Makaylia Shaylynn Jolley Sentenced to LWOP in 2022 MS Slaying of 9-Week-Old Khalysie Lashay Jolley

Pearl Police expect to upgrade charges in case involving attempted murder of 9-week-old

Chief says ‘there’s a special place in Hell’ for the mother

By WLBT News Staff and Anthony Warren

PEARL, Miss. (WLBT) - Authorities are expecting to upgrade the charges any time now for a woman who was arrested Thursday for attempting to murder her 9-week-old child.

Rankin County and city of Pearl officials provided an update Friday on the case involving Makaylia Jolley, 20, a mother who was arrested Thursday for attempted murder and felony child abuse.

Barring a miracle, police say Jolley’s charges could soon be upgraded to capital murder.

Pearl Police Chief Dean Scott said Jolly’s infant daughter was still in critical condition at the Children’s Hospital of Mississippi, but her outlook was bleak.

“At this point, as small as she is, they’re trying to keep her comfortable and painless,” he said. “It’s just a matter of time, according to medical staff, at this point. Her injuries are too severe to attempt to treat.”

Scott said the baby is currently unresponsive and on a ventilator.

“All we can do is say a prayer for the child. You can beat up on me for talking about God if you want to. The good Lord figured this baby was too good for this evil world.”

Madison/Rankin County District Attorney Bubba Bramlett said if the charges are upgraded, his office would be seeking the death penalty.

The baby’s older brother is now living with his grandmother.

Jolley is currently being held at the Rankin County Jail. She is said to have shown no remorse.

Authorities did not say what prompted the incident. The chief said the woman had been previously arrested on drug-related charges.

Scott said the officers involved have been unable to sleep following the incident.

“This act was very deliberate and intentional,” Scott said. “She showed no remorse. And, as a chief, myself, my men and women, working with (the district attorney), we’re going to work hard to make sure she receives the just (punishment) she deserves."

According to police, several 9-1-1 calls came in around 2 p.m. on Thursday saying a woman had “repeatedly and forcibly” thrown her baby on the road.

When officers arrived, they found a separate woman holding a severely injured child.

The fire department and an ambulance arrived and began first aid on the infant.

The mother, Jolley, had run into the woods and was chased back toward the road where she was taken into custody.

Pearl authorities escorted the ambulance carrying the baby to Children’s in Jackson.

“She was the victim of a very cruel, intentional abuse by her mother,” Scott said. “I would encourage people, the Facebook judge and jury, to feel sympathy for the victim.”

    Accused Pearl Baby Killer Indicted

    By kingfish1985blogspot.com

A Rankin County grand jury indicted Makaylia Jolley for capital murder for the death of her eight-week old baby, Khalysie Lashay Jolley on December 8. The indictment states:

on or about May 12, 2022, in the county aforesaid and within the jurisdiction of this Court, did willfully, unlawfully, and feloniously, without authority of law and with or without any design to effect death, kill and murder Khalysie Lashay Jolley, a human being, while the said MAKA YLIA SHAYLYNN JOLLEY was then and there engaged in the commission of the crime of Felony Child Abuse and or Battery, in violation Miss. Code Ann. § 97-5- 39(2), (1972, as amended), and in violation of Miss. Code Ann.§ 97-3-19(2)(f), (1972, as amended), and being against the peace and dignity of the State of Mississippi.

Several witnesses called Pearl police on the afternoon of May 12 to report a young woman "repeatedly and forcibly" threw her baby on the roadway at 775 North Biederman Road. Police found another woman holding the severely injured baby. The defendant had fled into some nearby woods but police apprehended her after a brief pursuit.

A subdued Pearl Police Chief Dean Scott said at a May 12 press conference "due to her injuries, there is a very bleak outcome. Her injuries are too severe to even attempt to treat." Little Khalysie's internal organs soon shut down and her suffering mercifully ended.

Jolley has not yet been arraigned. She is currently undergoing a mental evaluation. District Attorney Bubba Bramlett said he will seek the death penalty.

‘Ms. Jolley will die in prison’: Pearl woman sentenced to life in murder of 7-week-old daughter

By Anthony Warren and WLBT News Staff

PEARL, Miss. (WLBT) - A Pearl woman who killed her seven-week-old daughter after “repeatedly and forcibly” throwing her into the concrete will spend the rest of her life behind bars.

On Monday, Rankin County Circuit Judge Steve Ratcliff sentenced Makaylia Jolley to life in prison without the possibility of parole after she pleaded guilty to capital murder in the death of her infant, Khalysie Lashay Jolley.

Jolley, who was wearing a yellow Rankin County Jail jumpsuit, was in the courtroom for about 20 minutes and said little more than “yes, sir” or “no, sir” when questioned by the judge.

Her sentencing came just days after Jolley agreed to enter a guilty plea. Had the case gone forward, Madison-Rankin District Attorney Bubba Bramlett said he would have sought the death penalty.

Bramlett said the decision to offer her a plea deal came last week, after Jolley’s mental health evaluation results came in, and after officials consulted with each other on the matter.

“We were going to extend her the opportunity to plead guilty by the end of the week,” he said. “Ms. Jolley and her attorneys filed a petition for a guilty plea last Friday.”

“The case ended 15 minutes ago right before your eyes,” he continued. “There will be no appeals... There’s nothing else to be done on it.”

Bramlett was joined outside Ratcliff’s courtroom by Assistant District Attorney Kathryn Newman and Pearl Police Department Detective Sgt. Reuben Miles.

One reason for the decision to offer the plea was to prevent Rankin County jurors, law enforcement officials, witnesses, and family members from having to relive what they say was one of the most heinous crimes they worked on.

“This was an innocent seven-week-old baby,” Newman said. “Makaylia Jolley took Khalysie by the ankles, slammed her into the pavement multiple times, and then left her there.”

”Law enforcement, the EMTs, the firefighters, there were innocent people... the apartment owner witnessed it. The victim’s grandmother witnessed it. A truck driver witnessed it. A sweet lady who was going to call on a patient and just happened to be dropping by saw these terrible things,” she added. “I don’t believe you can ever get those images out of your mind.”

The incident occurred on May 12. When officers arrived on the scene a little after 2 o’clock afternoon, Jolley had run into the woods nearby and a second woman was holding the child.

Jolley was eventually taken into custody and Pearl authorities escorted the baby to Children’s of Mississippi in Jackson.

Police discovered she was high during the incident, having used drugs that morning. “When she was initially interviewed by the police department, she said that she accidentally hurt her baby and she did not know why,” Newman said. “She said, ‘I’m sorry, I accidentally did it. I dropped her and then I left her there.’”

“When she was later confronted by Pearl about the fact that her baby had passed away, she cried and chose not to speak with law enforcement anymore.” "

Since her arrest, Jolley has been held at the Rankin County Jail. For the first six months, she was kept in solitary confinement. After that, she was released into the general population but still had a private cell at night.

Newman said that was for Jolley’s protection. Following her sentencing, she is expected to be taken into the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

For Bramlett, he’s glad the case is behind him. He said had Jolley been sentenced to death, the case likely would be continued on appeal after appeal. “The last death penalty case we had in Rankin County was in March of 2003. It was a case I personally tried against a young man named Devin Bennett,” he said. “Very similar to this case. Devin killed his 10-week-old child.”

“Devin is just as alive today as he was 20 years ago when he received the death penalty, and we’re still going through appeals and whatnot,” he said. “The problem I really have... the only problem that I have with the death penalty is that it’s not enforced...

There’s someone on death row who’s been there 40 years. 40 years from now, I’ll be 100 years old if I’m still alive. So, this was a good resolution. It was a good resolution for the state of Mississippi, and Ms. Jolley will die in prison.”
