    Alfonso Raymond Salazar - Arizona

    Facts of the Crime:

On July 25, 1986, Salazar and Michael Davis pulled the wrought iron bars from a window and entered the Tucson home of Sarah Kaplan. Ms. Kaplan was 83 years old, weighed less than 90 pounds, was five feet tall and wore a patch on one eye. Salazar and Davis beat her and strangled her with the telephone cord. Fingerprints belonging to both men were found at the scene. One of Salazar's prints was found in her blood.

In a separate trial, Davis was convicted and sentenced to death, but was granted a retrial because of ineffective assistance of counsel and ultimately received a life sentence.

Salazar was sentenced to death on February 9, 1988.

On November 4, 2008, Salazar filed an appeal in the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit over the denial of his habeas petition in Federal District Court.

Arizona Death Row Inmate Dies Of Complications From COVID-19

An Arizona death row inmate has died due to complications from COVID-19.

Alfonso Salazar was housed at the state prison in Florence, Central Unit. He had been hospitalized since April 21.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's website shows Salazar's death occurred April 30.

Assistant Federal Public Defender Dale Baich says his office was advised today that "Mr. Salazar passed away late this morning as a result of complications from COVID-19. He died in the hospital."

“The prison was slow to act,” Baich said, “and is not being transparent about its handling of the pandemic. Even before the COVID-19 crisis, medical care in Arizona prisons was poor and it is the subject of ongoing litigation."

Baich says Salazar was sentenced to die but not like this.

“This is a critical time, and states must do much more to protect public health and to provide better care and more transparency as this virus moves through the country's prison population,” Baich said.

The Arizona Department of Corrections has so far not confirmed any inmate deaths related to COVID-19.

Get the dancing crabs and dancing pallbearers.

I hope AZ death row gets hit hard, because I sure doubt they'll ever execute again.

"They will hurt you. They will hurt your grandma, these people. The root cause of this is there's no discipline in the homes, they don't go to school, you know, they live off the government, no personal accountability, and they just beat people up for no reason, and it's disgusting." - Former Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters

Have faith Aaron. Oklahoma finally did. The federal government has a real shot with Trump staying in office. South Carolina is on track to get the electric chair passed at least it’s moving through the house there rather than just dying in the house committee. There is hope. Ducey supports the death penalty. The attorney general there is aggressive supporter of it.
