Clarence Wayne Dixon - Arizona Execution - May 11, 2022

    Deana Bowdoin

    Facts of the Crime:

Sentenced to death on January 24, 2008 for the murder of 21-year-old Deana Bowdoin, who was found raped, strangled and stabbed to death at her Tempe apartment the night of January 7, 1978. Dixon was serving a life sentence in an Arizona state prison for a 1986 sexual assault conviction. He was indicted in November 2002 after police found new DNA evidence that connected him to the Bowdoin case.

A jury sentenced Clarence Dixon to death after just 20 minutes of deliberation Thursday afternoon.

The same jury had previously found him guilty of the rape and murder of an Arizona State University student in 1978.

The verdict came a day after family members told the jury what the death of 21-year-old Deana Bowdoin had meant to them.

Her mother, Billie Bowdoin, who lives in Ahwatukee Foothills with her husband, told the jury, "When a parent dies, the past is taken. But when a child dies her future is taken."

During the family's statements several of the jurors had to use tissues to wipe away tears.

Dixon, 51, is already serving six life sentences for the 1985 rape of a Northern Arizona State University student.

At the time of Bowdoin's death, Dixon had been found innocent by reason of insanity on an unrelated aggravated assault charge, a verdict that no longer exists. He had been released by then-Maricopa County Superior Court judge Sandra Day O'Connor awaiting commitment to the state mental hospital.

The family had no idea who killed Bowdoin until a DNA match with Dixon was found in 2001.

Ruling upholds conviction, sentence in '78 killing

A man's murder conviction and death sentence in the 1978 killing of an Arizona State University student still stand after a review by the state Supreme Court.

The court's unanimous decision Friday denies an automatic appeal filed on behalf of Clarence Wayne Dixon.

He was charged 24 years after the stabbing and strangulation death of 21-year-old Deanna Bowdoin in her Tempe apartment.

Dixon had lived across the street at the time, but was in a state prison in 2001 when a check of a national DNA database matched his profile with evidence from the killing.

In today's United States Supreme Court orders, Dixon's petition for a writ of certiorari and motion for leave to proceed in forma pauperis was DENIED.

2 years to rule on a habeas petition. I know that is the norm, but that length of time is ridiculous.

Considering the 9th circuit are still considering petitions from the year Dixon was sentenced I'd say this case is probably likely to suddenly slow down a lot.

On November 14, 2018, oral argument will be heard in Dixon's appeal before the Ninth Circuit. The panel will be made up of Chief Judge Thomas (Clinton), Judge Graber (Clinton) and Judge Ikuta (G.W. Bush).
