Is 11 years not to long for a decision? The only information i read about him, is the one that he complained in 2010 the lack of pastor-visits, while Robert Foley had the right- really terrible oversight...

Death row inmates win 2nd chance in lawsuit

A trio of Kentucky death row inmates (Robert Foley, Roger Epperson and Vincent Stopher) will get another chance to show they have a right to a sweat lodge, pow wow and traditional foods to conduct Native American religious ceremonies behind bars at the prison.

The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati on Friday ordered part of a lawsuit brought by those inmates be reinstated after concluding that state officials failed to show compelling reasons for denying their requests.

The appeals court also turned away a related bid by two condemned inmates (Randy Haight and Gregory Wilson) to get monetary damages from prison officials for changing the rules on pastoral visits to those on death row.

U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell ruled in 2013 that the prison's rejection of the requests were necessary for the security of inmates and others.

Fallen Lexington officer to be honored on 30-year anniversary of death

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A Lexington police officer, who was accidentally killed in the line of duty 30 years ago, will be honored Sunday night.

The Lexington Police Department, along with members of Roy Mardis' family, will gather at 6:00pm Sunday to remember his death. The 35-year-old officer was helping Kentucky State Police track an escapee in Mercer County when Lexington Police say Mardis was shot and killed in crossfire. Authorities were looking for Randy Haight, a double murder suspect, and Mardis was using his bloodhound to help in the search. Police were able to capture Haight, and he is currently on Kentucky's Death Row awaiting execution for the two murders.

Police say Mardis was accidentally shot in the hunt for Haight when Mardis' bloodhound chased the escapee through a corn field. Haight ran through the field, and officers on the perimeter opened fire, accidentally striking Mardis.

In 1994, the name of the road leading into the Canine Unit Training Facility was officially changed to Roy Mardis Drive. A new street sign will be dedicated at Sunday night's ceremony. It will include a badge displaying the number assigned to Officer Mardis.
