MURDERER ON DEATH ROW MAKES LENGTHY LAST MEAL REQUEST

A murderer awaiting execution in Georgia made his his final meal request — and the menu is extensive

A convicted murderer set to be executed in Georgia in September put in his customary request for a final meal — and his dinner menu is lengthy. For his final meal on Earth, Keith Leroy Tharpe has asked for: three spicy chicken breasts, roast beef sandwich with sauce, fish sandwich, tater logs, and onion rings. But the meal doesn’t stop with dinner, he also requested a sweet dessert of apple pie and a vanilla milkshake, the Georgia Department of Corrections press release reveals.

Tharpe was sentenced to death in 1991 for the murder of Jacquelin Freeman. He is scheduled for execution by lethal injection at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.

The Georgia man is not the first inmate to make an odd or lengthy last meal request. Stephen Anderson, who was sentenced to death for burglary, assault, seven counts of murder, and escaping from prison, had a similarly long menu. For his last meal, Anderson requested two grilled cheese sandwiches, a pint of cottage cheese, a hominy/corn mixture, peach pie, chocolate chip ice cream, and radishes.

John Wayne Gacy was sentenced to death for rape and 33 counts of murder. For his last meal, Gacy requested 12 fried shrimp, a bucket of original recipe KFC, french fries, and a pound of strawberries.

Other death row inmates, however have notoriously requested less-than average meals. Victor Feguer, who was sentenced to death for kidnapping and murder, requested a single olive with the pit in it. Ted Bundy, one of the most notorious serial killers in American history, declined a special meal. He was given the traditional last meal: steak cooked medium-rare, eggs over easy, hash browns, toast with butter and jelly, milk, and juice.

Tharpe’s execution is scheduled for September 26. If executed, Tharpe will be the 48th inmate put to death by lethal injection, the department of corrections says. Overall, here have been 69 men and one woman executed in Georgia since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976.

I don't think a date has been set. I don't see anything about it on Twitter, and GA doesn't set dates as far in advance as 2 months.

Besides, that article says "69 men and 1 woman" have been executed. Tharpe would have been the 70th man last year. GA has executed 71 men and 1 woman. This is an old article being republished.

This article has been making the rounds the past two days he doesn't have a date. This is fake news, all of the stories use CBS as the source, he had a date for September 26 2017 which got stayed.

What’s stopping GA from setting a new date for Tharpe? Didn’t SCOTUS deny him?

Tharpe will probably seek cert over the 11th circuit denial on remand. Cert was denied out of the GA supreme court, so once SCOTUS denies cert in the 11th circuit decision that was issued in spring, he'll probably get a date. Maybe late 2018 or early next year.

The 11th Circuit denied Tharpe's request to reconsider its denial of a COA in April today.
