Youit De Witt Jones Charged in 2022 AL Murder of Nathan Gemeinhart

Nathan Gemeinhart, missing father of 4, IDd as man found dead in burning abandoned Birmingham house; suspect charged with capital murder

Remains found in a burning abandoned house in west Birmingham have now officially been confirmed as a Jefferson County husband and father of four reported missing a day earlier.

Birmingham police identified the remains as 42-year-old Nathan Gemeinhart.

His identity was confirmed through DNA testing, and a memorial service for Gemeinhart is being planned for this weekend.

The man police had sought in connection with the homicide - 35-year-old Youit De Witt Jones - is now charged with capital murder in Gemeinharts slaying. The warrant against Jones was issued by the Jefferson County District Attorneys Office on Monday.

Authorities have not released a motive in the slaying, but the charge is capital because it involved a kidnapping and arson.

The Gemeinhart family on Wednesday released this statement:

We are heartbroken by the loss of our Nathan. He was good, kind, and faithful. He was funny. He listened well. He worked hard. He never met a stranger and never, ever turned down a plate of tex-mex. Nathan was a gifted musician who enjoyed teaching his children the names of instruments and blues musicians. He loved Jesus.

He absolutely adored being a daddy. He delighted in his family and friends. His love for his wife was patient, tender, and unending. We miss him terribly, and will grieve his absence the rest of our days.

The manner of his death is gut wrenching, and so we look with an achy hope to the Christian Scriptures for comfort. We believe we will see Nathan again, where God will wipe away our every tear, and where death is no more.

The homicide investigation began Aug. 9 when Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded at 2:45 a.m. to the 1300 block of Eufaula Avenue on a report of a house fire.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find the abandoned house in flames.

Once they extinguished the blaze, they found a badly burned body inside. Police said evidence showed that the person was a victim of homicide.

Less than one block away, authorities found Gemeinharts 2007 Toyota Corolla parked in front of a house on Pike Road.

Gemeinhart had left his southern Jefferson County home about 7:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, and was going to check on some properties over on the west side of the county. He worked in property management.

He was supposed to meet his wife at 11:30 a.m. for his daughters Meet the Teacher school event, but never showed up.

Friends and family immediately launched a search for Gemeinhart, knowing it was unlike him to be out of touch with them, and to miss the school event for his kindergartners, which were the oldest of his four children.

Family reported that Gemeinharts had been spotted on surveillance cameras at 8:40 a.m. that Monday on Aaron Aranov Drive in Fairfield.

There was phone data at 8:49 a.m. and then nothing after that time.

A family friend offered a $100,000 reward for information on his whereabouts as fliers were widely circulated on social media.

Police had remained publicly tight-lipped on any possible connection between the body and Gemeinharts disappearance, but it was widely speculated that the two cases would become one, which they now are.

Later that Tuesday night, a GoFundMe was launched for Gemeinhart which stated, As we prepare to celebrate Nathans Life.

In the days that followed, the GoFundMe, started by Red Mountain Church where Gemeinharts wife, Jessica, is an administrator and director of the childrens ministry, raised more than $147,000.

A vigil was held the same night for Gemeinhart at the church, which is in the heart of Birminghams Lakeview District.

Within hours of the discovery of Gemeinharts body and car, Birminghams SWAT team descended on a house next to where the car was found.

Detectives and evidence technicians conducted an extensive search but have not said what they found.

Police announced they were searching for Jones in connection with the homicide, labeling Jones armed and dangerous.

Jones had been staying in the house that was searched by the SWAT team and detectives.

Only a small alley separates Jones house from the abandoned house where the body was found.

Jones was captured the following day when he was arrested in a carjacking attempt in Oklahoma, where he remains held.

Birmingham detectives traveled to Ardmore, Okla. Following Jones arrest.

With warrants now issued, authorities likely will begin the extradition process.

Court records show Jones has lengthy history of arrests, mostly for property crimes, drug charge and traffic violations.

In 2019, he pleaded guilty to second-degree arson and received a 10-year suspended sentence.

Most recently, Jones was arrested Aug. 6 in Autauga County after Alabama State Troopers said he was driving 114 mph on I-65 southbound and almost hit a state trooper. He was charged with attempting to elude, reckless endangerment and reckless driving.

In that case, Jones was a dark brown 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which is the initial vehicle Birmingham police listed in the lookout bulletin for him but later said was recovered in a separate incident.

Jones was released from the Autauga County Jail the following day, Sunday, Aug. 7, on his own recognizance.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

Suspect in kidnapping and killing of father of 4 Nathan Gemeinhart extradited to Alabama

    By Carol Robinson

The man charged with capital murder in the killing of a Jefferson County father is back in Alabama.

Youit Jones, 35, is charged in the slaying of 42-year-old Nathan Gemeinhart.

Jefferson County sheriffs deputies extradited Jones to Alabama from Oklahoma. He was booked into the jail just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday and remains held without bond.

Jones was captured following a carjacking attempt in Oklahoma. Court records obtained by AL.com showed Jones tried to rob a woman of her vehicle and was held down by McDonalds employees in the restaurant parking lot until police could arrive.

The Oklahoma charges against Jones were dismissed earlier this month in deference to the more serious alleged crimes in Alabama.

Authorities have not released a motive in Gemeinharts slaying, but the charge is capital because it involved kidnapping and arson.

Suspect indicted in kidnapping and killing of father of 4 Nathan Gemeinhart

The man charged with capital murder in the killing of a Jefferson County husband and father has now been indicted in the case.

Youit Jones, 35, is charged in the slaying of 42-year-old Nathan Gemeinhart.

A preliminary hearing was set for this week in which the evidence against Jones would have been presented, but the case was put on the grand jury instead. The grand jury in late November issued indictments again Jones for capital murder and second-degree arson, court records show.

A trial date has not yet been set.

Authorities have not released a motive in Gemeinharts slaying, but the charge is capital because it involved kidnapping and arson. Police have said Jones and Gemeinhart did not know each other.
