A convicted child killer has been sentenced to death for the Phoenix murder of a 5-year-old girl, the county attorney's office announced Wednesday.

Joshua Villalobos, 26, received the death penalty late Tuesday night, ending a month-long trial, County Attorney Andrew Thomas said.

Villalobos was convicted on March 31st for the murder of 5-year-old Ashley Molina, his girlfriend's daughter.

Molina died of blunt force trauma while in the care of Villalobos in January 2004, Phoenix police said.

According to a probable cause statement, Villalobos admitted to punching Molina several times. Afterwards, Villalobos claimed he performed CPR on her since she stopped breathing. Villalobos did not seek medical attention for Molina that night.

The following morning, Molina was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Molina had 170 bruises on her body, medical personal said.

"This child suffered a slow and painful death at the hands of someone who was supposed to be caring for her," Thomas said.

Molina's mother, Linda Verdugo, 25, also pleaded guilty to one count of Child Abuse for failing to protect her daughter.

    Her sentencing is May 16th.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Supreme Court has upheld the death penalty of a Phoenix man convicted in the 2004 slaying of his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter.

State prosecutors say 28-year-old Joshua Idelfonso Villalobos was convicted in March 2008 of felony murder and child abuse in the death of Ashley Molina. He was later given the death sentence but appealed to the state's high court.

Authorities says Villalobos beat the child to discipline her for hitting her younger half-sister on Jan. 3, 2004. At one point, the child stopped breathing and Villalobos claimed to administer CPR but did not seek medical help for fear of being arrested.

A day later, Villalobos and his girlfriend brought the child to a hospital, but authorities say the girl had already been dead for up to eight hours. An emergency room physician told authorities that the girl had as many as 200 bruises on her body.
