Judge mulls arguments in Mississippi death penalty protocol

    By Emily Wagster Pettus
    Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A federal judge will decide whether to block Mississippi from using three drugs when it puts inmates to death.

His ruling could determine whether the state carries out its next execution in about two weeks.

U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate heard arguments Monday in a lawsuit filed in 2015 on behalf of some Mississippi death row inmates.

Wingate noted that one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Thomas Edwin Loden Jr., faces a Dec. 14 execution date.

The mother of the 16-year-old girl killed by Loden watched the court hearing.

Wanda Farris of Fulton says she has waited 22 years for justice for her daughter, Leesa Gray.

“There are lots of extremely smug and self-satisfied people in what would be deemed lower down in society, who also deserve to be pulled up. In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything.”

In the same order denying Thomas Loden's challenges against his impending execution, Judge Wingate scheduled a January 19th, 2023 hearing over the Mississippi execution protocol lawsuit.

So, will the involuntary execution of Thomas Loden pave the way for four more executions in Mississippi next year?

The root cause of this is there's no discipline in the homes, they don't go to school, you know, they live off the government, no personal accountability, and they just beat people up for no reason, and it's disgusting." - Former Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters

It’s very likely that Richard Jordan, Robert Simon, Charles Crawford and Lisa Chamberlain will all receive execution dates next year.

Loden was from Itawamba County. Let's see if other counties sign off on death warrants?

The attorney general will have to request the dates from the MSC.

If AG Lynch follows the same rationale of her colleague in Oklahoma, the first in line should now be Crawford, then Simon, Jordan and Chamberlain in this order.

I agree. I believe Robert Simon’s crime was worse than Crawford’s but since Simon is probably gonna keep claiming that Amnesia bs it’s probably reasonable to get Crawford out of the way first. It’s definitely likely she’ll request a date for Jordan before Chamberlain.
