Execution warrant signed for Atlanta cop killer

    By Rhonda Cook
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A warrant was signed Wednesday setting the execution of cop killer Gregory Lawler for any time during the seven days starting with Oct. 19.

Lawler was sentenced to die for murdering Atlanta police officer John Sowa and critically wounding his partner, Patricia Cocciolone, on Oct. 12, 1997, moments after the two officers had brought home Lawler’s intoxicated girlfriend.

If Lawler is put to death, he will be the seventh person Georgia has executed this year, more than any other year since capital punishment was reinstated in the mid 1970s.

The Department of Corrections sets the specific date and time that the execution will be carried out. Traditionally, it is set for 7 p.m. on the first day of the seven-day window noted in the execution warrant.

Jeez! That was fast! He's going to be executed 16 days after cert was denied. Did they issue the date so quickly because he killed a cop?

Oh no, the drugs are good. Georgia has perfected this. No more waiting on dates or drug shortages. When the warrant is signed it's time to move.

Execution of Atlanta cop killer, if it happens, will set records

The retired judge who presided over Gregory Lawler’s trial in 2000 for murdering an Atlanta police officer signed a warrant on Wednesday setting his execution for Oct. 19.

If the 64-year-old Lawler is executed by lethal injection as scheduled, he will be the seventh person Georgia has put to death this year, more than any other state thus far in 2016, and the most in one year in Georgia since capital punishment was reinstated in the mid-1970s.

On Oct. 12, 1997, Officer John Sowa and his partner were dispatched after a witness reported seeing Lawler hit his girlfriend with a bag. Lawler and Donna Rodgers had been walking home from a nearby bar.

Sowa and Officer Patricia Cocciolone saw Rodgers, intoxicated, sitting on a curb in a parking lot and Lawler trying to pull her to her feet. Lawler walked away and went home when he saw the officers.

The two officers decided to give Rodgers a ride to the couple’s Buckhead apartment.

When Lawler opened the door, he shouted obscenities at the two officers as Rodgers walked in. Then, according to testimony, Lawler grabbed an AR-15 carbine he kept by the door and fired 15 perpetrator bullets, which can pierce police body armor.

Cocciolone, hit three times, was able to call for help. Sowa, 25, was killed — shot five times — and his body fell beside a parked car near a sidewalk on Morosgo Way in Buckhead.

After a six-hour standoff, a hostage negotiator persuaded Lawler to surrender. In the apartment, police found the assault rifle used to kill Sowa and wound Cocciolone, along with numerous other firearms and several types of ammunition.

Why is it that a retired judge sets an execution date?

Clemency hearing set for Georgia man set to die next week

ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles has scheduled a clemency hearing for a man who's scheduled for execution next week.

Gregory Paul Lawler is scheduled to be put to death on Oct. 19 at the state prison in Jackson. The parole board set a hearing at 9 a.m. on Oct. 18 to hear from representatives for Lawler.

The 63-year-old was convicted of murder in the October 1997 shooting death of Atlanta police Officer John Sowa. Authorities say Lawler also critically injured Officer Patricia Cocciolone.

Prosecutors say Lawler shot the officers as they tried to bring his intoxicated girlfriend home. Officers who arrived after Cocciolone sent a distress call had a six-hour standoff with Lawler before persuading him to surrender.

Lawler would be the seventh Georgia inmate executed this year.

It says the warrant has 7 days of expiring. What's the protocol with this one? Does he die the 19th, or how does it work?
