    Jerry Jones Sentenced to Death

A Gordon County jury deliberated about four hours over two days to decide that Jerry Jones should die for killing his former girlfriend's parents, sister and their 10-month old daughter.

Jones had pleaded guilty about year after the January 2004 murders but he had to be tried before a jury because Gordon County District Attorney Joe Campbell was seeking the death penalty.

The jury deliberated for about an hour on Thursday and three hours more on Friday before coming back with its decision.

Jones told police he killed Tommy and Nola Blaylock, ages 59 and 61, Georgia Bradley, 34, and Jerri Jones, his infant daughter with former girlfriend Melissa Peeler, to get back at his ex-sweetheart because she was leaving him.

Peeler, a truck driver, was in Oregon meeting with a prospective driving partner when Jones called her to tell her he had killed her family and had also taken her three daughters, two of them also his. He was caught the next day near Chattanooga, where he shot himself in the jaw while the girls watched.

Judge sets competency hearing date for convicted quadruple murderer

At the request of quadruple murderer and death row inmate Jerry Jones, a competency hearing has been set for later this year.

Jones pleaded guilty in 2006 to the murders of Jerri Georgia Jones, Georgia Mae Bradley, Tom Blaylock and Nola Blaylock, according to a 2006 Calhoun Times story.

Jones was also granted a psychiatric evaluation during the hearing, set to be carried out today.

Superior Court Judge Carey Nelson set the competency hearing for Dec. 2, 2011. During this hearing, Judge Nelson will consider the findings of the planned psychological evaluation of Jones.

Competency hearing for convicted quadruple murderer is Dec. 2

Jerry Jones, 39, who pleaded guilty in 2006 to the murders of Jerri Georgia Jones, Georgia Mae Bradley, Tom Blaylock and Nola Blaylock, will appear at the Gordon County courthouse Dec.2 for a mental competency hearing.

Joe Campbell, District Attorney for Gordon County, said the hearing is a step towards an appeals process for Jones’ death row sentence and psychiatrists from both sides, who have examined Jones, are expected to testify.

Campbell said anyone who is on death row has the opportunity to file a direct appeal, since the death penalty is the harshest and most closely-examined sentence.

“We are talking about someone’s life or death,” he said. “It (court proceedings where the death penalty is a possibility) is the most scrutinized type of litigation.”

At next Friday’s hearing, Jones’ defense attorneys and the Gordon County District Attorney’s Office are expected to present their findings from previous psychiatric evaluations of Jones to Gordon County Superior Court Judge Carey Nelson.

Jones’ defense has not yet officially filed documents for an appeal, according to Campbell.

The attorneys had the chance to do so during an Aug. 5 hearing, which took place in order to set a date for the competency hearing, he said.

Ultimately, Campbell said, the hearing will address Jones’ sanity. The decision that lies before Judge Nelson will be, “does Jones understand what’s going on?” Campbell explained.

Psychiatrist: Jerry Jones not mentally competent

Quadruple murderer Jerry Jones is currently in a hearing before a Judge Carey Nelson to determine if he is mentally competent to assist his lawyers during the appeals process in his death penalty conviction.

The hearing started at 9 a.m. today and is continuing throughout the day.

Jones' lawyer, Jack Martin, started the hearing off by bringing psychiatrist Dr. George Woods to the stand to discuss an interview he had with Jones yesterday.

Woods spent an hour and a half with Jones yesterday where his official determination was that Jones has a psychosis that is more complex than someone with a single disorder.

Woods discussed options to make Jones mentally able.

He said he believes forced medication would not simply work because of brain injuries he may have received as a child, due to his mother having a drinking problem.

Woods stated that the amount of time that has passed without treatment would decrease the likelihood of drug treatments working to make Jones competent.

The doctor also mentioned that Jones thinks he is a part of the Dow Jones family and thinks people are poisoning his food and that this trial is just reflective of the amount of money he has.

Jones spoke out during the testimony today.

During the hearing Woods testified Jones told him that Jones has been communicating with his children over the past 8 years, which is untrue.

Jones spoke out in court and said "that's not true."

Court was delayed for a time so Woods could gather his notes and provide those to the district attorney.

Murderer Jerry Jones to be evaluated further

According to a court order released by Judge Carey Nelson, convicted quadruple murderer Jerry Jones needs to be evaluated to see if there is a chance he can become mentally competent for an appeal to his death sentence.

The order states that Jones is currently incompetent and unable to assist counsel in preparing for his motion for an appeals trial. The order also says Jones cannot be treated with forced medication.

Through the order, Nelson gave the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and the Department of Corrections 90 days to determine if Jones’ competence can be restored enough to stand trial for an appeal.

DBHDD will report its evaluations and findings of Jones to the court within the 90 days, according to court documents.

A hearing in Gordon County Superior Court meant to review Jones’ mental competency for an appeals trial took place Dec. 2. Nelson said at the end of that hearing he would issue an order to decide Jones’ next step in the appeals process in his death penalty conviction.

Jones pleaded guilty in 2006 to killing four people in Ranger, including his 10-month-old daughter, Jerri Georgia Jones, who was his daughter with former girlfriend Melissa Peeler; Georgia Mae Bradley, Peeler’s sister; and Tom and Nola Blaylock, Peeler’s stepfather and mother.
