his bedroom with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The cases against Stubbs were bound over to a grand jury in September. Carter has not yet made his first court appearance.

DNA of suspect in killing of Selma police officer found on shell casings at scene, records state

    By Carol Robinson

The capital murder case against a 22-year-old man charged in the summer shooting death of a Selma police officer will go to a grand jury for indictment consideration, a judge ruled Friday.

Andrevious Quinton Carter is charged with capital murder in the July 27 slaying of 25-year-old Officer Marquis Moorer, who died in a hail of rifle fire at his apartment while he was on duty and home on a meal break.

Carter is one of two suspects charged in the shooting which not only killed Moorer but also wounded his girlfriend, Shakiaria Barley.

Dallas County Judge Collins Pettaway on Friday bound the case over to the grand jury and ordered Carter to remain held without bail saying, Carter’s “DNA was found on shell casings at the scene with no plausible explanation.”

Carter was arrested in late October.

Javonte Cornuis Stubbs, an 18-year-old former Selma High School football standout, was arrested and charged the day after Moorer was killed.
