Man sentenced to death for murders in '90s

    By Tyler Lockman
    The Arizona Republic

A Maricopa County Superior Court jury on Tuesday sentenced a man to death for two murders committed in the early '90s.

Scott A. Lehr, 49, was convicted of the murder charges in separate trials in 1996 and 1997. A judge sentenced Lehr to death then, but the sentence was overturned in 2002 when the U.S. Supreme Court determined that only juries, and not judges, could sentence a defendant to death.

Lehr was found guilty in 1997 for the murders of Margaret Christorf, killed in 1991, and Michelle Morales, killed in 1992. On Tuesday, he received a death sentence for each. The jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict of death regarding the murder of Belinda Cronin, who was killed in 1992.
In that case, Judge Andrew Klein will decide whether Lehr will be sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole or life in prison with a chance of parole after 25 years.

Lehr, a Phoenix resident at the time and father of three daughters, became known as the "Baby Seat" rapist in 1991 and 1992 for his use of a baby seat in his car to lure 10 young girls and women.

Through various ploys, Lehr would lure the women, either hitchhiking or walking alone, into his car and drive them to a remote desert area. There, he sexually assaulted, choked and beat the women with large rocks.

Lehr was arrested in June 1992. Victims were able to link Lehr to the attacks through descriptions of his car, partial license-plate numbers and the baby seat.

This sentencing re-trial for Lehr began in January.

"Our office will seek justice for the victims of heinous murders as often as necessary, including those cases in which the death penalty has already been imposed once before," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in the statement.

Lehr was also sentenced in 1997 to 17 consecutive life sentences on 32 counts of attempted murder, sexual assault and kidnapping.

In today's United States Supreme Court orders, Lehr's petition for a writ of certiorari and motion for leave to proceed in forma pauperis was DENIED.
