Britt Allen Ripkowski - Texas Death Row

    Summary of Offense:

Ripkowski once lived in Salt Lake City and had a tumultuous relationship with Dominque's mother, Monica Allen, 29, according to evidence. In December 1997, he traveled from Houston to Utah, allegedly beat and strangled Monica Allen and kidnapped Dominque. Jurors took about three hours to convict Ripkowski of capital murder for suffocating two-year-old Dominque "Nikki" Frome, who he had kidnapped from Utah and later buried in a small suitcase in northeast Harris County.

Ripkowski was sentenced to death in Harris County on August 10, 1999.

Ripkowski put her body in a suitcase and left it on the side of the road in Houston, Texas. The suitcase remained there for approximately one week, at which time, Ripkowski took the suitcase and buried it in a shallow grave.
The facts may be wrong on this one. Apparently the mother was murdered in December, not January. It struck me odd that the offender would have kept the child for almost a year before killing her, so I searched and found this archived news article which is different and appears to be more reliable. In any case, what a heartbreaking story...

Texas man charged in S.L. murder, kidnapping

A Houston man facing the death penalty in Texas for killing a Salt Lake toddler now faces additional murder and kidnapping charges in Utah. Brit A. Ripowski, 27, was charged Wednesday with first-degree felony murder and aggravated kidnapping charges.

He is charged with killing Monica Frome, 29, in her Salt Lake apartment on Dec. 21, then kidnapping her 2-year-old daughter, Dominique Frome, and taking her to Texas.Monica Frome's battered body was found in a shallow grave off U.S. 666 east of Monticello the next day. A white teddy bear and bloody coat lying off the side of the road attracted the attention of some passersby, who reported their find.

Police found Monica Frome's body in a grave covered with leaves and twigs. An autopsy determined she died of suffocation and blunt force trauma.

The body bore no identification, and San Juan County Sheriff Mike Lacy released a composite drawing of her that was eventually identified by her landlord.

"We went up (to Salt Lake) and looked at where she was living and found the crime scene," said Lacy. Since the apartment was in Salt Lake, Lacy turned the case over to local police.

After identifying Monica Frome's body, police tracked Ripowski to Houston, Texas, in their search for her daughter. Houston police reported Ripowski eventually led them to the girl's body, stuffed in a suitcase and buried near a highway.

Police believe Ripowski suffocated the girl in his Houston apartment, then buried her in a wooded area out of the city.

According to the charges filed by the Salt Lake District Attorney's office, Ripowski admitted to investigators on Jan. 22 that he suffocated Monica Frome in her North Redwood apartment.

"After killing Monica, he took her body and her 2-year-old daughter, Dominique Frome, from the apartment and drove to Houston, Texas, so no one would know what happened to Monica," according to the charges.

"On the way he deposited Monica's body off of Route 666 near Monticello, Utah. He continued to Houston, Texas, where he subsequently strangled and killed Dominique," the charges state.

Frome had sought a protective order against Ripowski in October after she was injured during an argument with him, according to court records. When Frome didn't show for a Nov. 10 court hearing, the protective order was dismissed.

    Thanks for the correction Rob.

Ripkowski is nearing the end of his appeals. He petitioned the US Supreme Court for a writ of certiorari on November 14, 2011.

    Welcome.

I hope he is also nearing the end of his life. As much as we try to remain objective, it's hard when it comes to baby killers. I have a daughter that age, so it really hit close to home.

Appeal for Death Row Inmate in Bryan Murder Denied

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to review appeals from two Texas death row inmates, including a man who suffocated a 2-year-old Utah girl on Christmas Day 1997 and buried her in a suitcase near Houston.

Britt Ripkowski was condemned for the slaying of Dominque Frome. Evidence showed the child was murdered two days after her mother, Ripkowski's ex-girlfriend, was killed and left in a field near the Utah-Colorado border. Riplowski also was charged with her death.

In the second case, the high court refused the appeal of Marcus Druery. The Waco college student went to death row for fatally shooting and robbing a fellow student outside Bryan on Halloween 2002. Dreury and 20-year-old victim Skyyler Browne both were attending Texas State Technical College in Waco.
