    Vincent Accardo Sentenced to Death

A Yuma man was sentenced to death Wednesday for the 1997 slaying of a California resident.

Vincent Lee Accardo, 60, was convicted last month by a Yuma County Superior Court jury of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Kenneth Cloud, 55, of Bard, California, was shot while sitting in his pickup truck outside a restaurant in December 1997 and later died at Yuma Regional Medical Center.

Prosecutors said Cloud's wife is scheduled to stand trial January 20 on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Kay Cloud is accused of hiring Accardo to kill her husband.

Death Row inmate Accardo dies of natural causes

Prison officials say an Eyman State Prison inmate has died of natural causes while awaiting execution for the 1997 murder of a Bard farmer in the parking lot of a Yuma restaurant.

According to Barret Marson, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Corrections, 62-year-old Vincent Lee Accardo died at a hospital outside the prison at about 9:27 p.m. Wednesday.

Marson said Accardo was taken from the ASPC-Eyman's Browning Unit, where he was being housed, to Mt. Vista Hospital on Feb. 14 due to health reasons.

Accardo was sentenced to death for the first-degree murder of Kenneth Cloud on June 27, 2008, in Yuma County Superior Court by a jury of eight women and four men.

The same jury also found Accardo guilty of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and gave him life in prison. The jury returned its verdict after only two and half hours of deliberations. The verdict followed a nearly month and half trial.

Marson added that Accardo was sent to prison on Aug. 1, 2008, to begin serving out his sentence. He was sentenced to die by lethal injection, but Marson said no execution date had been scheduled.

Carol Cloud, the victim's sister, said she was informed by the DOC about Accardo's passing away shortly after it happened.

“I think that is the best news anyone could get,” Cloud said.

Kay Cloud, Ken Cloud's wife at the time, allegedly hired Accardo to kill her husband, who was shot to death in the parking lot of Burgers and Beer, 321 W. 20th St., on Dec. 9, 1997.

Ken Cloud was shot in the neck while he sat in his pickup after he and his wife ate at the restaurant.

Moments after Cloud got into his pickup, a man walked up and fired a gun through the driver's side window. The bullet hit a major artery in Cloud's neck. He was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Although she escaped the death penalty, Kay Cloud was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for release on Oct. 10, 2010, after a trial held in Yuma County Superior Court.

Yuma wife who hired hitman loses sentence appeal

A Yuma woman convicted of hiring a hitman to kill her husband in 1997 has been denied an appeal of her life sentence.
The Yuma Sun reports the Arizona Court of Appeals upheld Lois Kay Cloud's life sentence last month at a hearing in Phoenix.

Cloud was convicted of first-degree murder, solicitation to commit first-degree murder, facilitation to commit first-degree murder and hindering prosecution.

She was sentenced in October 2010 with no chance of parole.

Prosecutors say Vincent Lee Accardo shot Kenneth Cloud in the neck on Dec. 9, 1997 while the victim was sitting in his truck outside a restaurant.

Accardo was sentenced to death but died in March 2011 of natural causes.

Cloud's appellate lawyer had argued there were several errors during her trial and insufficient evidence.
