Nebraska police make arrest in Laurel fires that left four dead

Nebraska police will hold a press conference in Laurel later this morning

    By Andrew Mark Miller
    Fox News

Law enforcement authorities in Laurel, Nebraska, have announced an arrest after four people were found dead after fires at two different crime scenes.

"NSP has made an arrest in connection with the investigation into homicides in Laurel," the Nebraska State Patrol tweeted on Friday morning. "Details will be provided at a news conference later this morning. Thank you to the public for your vigilance and cooperation with this investigation."

In a Thursday press conference, the Nebraska State Patrol detailed a Thursday morning incident where authorities responded to calls of an explosion and fire at a house in Laurel, Nebraska where one person was found dead.

Shortly after, a second fire was reported at a home three blocks away where three more dead bodies were discovered.

It"would be a stretch" to conclude that there was no connection between the two events, Colonel John A. Bolduc of the Nebraska State Patrol said during the press conference.

Authorities also said that they were searching for a black male suspect who fled the town in a silver sedan, possibly after picking up another passenger.

Fire investigators believe an accelerant was used in both fires and that the suspect or suspects were possibly burned during the blazes.

The state patrol also said Thursday night that "gunfire played a part in the incident at both homes."

A press conference is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. local time.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Suspect arrested in Laurel, airlifted to hospital for burns; victims identified

    By Katie Copple

LAUREL, NEB. — Nebraska State Patrol made an arrest in Laurel, Nebraska early Friday morning, just 24 hours after four people were killed at two separate crime scenes.

In a news conference in Laurel Friday morning, Col. John Bolduc of the Nebraska State Patrol, said one person has been arrested for the murders of four people early Thursday morning.

After finding evidence at the scene of both homes after the fires were put out, NSP investigators determined the 42-year-old Jason Jones, who lived across the street from the first home at 206 Elm Street, was a probable suspect in the homicides. Police made entry into Jones' home at 2:30 a.m. Friday and took him into custody. Jones was found with severe burns on his body, investigators say, and was airlifted to a hospital in Lincoln, Neb. He is described to be in serious condition.

He was arrested on suspicion of homicide, but has not yet been charged.

Nebraska State Patrol have also identified the four people who were killed Thursday.

Michelle Shankles-Ebling was the first victim at 209 Elm St. and 85-year-old Gene Twiford and his wife, 86-year-old Jan Twiford, and their adult daughter, 55-year-old Dana, who perished at 503 Elm Street.

This comes just 24 hours after four people were found dead at two separate homes three blocks apart that were both called in as house fires. In an update late Thursday night, Nebraska State Patrol said gunfire was likely used at both crime scenes, as well as an accelerant.

"We are not categorizing as anything at this point. We have multiple crime scenes we have four dead. We're trying to get to the bottom of it and it's very early in its investigation," said Col. John Bolduc, Nebraska State Patrol Thursday afternoon.

Nebraska murder suspect who is accused of killing four people has bail set at $5 million

NE judge claims 'the defendant is considered an extreme danger to public safety'

    By Associated Press

A judge set bail at $5 million on Monday for a man suspected of killing four people and trying to burn down their homes in the small northeast Nebraska town of Laurel last week.

Court records show Cedar County Judge Douglas Luebe set bond at 10% of $5 million for 42-year-old Jason Jones, meaning he would have to put up $500,000 to be released from jail while he awaits trial.

"The defendant is considered an extreme danger to public safety," the judge wrote in his bond order.

Neither Nebraska State Patrol Col. John Bolduc nor a spokeswoman for CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln, where Jones is being treated for serious burns, would give Jones’ current medical condition on Monday.

Jones is charged with 10 felonies, including four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of arson and four weapons counts. Investigators have said Jones shot and killed his neighbor across the street, 53-year-old Michele Ebeling, early Thursday morning before setting her house on fire, then went three blocks south, broke into another home and fatally shot three people there: 86-year-old Gene Twiford; his wife, 85-year-old Janet Twiford; and their 55-year-old daughter, Dana Twiford.

Jones also set fire to the Twiford home, police said.

During the investigation into the killings, the Nebraska State Patrol said they found a backpack and receipts belonging to Jones showing the purchase of a gas can and other items. A pistol registered to Jones was also found at the Twifords' home, the patrol said.

Authorities have not commented on a possible motive for the killings, but charging documents allege Jones killed the Twifords while trying to carry out a burglary.

Laurel is a small city of about 1,000 that lies about 100 miles northwest of Omaha.

Investigators seize phone of Laurel murder suspect's wife

    By Molly Ashford
    Omaha World-Herald

Search warrants executed in Cedar County reveal new information regarding a quadruple-homicide investigation in the small Nebraska town of Laurel.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 4, four Laurel residents were shot to death before their homes were set on fire: Michele Ebeling, 57, in one home, and Gene Twiford, 85, Janet Twiford, 85, and Dana Twiford, 55, in another.

Jason Jones, a 42-year-old Laurel resident, was charged Aug. 5 with first-degree murder, arson and use of a firearm to commit a felony in connection with the killings.

Authorities have applied for and executed a total of eight search warrants in the case: Five seeking physical evidence from the two crime scenes and from Jones’ home and vehicle, and three seeking digital evidence from various devices.

In the most recent warrant application filed Aug. 10, police obtained a warrant to search the phone of Carrie Jones, Jason Jones’ wife. The affidavit reveals that neighbors claim to have seen Carrie Jones at Ebeling’s home shortly after an explosion was reported.

According to the affidavit, investigators spoke to neighbors of Ebeling on Aug. 5. A neighbor said that he was outside smoking a cigarette when he heard the explosion at Ebeling’s home and ran to render aid.

Upon arriving, according to the affidavit, the neighbor saw Carrie Jones at the west door of Ebeling’s home. The neighbor ran to his home to get more help, and Carrie Jones had gone back to her home by the time he returned.

According to the affidavit, investigators are seeking any GPS or other location data that could corroborate Carrie Jones’ presence at Ebeling’s home and show her location at the time the Twiford family was killed. They will also look through texts, social media, photographs and internet history.

Authorities searched the Jones home twice: Once Aug. 5 and again Aug. 11. During the first search, two knives, four firearms and multiple boxes of ammunition were seized from the home. Five iPhones, two Apple watches, a MacBook and an iPad were also seized. A subsequent warrant was filed to search the contents of the phones and watches.

The Aug. 11 warrant was executed specifically to search for burned clothing and shoes matching footwear impressions collected from the Twiford home — neither of which were found in the first search. According to the affidavit, Carrie Jones had previously told investigators that she had to peel off what was left of Jason Jones’ clothing from his body when he returned home. No burnt clothing was noted on the evidence list, but two pairs of shoes were seized in the second search.

Jason Jones was severely burned and was airlifted to CHI St. Elizabeth in Lincoln after his arrest. According to the Nebraska State Patrol, he remains in custody at the hospital and is being watched by private security organized by Cedar County.

Suspect in quadruple homicide case receives no bond at request of prosecution

    By Alex McLoon
    KETV News

HARTINGTON, Neb. — The suspect in a quadruple homicide case from August received no bond at the request of the prosecution from a Cedar County judge on Wednesday.

Jason Jones, 42, faces multiple counts of homicide, use of a weapon and arson charges that carry a maximum penalty of death or life in prison.

A total of four people were found dead early on Aug. 4 at two separate homes in Laurel. Jones was taken into custody in Laurel on Aug. 5.

State prosecutors said there's evidence that Jones is a danger to himself and the public, and asked the Cedar County judge to set no bond. The prosecutor also said the state is concerned by Jones’ ability to flee the jurisdiction.

The victim at the first residence, located in the 200 block of Elm Street, was identified as 53-year-old Michele Ebeling, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

The three victims at the second residence, located in the 500 block of Elm Street, were identified as 86-year-old Gene Twiford, 85-year-old Janet Twiford, and 55-year-old Dana Twiford.

Investigators said Jones set fire to both homes.

After his arrest, Jones was being treated for severe burns and was released from a Lincoln hospital on Oct. 26.

Jones's next hearing is set for Dec. 7 at 1:30 p.m.

Quadruple homicide suspect to be tried in district court after waiving preliminary hearing

    By Austin Svehla
    KPVI News

The 42-year-old man accused of fatally shooting four people in Laurel on the morning of Aug. 4 and setting the victims’ homes on fire had his case bound over to Cedar County District Court on Tuesday.

On Monday, attorneys for Jason Jones filed a request for their client to waive his preliminary hearing, which had been scheduled for Dec. 7 in Cedar County Court. All defendants charged with felonies in Nebraska have the right to such a hearing in county court to determine if probable cause exists that they committed the crimes for which they are charged.

Jones, who is charged with four counts each of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony and two counts of first-degree arson, is scheduled to be arraigned by District Judge Bryan Meismer on Monday, Jan. 23.

County Judge Doug Luebe signed an order on Tuesday allowing Jones to waive his preliminary hearing, as well as a further appearance in county court.

Jones is accused in the slayings of Gene Twiford, 86, Janet Twiford, 85, Dana Twiford, 55, and Michele Ebeling, 53.

On Aug. 4, according to an affidavit, a man called 911 about 3:30 a.m. after he reported hearing an explosion that occurred at 209 Elm St. Laurel Fire and EMS arrived at the home and located a woman, identified as Ebeling, lying inside the back door of the residence. Ebeling was pronounced dead on the scene after lifesaving attempts were unsuccessful.

A fire also appeared to have occurred inside the residence after burn marks were observed on the floor, walls and furniture, according to the affidavit. The smell of smoke and gasoline also was present at the time.

Shortly after the first incident was reported, a 911 call was made regarding smoke coming from a residence located at 503 Elm St.

While discovering soot damage consistent with a fire, first responders also found three people — identified as the Twifords — inside the residence, and all appeared to have suffered from gunshot wounds. The Twifords were pronounced dead at the scene.

After finding evidence believed to link Jones to the homicides, police obtained a warrant for his arrest early on Aug. 5. Jones, who was located in the bedroom of his home, was taken into custody and airlifted shortly thereafter to CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln with severe burn injuries.

Jones was treated at the Lincoln hospital for about 12 weeks before being transported to the Nebraska Department of Corrections’ Reception and Treatment Center in Lincoln, where he continues to receive medical care. Jones is being held there without bail.

If he’s convicted of the murder charges, Jones could face the death penalty.

Protection orders against wife of Laurel murder suspect will remain in effect

    By KTIV News

HARTINGTON, Neb. (KTIV) - Three protection orders placed against the wife of a suspect accused of murdering four people in Laurel, Nebraska will stay in effect for the time being.

According to court documents, a judge on Thursday, Dec. 1, declared the protection orders against Carrie Jones will remain in effect for one year from their original issue date. Carrie is married to Jason Jones, who is charged with four counts of murder for his alleged involvement in the deaths of 53-year-old Michele Ebeling, 86-year-old Gene Twiford, 85-year-old Janet Twiford and 55-year-old Dana Twiford.

The protection orders are for Brian Welch, who was the fiance of Michele Ebeling, and for Alan and Sherry Pallas, who live on the same street as Carrie.

Welch claims he filed the protection order after Carrie approached him while cleaning out his fiance’s house and threatened to kill him. While Alan and Sherry Pallas claim Carrie has threatened them on multiple occasions following the deaths in Laurel. All three filed their harassment protection orders in November, so they will be in effect until November 2023.

The hearing was held Dec. 1 because Carrie requested one after receiving the protection orders. Under Nebraska law, a law enforcement officer may arrest, with or without a warrant, someone who has committed a violation of the issued protection order.

Jason Jones is expected to be in court for his arraignment on Jan. 23, 2023.

Police arrest wife of man accused of killing 4 in Nebraska

    By Associated Press

LAUREL, Neb. (AP) — Police on Friday arrested the wife of a man charged with killing four people last August in a small northeast Nebraska town.

The Nebraska State Patrol said investigators charged Carrie Jones with first-degree homicide in connection with the Aug. 4 deaths in Laurel, Nebraska. The arrest came more than four months after police arrested Jason Jones on murder charges.

Jason Jones is accused of killing Gene Twiford, 86; his wife, Janet Twiford, 85; and their daughter, Dana Twiford, 55. Police allege he then killed a neighbor, Michele Eberling, 53. Fires were also started at the victims’ homes after their deaths, police said.

He was suffering from burns when he was arrested and was treated at a hospital for more than two months. His arraignment is set for Jan. 23.

On Friday, the state patrol said in a statement that an examination of phones owned by Jason and Carrie Jones indicated that Carrie Jones “played a role prior to the murders.”

She was arrested at her home and taken to the Antelope County Jail. Beside the homicide charge, she was charged with tampering with physical evidence and accessory to a felony.

It wasn’t immediately clear if she has an attorney who could speak on her behalf.

State seeking death penalty against man charged in Laurel slayings

    By Nick Hytrek
    Sioux City Journal

HARTINGTON, Neb. — Prosecutors have filed notice they plan to seek a death sentence for the man charged with killing four people in Laurel, Nebraska.

Assistant Nebraska Attorney General Corey O'Brien on Tuesday filed an information containing four counts each of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony and two counts of first-degree arson against Jason Jones.

On each of the murder charges, O'Brien included a notice of aggravators, or statutorily defined aggravating circumstances, as required by Nebraska law in cases in which the death penalty is sought. The aggravating circumstances O'Brien will seek to prove at trial are that Jones of committed a homicide at the same time he committed other homicides. On two of the murder charges, Jones is accused of committing a homicide to conceal the commission of a crime of burglary or murder, or to conceal his identity.

Jones, 42, of Laurel, is charged with the Aug. 4 shooting deaths of Michele Ebeling, 53, in her home and Gene Twiford, 86, his wife, Janet Twiford, 85, and their daughter Dana Twiford, 55, in another home. He is accused of setting both houses on fire.

He's scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Cedar County District Court, but his attorney, Todd Lancaster, on Wednesday filed a waiver of appearance in which he advised the court Jones would not be entering a plea at that time because he plans to file a motion to quash sections of Nebraska's death penalty statute as unconstitutional.

Jones is being held without bond at the Nebraska Department of Corrections Reception and Treatment Center in Lincoln, where he continues to receive treatment for burns received in the incidents.

If found guilty of first-degree murder at trial, a jury or three-judge panel would consider the aggravating circumstances filed with the charges. If those circumstances are found to exist, the case would advance to a three-judge panel to determine if Jones would receive a death sentence. If found guilty of first-degree murder but not given a death sentence, Jones would be subject to a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Authorities responded to a reported explosion in the early morning hours of Aug. 4 at 209 Elm St., where they found Ebeling's body with two gunshot wounds. A second fire at the Twiford home at 503 Elm St. is believed to have started at about the same time, and responders found the bodies of the three family members, all with gunshot wounds.

Jones' wife, Carrie Jones, was arrested in December and charged with first-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence and being an accessory to a felony. She is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Carrie Jones, 43, is accused of killing Gene Twiford, concealing or removing physical evidence and hiding her husband in an effort to prevent his arrest. Jason Jones, who lived with his wife across the street from Ebeling, was arrested without incident at their home about 24 hours after the bodies were discovered and airlifted to a Lincoln hospital for treatment of serious burns over a large portion of his body.

Investigators believe the Twifords were killed first, then Ebeling a short time later. According to court documents, authorities found receipts Jones had for gas at Ebeling's home and a Ruger pistol traced to Jones at the Twiford residence.

Search warrant affidavits filed in her husband’s case show Carrie Jones was seen at Ebeling’s home shortly after the explosion was reported, and she told police during an interview she had been there early that morning.
