Two men indicted in Gilbert officer's killing

An indictment has been handed up against two suspects in the shooting death of a Gilbert police lieutenant, authorities announced Saturday.

Christopher Angel Redondo, 35, of Globe, is accused of fatally shooting Lt. Eric Shuhandler, 42, in the head during a traffic stop Jan. 28. Redondo is now charged with first-degree murder, four counts of drive-by shooting and 19 counts of aggravated assault.

Daimen Irizarry, 30, of Gilbert, was driving their vehicle, and is charged with first-degree murder, four counts of drive-by shooting, and 19 counts of aggravated assault.

"We consider an attack on a police officer as an attack on the community and these charges reflect that," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in a news release.

Police said that after Shuhandler was shot in the head, Redondo and Irizarry led officers on a wild 50-mile chase from Mesa to the mining community of Superior, where they were wounded in a gun battle with officers.

Court documents state that after Redondo was released in June 2008 from a four-year term in an Arizona prison for aggravated assault and related charges, he became more and more angry and distrustful of police, and showed violent tendencies, particularly to animals.

Shuhandler is survived by his ex-wife, daughters, ages 10 and 12, his parents and a sister.
