Christopher Angel Redondo Sentenced to Life in Prison in 2010 AZ Murder of Lt. Eric Shuhandler

Two men indicted in Gilbert officer's killing

An indictment has been handed up against two suspects in the shooting death of a Gilbert police lieutenant, authorities announced Saturday.

Christopher Angel Redondo, 35, of Globe, is accused of fatally shooting Lt. Eric Shuhandler, 42, in the head during a traffic stop Jan. 28. Redondo is now charged with first-degree murder, four counts of drive-by shooting and 19 counts of aggravated assault.

Daimen Irizarry, 30, of Gilbert, was driving their vehicle, and is charged with first-degree murder, four counts of drive-by shooting, and 19 counts of aggravated assault.

"We consider an attack on a police officer as an attack on the community and these charges reflect that," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in a news release.

Police said that after Shuhandler was shot in the head, Redondo and Irizarry led officers on a wild 50-mile chase from Mesa to the mining community of Superior, where they were wounded in a gun battle with officers.

Court documents state that after Redondo was released in June 2008 from a four-year term in an Arizona prison for aggravated assault and related charges, he became more and more angry and distrustful of police, and showed violent tendencies, particularly to animals.

Shuhandler is survived by his ex-wife, daughters, ages 10 and 12, his parents and a sister.

Arizona seeks death penalty in Redondo murder case

PHOENIX — In the case State of Arizona vs. Christopher A. Redondo, the prosecution has filed a notice seeking the death penalty should the trial result in a guilty verdict.

Redondo is accused of shooting and killing Lt. Eric Shuhandler of the Gilbert Police Department on Jan. 28, 2010.

On Feb. 10, a grand jury handed up a 25-count indictment against Redondo, including one count of first degree murder, 19 counts of aggravated assault, and four counts of drive by shooting.

The Superior Court of Arizona, which will try the case, has ordered that Redondo undergo intelligence quotient, competency and sanity prescreening evaluations to determine whether the defendant was sane at the time of the allegedly committed crime for which he will stand trial.

Procedures to select a jury have been addressed by the court, and the selection process will be initiated in the coming weeks.

Arizona Rules of Criminal Procedure require capital cases to be resolved within 18 months from arraignment, which occurred on Feb. 2, 2010. A trial date has been set for June 27, 2011 in the Superior Court of Arizona in Phoenix.

Life term for man in 2009 murder

Defendant awaits trial in 2010 death of officer

The man accused of slaying a Gilbert police officer will never taste freedom, even though his death-penalty trial in the slaying is months away.

Christopher Redondo, 37, pleaded guilty in Gila County Superior Court to first-degree murder in an unrelated death and was sentenced by Judge Peter Cahill to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The Miami slaying of Ernie Singh, 40, occurred on June 24, 2009, seven months before Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler was gunned down during a traffic stop on Jan. 28, 2010.

Singh and Shuhandler both were shot in the face. Shuhandler's slaying ignited a wild 50-mile high-speed chase that ended in a shootout near Superior.

Deputy Maricopa County Attorney Juan Martinez is seeking a death sentence for Redondo in a trial slated to start Sept. 10.

Jerry Cobb, a spokesman for the County Attorney's Office, said Martinez could potentially use Redondo's Gila County conviction to blunt arguments by defense attorneys to spare Redondo from execution.

He said the March 2 conviction in Globe came too late to list it as a reason for seeking the death penalty. Prosecutors have 60 days after a defendant's arraignment to file a notice to seek the death penalty.

Gila County Attorney Daisy Flores said it is unusual for a defendant to plead guilty to first-degree murder with a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

"It's really good for Ernie's family. It's the best we could have hoped for," she said.

Flores said that no matter what happens in Redondo's upcoming murder trial in Phoenix, Redondo will spend the rest of his life in prison because of his conviction in Singh's murder.

Singh was shot to death through a screen door at his home in Miami. Flores said Gila County prosecutors agreed not to pursue relatively minor charges against Redondo's wife, Theresa, and her daughter from another relationship in return for the plea deal.

Redondo was not charged in Singh's slaying until police served a search warrant at the home of his father, Angel Redondo, after Shuhandler's murder, Flores said.

After police found drugs inside the elder Redondo's home, he led them to a shotgun he buried in a mine shaft on his property, she said. Prosecutors agreed not to prosecute Angel Redondo in exchange for his testimony against his son.

"He was trying to cut a deal for himself," Flores said. "Without that (shotgun), it was impossible to connect Chris to the homicide."

Delays in the Death Penalty Trial for Christopher Redondo in the Shooting Death of Gilbert Police Lt. Eric Shuhandler

The long awaited Maricopa County Death Penalty trial for Christopher Redondo has been delayed once again as Redondo has a new defense attorney and because the prosecutor in the case has been prosecuting the Jodie Arias case. Maricopa County Prosecutor Juan Martinez appears to be running the Jodie Arias defense through the ringer. It will be interesting to see if he is as determined in the Redondo trial.

Christopher Redondo was charged in the murder of Gilbert Police Lt. Eric Shuhandler. The case stems from a 10:30 p.m. traffic stop, when Shuhandler pulled over Damien Irizarry, of Gilbert, who was driving Redondo’s father’s work truck. Shuhandler pulled them over for an obstructed license plate. Minutes later, as Shuhandler returned to the pickup, Redondo pulled a gun and shot him in the head, police reports state. Irizarry and Redondo then led several officers on a chase eastbound on U.S. 60. During the chase, police reports state Redondo fired at officers and disabled 12 police cars by hurling tools and equipment from the bed of the pickup. The chase ended when the pickup ran out of gas at Top of the World.

Police say Redondo again opened fire as he exited the truck. Police returned fire as Irizarry and Redondo took cover and were struck in the legs and feet.

Christopher Redondo, 37, pleaded guilty in Gila County Superior Court to first-degree murder in and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the Miami slaying of Ernie Singh, 40, occurring on June 24, 2009, seven months before Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler was gunned down during a traffic stop on Jan. 28, 2010.

Just last year Christopher Redondo, 37, pleaded guilty in Gila County Superior Court to first-degree murder and was sentenced l to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the Miami slaying of Ernie Singh, 40, occurred on June 24, 2009, seven months before Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler was gunned down during a traffic stop on Jan. 28, 2010.

Many believe, including Singh’s family, that if former Gila County Attorney Daisy Flores had done her job and prosecuted Redondo for his many violent crimes in the past, including but not limited to the murder of Ernie Singh, Gilbert Police Lt. Eric Shuhandler would be alive today. With the uncertainty of the ongoing Jodie Arias trial it is unclear when Christopher Redondo’s Death Penalty Trial will begin, but we will let you know as soon as we get that information.

Wife of Convicted Murderer, Christopher Redondo, Arrested!

The wife of convicted murderer Christopher Redondo, Theresa Redondo was arrest Wednesday on charges of Hindering an Investigation, after Globe Police Officers were dispatched to an area on 3rd and Mesquite in reference to found property. According to Globe Police logs: During the course of the investigation, officers reported, they located a quad thought to be involved with the property found. An officer who had observed the rider, was able to determine his identity as Ruben Mageno and it was know that he has ties to that residence. It was also known Mageno had warrants outstanding for his arrest. The homeowner denied Mageno being at the residence, but refused officers entry into the home. Based on information known, officers maintained a perimeter on the home and began to draft a search warrant to search for Mageno in the residence. Prior to obtaining the warrant, the homeowner claimed they were unaware that Mageno was inside, but realized after officers left, Mageno was asleep in the a bedroom. After the officers returned, they were allowed in to contact Mageno. Mageno was inside of the residence and taken into custody for his warrants. Theresa Redondo was also arrested for hindering the investigation.

Back in March of 2012, KQSS reported that Christopher Redondo pleaded guilty in the Gila County Superior Court before Judge Peter Cahill, on First Degree Murder charges for the June 24, 2009 murder of Miami Resident Ernie Singh (sing).

Singh died from a single gunshot to the face as he slept in his Miami, home. Police say Redondo was jealous of a relationship Singh’s brother had with Redondo’s wife, Theresa Redondo.

It was reported that Redondo shot Singh through the window of his Miami home.

As a part of Chris Redondo’s plea agreement, the state dropped a number of charges against his wife, Theresa Redondo, who was present at the hearing. Redondo was sentenced to Natural Life in Prison.

Redondo will soon be tried in a Maricopa County Court for the January 28, 2010 murder of Gilbert Police Lieutenant, Eric Shuhandler, who was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle occupied by Redondo and his accomplice Damien Irizzary. Redondo allegedly shot Lieutenant Shuhandler in the face during that traffic stop. His next court appearance in Maricopa County is on March 6 for a Status Conference. The state is seeking the death penalty in that case. It’s been reported that the Maricopa County Prosecutor who prosecuted the Jodie Arias trial, Juan Martinez, will be prosecuting Christopher Redondo’s death penalty trial.

Report details chase, Gilbert officer's slaying

Hours after a Gilbert police lieutenant was fatally shot during a traffic stop, Daimen Irizarry's thoughts turned to the slain man's family. Irizarry's childhood friend stands accused of firing the shot.

"I hope the officer didn't have no little kids like I do, then at least I'll be able to sleep," Irizarry is quoted as saying in the 5,000-page police report released by the Arizona Department of Public Safety into the slaying of Lt. Eric Shuhandler around 11 p.m. Jan. 28 and a subsequent police pursuit of the gunman.

"Unfortunately, he did," a Gilbert detective responded, referring to Shuhandler's two daughters, then 12 and 10.

Irizarry, of Gilbert, sobbed from the hospital bed where he was recovering from gunshot wounds to both ankles and his calf. He suffered the wounds in a shootout with police after a 50-mile chase on U.S. 60 that ended near Globe, according to the report. Also wounded was Irizarry's friend Christopher Redondo, 35, of Globe, whose ankle was nearly severed in the shootout. He is accused of killing Shuhandler.

The newly released police documents show that 12 police officers - 10 from Mesa, one Maricopa County sheriff's deputy and one Pinal County sheriff's deputy - fired at least 58 shots from handguns, shotguns and assault rifles at Irizarry and Redondo during the confrontation.

One officer who opened fire told DPS investigators that officers should have advanced on Redondo and Irizarry, who had taken cover against their getaway vehicle, and "finish the job," the report states.

"Trying to talk to somebody that was shooting at us was pointless," the Mesa police officer stated. "It's a lethal-force situation, and you face it with lethal force."

The report offers more detail into the chase that ensued after Shuhandler was shot in the face during a traffic stop at Baseline Road and Val Vista Drive. Redondo refused to speak with investigators and requested a lawyer, but Irizarry did not.

"I'm a God-fearing man," Irizarry told investigators. "I know there's things that I do with my life as far as like the drug . . . but to take somebody's life? No, not me."

Irizarry had been driving a Ford work truck owned by Redondo's father about 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 28 when Shuhandler pulled it over for an obstructed license plate, the report states. Irizarry said he saw Shuhandler returning to the pickup in the driver's side-view mirror then suddenly heard a "pop" as the officer approached Redondo's passenger window.

"If I would have known that's what happened, I would have probably just jumped out then and called 911 for help," Irizarry said. However, he told police, Redondo ordered him to drive and to call Redondo's father to meet them.

Irizarry's attorney Chad Shell argues in court documents that Irizarry refused to pull over because he was under "duress."

"He was an unfortunate hostage of the circumstances he innocently found himself in," Shell wrote. "He is a VICTIM!"

Police say Redondo fired on pursuing officers and climbed into the back of the pickup, then began hurling various tools at pursuing police cars along U.S. 60, disabling 13 vehicles before the getaway vehicle ran out of gas, the report states.

Irizarry told investigators Redondo said they should "get out and just start walking. They're not going to do nothing as long as we're not doing nothing." However, police said Redondo exited the vehicle and opened fire.

"As soon as I got towards the front (of the pickup), it was just gunshot after gunshot," Irizarry said, recalling the shootout with police. "It was more gunshots than I've ever heard in my life."

While Redondo and Irizarry used their pickup for cover, police lay on the ground and took aim at their feet and legs.

"I had to stop him," one officer who opened fire told investigators. "(Redondo) was going to kill somebody. I had to do something to, to, to keep that from happening."

Redondo faces the death penalty if convicted on charges of first-degree murder, four counts of drive-by shooting and 19 counts of aggravated assault. Irizarry faces four counts of drive-by shooting, nine counts of aggravated assault and unlawful flight from law enforcement.

Both have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Redondo was also recently indicted in the unrelated murder of Miami resident Ernie Singh, who was shot in the face in June 2009.

Alleged Accomplice Goes on Trial in Officer's Death

A trial has begun in the case involving a Gilbert Police officer who was shot and killed, just before a high-speed chase back in January that spanned two Arizona counties.

Daimen Irizarry, one of the men accused of taking part in the crime spree and shootout, is facing murder charges in the death of Lieutenant Eric Shuhandler back in January.

Police say Irizarry was in the truck with Christopher Redondo when they were pulled over for a traffic stop in Gilbert. Police say Redondo fired at Shuhandler, killing him, and then the pair fled the scene.

Officers engaged in a high-speed pursuit for the next 50 miles from Gilbert to Globe. The men tried to outrun police, tossing a firearm and an air compressor out of the back of the truck.

But Irizarry's attorney says his client should be facing lesser charges than Redondo, Shuhandler's alleged killer. Their arguments began Wednesday in court.

Prosecutors say Daimen Irizarry had two choices -- help the Gilbert officer who had just been shot, or help his accomplice get away. They say he chose to flee.

In court Wednesday, casually rocking in his chair, at times smirking, Irizarry listened to prosecutors give their opening arguments in the case against him.

"Immediately he took off away from the scene so the police could not apprehend his friend," said criminal prosecutor Juan Martinez. "He's guilty as a helper of four counts of drive by shooting."

Irizarry is accused of being the getaway driver for Redondo. Police say Redondo shot Lt. Shuhandler, but Irizarry drove Redondo away and led officers on a 50-mile chase.

Prosecutors say Irizarry drove steadily as Redondo climbed into the bed of the truck, fired at officers and threw power tools at them.

In court, Mesa Police Officers recounted the heartbreaking scene where they found Lt. Shuhandler on the ground.

"He was lying down, his head was facing to the south, and it looked like his head had been blown off."

But defense attorneys say Irizarry only drove away because he feared for his life. Irizarry's attorney Charles Shell says he had no idea Redondo had two guns on him until after the shooting.

"He will testify he was scared, he was in a panic, he didn't have any other options," says Shell.

Irizarry was charged with 13 counts including aggravated assault, drive by shooting and unlawful flight. Redondo was charged with 22 counts including 1st degree murder, aggravated assault and drive by shooting.

Redondo spent weeks in the hospital recovering from several gunshot wounds -- he could receive the death penalty.

Irizarry found guilty on all charges

PHOENIX — Daimen Irizarry was found guilty on all charges by a jury in Maricopa Superior court on Thursday, July 22, 2010. Irizarry was on trial for his participation in the shooting death of Gilbert Police Lt. Eric Shuhandler and the 50-mile police chase that ensued between Mesa and Superior. Irizarry drove the get-away truck during the high speed chase on Jan, 28, 2010 after the passenger, Christopher Redondo of Globe, allegedly shot and killed Lt. Shuhandler during a routine traffic stop.

Irizarry has been found guilty on eight counts of aggravated assault, four counts of drive-by shooting, and one count of unlawful flight from law enforcement. His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 27, 2010.

Irizarry’s alleged accomplice, Christopher Redondo, is charged with first degree murder of Lt Shuhandler with a single shot to the facial area.

More trial delays for defendant in Gilbert officer death

The 5-year-old murder of a Gilbert police officer is no closer to resolution after a Maricopa County Superior Court judge ordered another competency examination for the man accused of killing the officer.

Superior Court Judge Nicole Brickner said the second doctor who examined Christopher Redondo was not able to come to an opinion on whether the 40-year-old was competent to stand a death-penalty trial.

Redondo is accused of shooting Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler on Jan. 28, 2010, following a traffic stop near Val Vista Drive and Baseline Road.

The shooting sparked a chaotic 50-mile chase that ended in a shootout after Redondo's pickup ran out of gas and police say he began firing at them.

Redondo previously pleaded guilty to a different murder -- that of 40-year-old Ernie Singh in Miami in 2009 -- and was sentenced to life in prison.

Deputy Maricopa County Attorney Juan Martinez is seeking the death sentence in Shuhandler's murder.

Redondo was found competent in July 2011, but his defense attorneys requested a second mental-health review.

Redondo's getaway driver, Daimen Irizarry, was sentenced following a 2010 trial to 107 years in prison for his role in the crimes.

    Redondo arraigned on new charges

On Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, Christopher Redondo of Globe was transfered by Maricopa County sheriff’s agents to Globe to appear in Gila County Superior Court, Div. I in front of Judge Peter Cahill for an arraignment involving six counts of misconduct involving weapons. The charges are in relation to a search carried out by Globe Police Department at his residence in Globe early last year. Redondo has entered into a not guilty plea for the charges.

Redondo is currently being held in Maricopa County Jail on 19 charges involving the alleged shooting-death of Gilbert police officer, Lt. Eric Shuhandler, in January of 2010. Should Redondo be found guilty of the charges, he faces the death penalty. Redondo’s trial in the Superior Court of Arizona, Maricopa County, is set to begin on June 27, 2011. At a case management conference on Nov. 11, 2010, involving the aforesaid charges, Redondo was not present due to having allegedly disassembled his wheelchair and threatened deputies with a part or parts of the wheelchair.

On Dec. 20, 2010, the presiding judge Janet E. Barton, ordered pretrial competency screening. “Recognizing the state’s notice of intention to seek the death penalty, the court on April 13, 2010 ordered that, absent written objection, the trial judge appoint experts for IQ prescreening pursuant to A.R.S. §13-754 (A)(1) and sanity prescreening pursuant to A.R.S. §13-754 (A)(2).”

Redondo is to be evaluated at Maricopa County Jail and the examiner is ordered to return a report to the court by the next case management conference which has been set for Jan. 31, 2011.

In a separate case, Redondo has been charged with first degree murder and misconduct involving weapons in the shooting-death of Miami resident Ernie Singh in June of 2009. His trial for these charges is currently set to begin April 5, 2011 in Gila County Superior Court, Div. I.
