Child discovery leads Alabama police to 2 bodies, arrest

    By WSFA News Staff

TALLAPOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) - A man is facing multiple charges after a child found walking alone Monday night led investigators to a horrific discovery.

According to Sheriff Jimmy Abbett, Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes, 37, is facing multiple counts of capital murder and first-degree kidnapping.

Abbett said deputies were called just before 8:30 p.m. to County Road 34, just south of Dadeville, after a report of a 12-year-old girl wandering down the road. The child was taken from the area for medical help.

The 12-year-old victim, according to court records, had been tied up and drugged before managing to escape. Abbett called the child a “hero” for what she endured.

The affidavit, Abbett added, allowed the sheriff’s department to arrest Reyes and complete a search of his home, located in the 3500 block of County Road 34.

Inside, deputies found two decomposed bodies, which Abbett said have since been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsies and identification.

Deputies remain at the home processing the scene and are expected to release more details in the coming days, Abbett added.

The U.S. Marshals and the Auburn Police Department took Reyes into custody in Auburn. He was transported to Tallapoosa County, where he awaits a bond hearing.

12-year-old girl escapes captivity, man arrested after bodies found in home, authorities say

By WSFA Staff and Jordan Gartner

TALLAPOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA/Gray News) - An Alabama man is facing multiple charges after a child led investigators to a disturbing discovery at his home.

Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said 37-year-old Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes has been arrested and is facing charges that include capital murder and first-degree kidnapping.

WSFA reports that authorities were called to a county road south of Dadeville, Alabama, after a 12-year-old girl was spotted wandering down County Road 34. Officials said medical was called to assist the girl, who was then taken to an area hospital for treatment.

According to court filings, the girl was tied to bed posts for nearly a week and assaulted while being kept drugged through the use of alcohol.

The court documents revealed that the child escaped after chewing through her restraints before authorities found her walking on the road.

According to Sheriff Abbett, Pascual-Reyes was arrested after deputies completed a search of his home, located in the 3500 block of County Road 34, and found two decomposing bodies.

Abbett said the victims’ remains have since been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for autopsies and identification.

On Tuesday, deputies said they were still at Pascual-Reyes’ home processing the scene.

Authorities said Pascual-Reyes is currently awaiting a bond hearing.

After 12-year-old Alabama kidnapping victim chewed her way free, police found dismembered woman and child, records state

    By Carol Robinson
    AL.com

Two decomposing bodies – including a child - found in the Alabama mobile home of a suspect in the kidnapping of a 12-year-old girl had been dismembered, according to court records made public Wednesday.

Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes, 37, is charged with three counts of capital murder, two counts of corpse abuse and one count of kidnapping.

Pascual-Reyes is charged with capital murder of a child under the age of 14, capital murder during a kidnapping and capital murder of two or more victims.

One of the victims has been identified through court records as Sandra Vazquez Ceja.

The second victim – a male child – was identified only as “AOGV.”

Charging documents against Pascual-Reyes state the little boy was fatally bludgeoned by the suspect, who used his hands and feet. The woman was smothered with a pillow.

Both victims were then “cut into small pieces at the joints in order to hide evidence,’’ according to depositions in the cases. Vazquez was killed in the course of Pascual-Reyes trying to hold her hostage.

Records state the killings happened about 12 a.m. on July 24.

The records do not indicate if the suspect knew his victims or was somehow related to them. The victims are believed to be family members of the 12-year-old girl.

The investigation began Monday morning, about 8:30 a.m., when a passerby spotted the 12-year-old girl walking in the area of 3547 County Road 34 in rural Dadeville, said Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett.

The motorist picked up the child, and immediately called 911.

The girl, according to records, had been tied to a bed post for almost a week and had been given alcohol to keep her in a drugged state. During that time, she was assaulted in the head area.

The girl chewed her way out of her restraints to the point that she broke the braces on her teeth. Deputies observed marks on her wrists indicating she had been restrained.

Abbett, in a press conference Tuesday, said a team of state, local and federal investigators worked over the next 24 hours to arrest Pascual-Reyes.

He was taken into custody in Auburn by Auburn police and U.S. Marshals.

The assisting agencies include the Tallapoosa County District Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the State Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security, the Dadeville Police Department, the Dadeville Fire Department, the Camp Hill Police Department, the Alexander City Police Department, the Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Human Resources and the Child Advocacy Center.

Abbett said it appears Pascual-Reyes had lived at the mobile since February. There were other people at the residence when law enforcement officers arrived, but the sheriff said he could not elaborate.

Court records list two witnesses as “confidential.”

Investigators remained at the suspect’s home on Wednesday.

Abbett praised the 12-year-old for her bravery.

“I would say she’s a hero,’’ Abbett said. “It’s one of those things we won’t get into until later.”

“We gave her medical attention,’’ he said. “She is safe now. We want to keep her that way.”

“It’s horrendous to have a crime scene of this nature,’’ he said.

Sheriff: Tallapoosa Co. murder victims are suspect’s girlfriend, her son

Sandra Vazquez Ceja and her two children had been living with Jose Reyes since February 2022

    By Morgan Hightower
    WBRC News

DADEVILLE, Ala. (WBRC) – The Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman found dead in Jose Reyes’ home as his girlfriend, Sandra Vazquez Ceja.

Sheriff Jimmy Abbett said Ceja’s 14-year-old son, who has not been named, was also murdered.

Sheriff Abbett said Ceja was also the mother of the 12-year-old girl who escaped earlier this week and was found wandering down County Road 34, just south of Dadeville.

Reyes, who Sheriff Abbett said was in the country illegally, is charged with three counts of capital murder, two counts of abuse of a corpse, and first-degree kidnapping.

Sheriff Abbett said Ceja and her two children moved in with Reyes in February 2022. He believes Reyes killed Ceja and her son on or around July 24.

Sheriff Abbett said she was able to free herself by chewing through the restraints, breaking the braces off her teeth in the process. She escaped the house and was found Monday morning wandering down the street.

“She’s a hero,” said Sheriff Abbett.

Sheriff Abbett said the girl is now in the custody of Tallapoosa County DHR and has no life-threatening injuries.

The court hired a translator for Reyes, who is being held without bond. Sheriff Abbett said he was previously deported from the U.S. for illegal entry from Mexico but returned. It’s unclear when he was deported or when he returned.

    1819 News

The pre-trial hearing has been set for the Dadeville man accused of murdering two and kidnapping one.

Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes, who is in the country illegally, was arrested on Aug. 2 after a 12-year-old girl reportedly escaped from his residence, and authorities were alerted.

Upon investigating Reyes' residence, police discovered two dismembered, decomposing bodies.

The hearing is slated for Sept. 9, where the prosecution and defense can lay out preliminary findings and discuss plea arrangements.

According to court documents, a 12-year-old girl was drugged and tied to a bedpost for over a week. At some point, the girl was able to chew her way through her restraints; she was later found by a motorist who called the police.

The first body was identified as Sandra Vasquez Ceja. The second body was only identified in court documents as "AOGV."

More gruesome details emerge in August kidnapping and double capital murder case

    By Cliff Williams
    The Outlook

Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes, an illegal immigrant according to authorities, is accused of killing his girlfriend Sandra Vazquez Ceja and her child, dismembering their bodies and disposing of them in their County Road 34 home while kidnapping Ceja’s other child, a 12-year-old girl.

Reyes, 37, is currently facing three counts of capital murder, two counts of abuse of a corpse and first-degree kidnapping. But testimony at a Wednesday preliminary hearing point towards more charges including sexual abuse.

Tallapoosa County Sheriff Department investigator Christopher Harris said Reyes had disclosed in an interview he wanted to sexually abuse the girl but didn’t. The 12-year-old girl has disclosed to an interviewer with the Tri-County Child Advocacy Center she was touched inappropriately by Reyes.

“She said he stuck his private area into her private area,” Harris said in court.

Harris confirmed Alabama Attorney General prosecutor Damon Lewis’ statement that the incident occured in the moments after the girl heard the last screams of her brother. Harris said the results of a rape kit are not yet complete.

It may not be the first time Reyes has abused the girl. Reyes, Ceja and her children previously lived in Kentucky. Harris said during the investigation of the case in Tallapoosa County alleged previous abuse was discovered.

“He had a grand jury indictemtent in September 2021 for sexual abuse in regards to [the girl],” Harris said.

Reyes was in the Tallapoosa County District Courtroom of Judge Kim Taylor to see if there was enough evidence for the case to proceed. Reyes was wearing a medical mask while his hands were cuffed at his waist. He was also in leg irons. An interpreter translated every word of the proceedings to Reyes who was clad in black and white striped jail garb.

The hearing was held in Alexander City to allow more security. The Tallapoosa County Courthouse Annex in Alexander City has a sally port, a secured entry point, while the courthouse in Dadeville does not.

Lewis questioned Harris about several aspects of the last week of July leading up to when the girl was found by three drivers just in front of the home on Aug. 1.

Harris said a call of a girl wandering down County Road 34 came into the Tallapoosa County 911 call center in Dadeville. An officer from the Camp Hill Police Department responded as did deputies with the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department. Harris was quickly on the scene as well briefly speaking with the girl.

“She looked tired, dazed and confused,” Harris said. “She informed me that she had been held inside the house by her step-dad. She said she had been fed tequila, rice krispy treats and hadn’t heard from or seen her mother and brother for about a week.”

Harris said the girl had chewed through restraints and broke her braces. Harris said he noticed marks on her wrists possibly caused by restraints as well as marks on the girls feet and ankles.

Officers briefly searched the home, noticing a foul odor, a blanket on the wall of the master bedroom, broken restraints, numerous things packed and blood. Harris said a search warrant was granted to search for evidence of kidnapping and evidence of the missing mother and brother.

Harris said he photographed the inside of the residence while taking notice of what was and wasn’t there.

“I noticed big trash bags packed with female items like purses, shoes,” Harris said. “I saw cleaning supplies. In the little boys room there was possible blood in the floor and dents in the wall.”

Harris said the master bedroom had nylon restraints tied to both sides of the headboard. There were also water bottles, rice krispy treat wrappers and used condoms.

Harris said he too noticed a blanket covering what could be described as a closet hiding fresh construction just five or so feet from where the girl described being tied to the bed.

“It looked fresh and there was the smell,” Harris said.

Harris said it appeared sheetrock had been recently installed blocking part of the closet and just behind it was black plastic taped up that he removed.

“I noticed a lot of sheetrock white powder, female shoes, makeup and clothing,” Harris said. “In the back corner was a suitcase.”

A gruesome discovery awaited Harris in the suitcase.

“The upper torso of a body with a mixture of body parts,” Harris said. “It looked like body fluid and maggots.”

Harris said the suitcase was sealed in a bodybag with the help of the coroner and immediately taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery to confirm human remains.

Harris said another search warrant was obtained to dig further into the closet and flooring to find the missing boy and body parts not in the suitcase.

“There was concrete between the floor beams,” Harris said.

Harris said a receipt had been found where Reyes purchased on July 23 ten 50 pound bags of cement. The concrete had been held in place by plastic, insulation and wood slats, but evidence of bodies was there too.

“You could see a head with hair,” Harris said. “There were a lot of pieces, cut up, mutilated.”

It took hours for law enforcement to remove the bodies and the parts, along with concrete and fluid, dropped to a tarp covered ground before being removed in body bags on the night of Aug. 1.

Harris said the torso of the boy had a blade broken off from a jigsaw and an X-ray of his head revealed seven nails from a nail gun. Harris said numerous tools such as saws and nail guns were taken from the home. Harris also said there was a burn pit in the backyard with what appeared to be bones and the hardware from drawers missing from the boy’s room.

Preliminary autopsy reports show blunt force trauma to both deceased victims and the nails to the boy’s head.

Harris said the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences is waiting on DNA results to confirm the boy found in the home is Ceja’s son.

Harris said it appeared Reyes attempted to clean the scene and hide the smell using laundry detergent beads. But a luminol test showed blood all over the home, in the boy’s bedroom, living room, master bathroom and master bedroom.

Leading to the deaths and the girl's escape, Reyes had texted his boss about needing time off to deal with a family issue and needing to go out of state. Those texts started on July 21 and Reyes returned to a construction site in Auburn for work on July 26.

Reyes was arrested on Aug. 1 on an Auburn construction site.

Reyes did talk to law enforcement through an interpreter from the Department of Homeland Security. Harris said Reyes gave a possible motive.

“He said [Ceja] slept with his best friend in his bed,” Harris said. “He suffocated and killed her. He killed [the boy] by kicking him in the chest. He indicated that the kids didn’t really care for him.”

Defense for Dadeville double-murder suspect attempt to block DNA sample

    By Craig Monger
    1819 News

Despite previously admitting to killing his girlfriend and her son, lawyers for double-murder and kidnapping suspect Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes are appealing the state’s request for a compulsory DNA sample.

Pascual-Reyes, who is in the country illegally, was arrested Aug. 2 after authorities were alerted about a 12-year-old girl reportedly escaping from his residence.

According to court documents, a 12-year-old girl was drugged and tied to a bedpost for over a week. At some point, she was able to chew her way through her restraints and was later found by a motorist who called the police.

In the court motion asking for the DNA sample, prosecutors presented verbal testimony from Pascual-Reyes wherein he reportedly confessed to murdering his girlfriend and her son.

Court documents also indicate Pascual-Reyes attempted to cut the bodies into small pieces to conceal his crimes.

Alabama man indicted on 11 counts of capital murder and abuse of corpse

Jose Paulino Pascual Reyes is accused of beating a woman and her young son to death in Tallapoosa County

    By WSFA 12 News Staff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - An Alabama man has been indicted on nearly a dozen charges after allegedly killing a woman and her child, then dismembering and mutilating their bodies.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the 11-count indictment Tuesday against Jose Paulino Pascual Reyes, 37, who is accused of killing Sandra Vazquez Ceja and Omar Gallegos Vazquez in August. The Associated Press identified the victims as Reyes’ live-in girlfriend and her son.

Reyes, of Tallapoosa County, faces nine counts of capital murder and two counts of abuse of a corpse. He was served with the indictment Monday at the Russell County Jail, where he’s being held without bond.

The AG’s office presented evidence to a Tallapoosa County grand jury on Jan. 31, which led to the indictments. Specifically, the indictment charges that Reyes intentionally caused both victims’ deaths during the abduction and sexual assault of a minor. He’s then accused of dismembering and/or mutilating the corpses.

Extremely graphic court documents revealed gruesome details of what investigators say happened to the victims, noting that one of the victims was smothered while the other was beaten to death.

The case was opened after a 12-year-old girl was found walking alone on the night of Aug. 1. She led investigators to the horrific discovery on County Road 34, just south of Dadeville.

Court filings indicate the child had been tied to bed posts for nearly a week, during which time she was assaulted and kept in a drugged state through the use of alcohol. The child later managed to escape, the documents revealed, only after chewing through her restraints.

If convicted, Reyes faces the death penalty or a sentence of life imprisonment without parole for each of the nine charges of capital murder. The punishment for the abuse of corpse charges ranges from one to 10 years, the AG’s office said.

Double murder defendant pleads not guilty by reason of mental defect

    By Lizi Arbogast Gwin
    KPVI News

The defendant charged with the gruesome murders of Sandra Vasquez Ceja and her son Angel Omar Gallegos Vasquez has officially entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes, 37, of Dadeville, had his arraignment at the Tallapoosa County Courthouse on Thursday morning, and has been charged with nine counts of capital murder and two counts of abuse of a corpse. His attorneys, Mark Carlton and Todd Crutchfield, entered the plea on his behalf.

Reyes has been charged with the following: three counts of capital murder during a kidnapping; two counts of murder during a rape; one count of capital murder where two or more persons were murdered; two counts of capital murder of a parent in the presence of a child less than 14 years of age; two counts of capital murder during a rape; and two counts of abuse of a corpse.

The third victim of the crime escaped and due to her age, she is being identified only as N.R.V.C.

The murder scene was found in August 2022 after the juvenile female escaped a mobile home following up to 10 days of captivity.

“[Reyes] restrained with restraints to bed posts for approximately one week, gave the victim alcohol to keep the victim in a drugged state as well as assault her in the head,” court documents state. “Victim had broken her braces from chewing out of her restraints. Deputies observed marks on the victim’s wrists indicative of being restrained.”

The 12-year-old female led authorities to the mobile home where Ceja and Vazquez were found. Court documents suggest Ceja was smothered with a pillow by Reyes

The two charges of abuse of a corpse relate to what court documents state as Reyes trying to hide evidence of the murders by cutting the bodies “into small pieces at the joints.”

The bodies were removed from the floor of the mobile home from beneath as a saw was used from above. The bodies were placed onto tarps and bags and taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.

Reyes is being held in jail until trial with no bond available to him.

Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department investigator Chris Harris said at a preliminary hearing in September this isn’t the first time Reyes was being investigated for crime.

Reyes, Ceja and her children previously lived in Kentucky. Harris said during the investigation of the case in Tallapoosa County, alleged previous abuse was discovered in Kentucky.

“He had a grand jury indictment in September 2021 for sexual abuse in regards to [the girl],” Harris said at the September 2022 preliminary hearing.

State seeking death penalty for illegal alien charged in 2022 double murder, kidnapping

    By Craig Monger
    1819 News

The State of Alabama is seeking the death penalty for an illegal immigrant charged with multiple counts of kidnapping, murder and abusing a corpse in a series of gruesome murders last year.

Jose Paulino Pascual-Reyes, who is in the country illegally, was arrested on Aug. 2, 2022, after authorities were alerted about a 12-year-old girl reportedly escaping from his residence.

According to court documents, a 12-year-old girl was drugged and tied to a bedpost for over a week. At some point, she was able to chew her way through her restraints and was later found by a motorist who called the police.

Upon investigating Pascual-Reyes' residence, police discovered two dismembered, decomposing bodies.

The first body was identified as Sandra Vasquez Ceja. The second body, a minor, was only identified in court documents as "AOGV."

Pascual-Reyes is in the country illegally and had been deported from the U.S. All of the victims had been paroled in the U.S. since 2017, pending an asylum claim. The State of Alabama has been compelled to pay for a foreign language interpreter during this case.

According to court documents obtained by 1819 News, the state has informed Pascual-Reyes it will be seeking the death penalty in his case.

In a court motion requesting a DNA sample to match crime scene DNA, prosecutors presented verbal testimony from Pascual-Reyes wherein he reportedly confessed to murdering his girlfriend and her son.
