Anthony Allen Shore - Texas Execution - January 18, 2018

Laurie Lee Tremblay, Maria Del Carmen Estrada, 21, Jane Doe, 14 (survived), Diana Rebollar, 9, and Dana Sanchez, 16

    Facts of the Crime:

On September 26, 1986, Shore kidnapped a 15-year-old girl and strangled her to death with a cord.

On April 16, 1992, Shore kidnapped a 21-year-old woman, sexually assaulted her and strangled her to death with a cord.

On October 19, 1993, Shore entered the home of a 14-year-old girl, bound and sexually assaulted her, and strangled her to death

On August 7, 1994, Shore kidnapped and sexually assaulted a nine-year-old girl causing her death.

On July 6, 1995, Shore kidnapped a 16-year-old girl and sexually assaulted her causing her death.

Shore was a confessed serial rapist/killer. The crime for which he was on trial was the kidnap/rape/strangulation of Maria Del Carmen Estrada, 21. Shore described to police he was hearing voices that he had to possess Estrada. Shore also confessed to killing Laurie Lee Tremblay, 15, in 1986, Dana Sanchez, 16, in 1995, and Diana Rebollar, 9, in 1994. Two of these three victims were raped. He had also been convicted of sexually assaulting two family members. These convictions put him in the DNA database, which then led to his being tied to the Estrada murder when some fingernail scrapings were analyzed that had not been tested earlier. Shore insisted his counsel not cross-examine witnesses, and not present mitigating evidence because he wanted a death sentence.

Shore was sentenced to death in Harris County in November 2004.

IN THE COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS
    OF TEXAS

    NO. WR-78,133-01
    EX PARTE ANTHONY ALLEN SHORE

ON APPLICATION FOR POST-CONVICTION WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS
CAUSE NO. 966087 IN THE 339TH DISTRICT COURT
    HARRIS COUNTY
    Per Curiam.

    O R D E R

In October 2004, a jury found applicant guilty of the offense of capital murder. The jury answered the statutory punishment questions in such a way that the trial court set applicant's punishment at death. On August 10, 2006, the State filed in this Court its brief on applicant's direct appeal. Pursuant to Article 11.071 §§ 4(a) and (b) (1), applicant's initial application for a writ of habeas corpus was due to be filed in the trial court on or before December 27, 2006, assuming a motion for extension was timely filed and granted. It has been more than five years since the application was due in the trial court. Accordingly, we order the trial court to resolve any remaining issues within 90 days from the date of this order. The clerk shall then transmit the complete writ record to this Court within 120 days from the date of this order. Any extensions of time shall be obtained from this Court.

IT IS SO ORDERED THIS THE 1ST DAY OF AUGUST, 2012.

9 to 10 years from now, if all appeals are denied.

Initially, victim witnesses were limited to immediate family of the deceased. In 1998, at the request of victim survivors, the Texas Board of Criminal Justice revised this rule. The victim’s family is given the opportunity to invite close friends of the deceased or surviving relatives, law enforcement officials, and prosecutors previously involved in the case the opportunity to view. In May 2008, the Board expanded the rule allowing victim witnesses to be accompanied by a spiritual advisor.

When there is one victim, five victim witnesses are allowed to view. With multiple victims, the victim witnesses may be increased to six; however, the victim witness slots are divided evenly between the families of the victims.

If there are multiple victims and only one capital murder conviction, the family with the capital murder conviction has priority over the witness slots, with any unused slots going to the families of the other victims whose cases were never tried. Victim witnesses may also have three support person slots per execution.

These are persons that may accompany the victim witnesses to Huntsville for support, but must remain in the support room during the execution.

I don't believe Texas allows anyone not affiliated with the case, other than media, to witness executions. For more information you can contact the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
