Fourth body found as drought-stricken Lake Mead near Las Vegas continues to dry up

Three other sets of human remains have been found at the lake since May as water levels drop due to severe drought.

The latest skeletal remains were discovered at the lake's Swim Beach on Saturday morning, National Park Service officials said.

Forensic pathologists are now working to establish the cause of death, while investigators review records of missing people.

On May 1, a barrel containing human remains was found near Hemenway Harbor at the lake.

Police believe the remains were those of a man who died from a gunshot wound and was dumped in the lake from the mid-1970s to early 1980s.

Less than a week later, more skeletal remains were found at Calville Bay.

And most recently, partial human remains were found in the Boulder Beach area on July 25.

Police have previously suggested that more remains could be discovered as more of Lake Mead's shoreline is exposed.

The water level has dropped more than 52 metres since the reservoir was last deemed full in 1983.

The discoveries have prompted speculation about long-unsolved missing persons and murder cases dating back decades, with possible links to organised crime.

Las Vegas, some 50 kilometres from Lake Mead, was a renowned hotbed of mafia activity during the 1970s and 80s.

The lake's drying out comes as a vast majority of scientists say the world is warming, mainly because of rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Scientists say the US west, including the Colorado River basin, has become warmer and drier over the last 30 years.

Lake Mead is a goldmine for human remains.
