I hate it too Michael, but I am thankful that this wasn't 10 years out and Davidson received a new trial. At least it is still fresh in the locals' minds and I would bet they will all receive the same sentences.

Death row inmate back in Knoxville facing more charges

One of the defendants in the 2007 kidnapping, rape and murders of Channon Christian and Chris Newsom is back in Knox County facing an unrelated charge. New court dates have been set for the defendants convicted in the Christian-Newsom case.

Lemaricus Davidson was scheduled to appear for motions March 2 in Knox County Criminal Court as a defendant in an aggravated robbery case that occurred prior to the murders. Davidson’s court date for that charge was set for April 16.

Davidson has been on death row at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution since he received the death penalty in 2009. A new trial is set to begin April 5 for Davidson, along with co-defendants Vanessa Coleman, George Thomas and Letalvis Cobbins.

The Christian-Newsom murder was viewed by most as the most gruesome and horrific case in Knoxville history. On Jan. 6, 2007, UT students Channon Christian, 21, and Chris Newsom, 23, were carjacked in East Knoxville. They were driven to a house on Chipman Street near Waste Connections off Cherry Street. After Channon was made to watch her boyfriend being raped, mutilated, shot, set on fire and dumped by railroad tracks, she was gang raped, tortured in numerous ways, then set on fire. Her body was found in five different trash bags in the house. A friend of Newsom reportedly found his truck while searching for him. Christian’s father was looking for her when she didn’t come home and found her abandoned Toyota Four-Runner. He called police.

The investigation uncovered evidence against Davidson and the others. After all defendants convicted and sentenced, news got out about the presiding judge Richard Baumgartner dealing drugs with a defendant in another case. The judge retired and was later disbarred.

The judge’s behavior resulted in Judge Kerry Blackwood ordering all defendants to be retried. The new trial is set to begin April 5 for Davidson. Co-defendant Letalvis Cobbins has a new trial date of Aug. 27. Co-defendant George Thomas is scheduled for a new trial on Oct. 22. A new trial is set for Nov. 12 for co-defendant Vanessa Coleman.

Death penalty out in all but one of four torture slaying suspects

    It's official.

Death is no longer a possible fate for three of four defendants in the January 20007 torture slayings of a Knox County couple.

Assistant District Attorney General Leland Price has filed notice of an intention to seek the death penalty as punishment in the deaths of Channon Christian, 21, and boyfriend Christopher Newsom, 23, only against alleged ringleader Lemaricus Davidson.

Price this month notified attorneys for Davidson's brother, Letalvis Cobbins, and Cobbins' friend, George Thomas, that he will push for a fate in their cases no more than life without possibility of parole. Because Cobbins' girlfriend, Vanessa Coleman, was acquitted of a direct role in the deaths, Price hasn't filed a notice of punishment sought in her case.

The move comes after a special judge ordered up new trials for all four defendants in the wake of a prescription pill abuse scandal involving the judge who once presided over the case. The pleadings filed by Price seem to settle the question of whether retrials might serve up a second shot at death as punishment for all four defendants.

Jurors chosen from two different counties rejected death as punishment in the cases of Cobbins and Thomas at their trials, presided over by Knox County Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner in 2009. A jury for fourth defendant Coleman also was chosen from outside Knox County and acquitted Coleman of any direct role in the slayings of Christian and Newsom.

Davidson, on the other hand, inexplicably sought a jury from Knox County, where upset over the killings ran high. He was sentenced to death.

Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner, who presided over all four trials, admitted last year that he, too, was a criminal addicted to prescription painkillers. As a result of the myriad crimes a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Probe showed Baumgartner had committed while on the bench, Special Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood late last year ordered up new trials for Davidson and his alleged crew.

Under Tennessee law, only a jury can impose death or life without parole as punishment. In cases where either penalty is sought, a prosecutor must convince the panel that certain "aggravating factors" listed in state law outweigh any "mitigating factors" also cited in state law before determining death as punishment.

Price's filings solidify what most courtroom watchers had opined — the so-called double jeopardy provisions of the U.S. Constitution that prohibit a retrial of a defendant declared innocent also apply when a jury rejects death as punishment.

The state Attorney General's Office is asking the state Court of Criminal Appeals to put on hold Blackwood's retrial rulings pending appeal. The appellate court has not yet issued an opinion on the issue.

No murder can be so cruel that there are not still useful imbeciles who do gloss over the murderer and apologize.

    Baumgartner Now Under Federal Investigation

After pleading guilty to a state charge of official misconduct, former Knox County Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner is now under a federal investigation.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm told The Knoxville News Sentinel that investigators are continuing their probe into Baumgartner, specifically looking at possible federal violations in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Baumgartner, whose prescription painkiller abuse was detailed in parts of a TBI file, pleaded guilty last year to one charge of official misconduct in a deal that allowed him to avoid jail time. He also got to keep his pension.

His plea agreement barred the filing of additional state charges, but did not preclude federal prosecution.

Baumgartner was allegedly on painkillers during the trials of four people in the torture-slayings of a young Knoxville couple.

21-year-old Channon Christian and 23-year-old Christopher Newsom were carjacked, sexually tortured and then killed in 2007.

The four were convicted during trials in 2009 and 2010. One of them, Lemaricus Davidson, received the death penalty. Letalvis Cobbins and George Thomas are serving life sentences, and Vanessa Coleman was sentenced to years.

    All four were granted re-trials.

Guilty plea in robbery after Christian-Newsom murders

LeMaricus Davidson pleaded guilty Wednesday to robbing a Pizza Hut a day after the Christian-Newsom murders, in which he faces a second trial.

Davidson, who had a felony record, could receive eight years for the robbery. He pleaded to charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and possession of gun.

He will serve his term concurrent with whatever sentence he's expected to receive for the slayings of Channon Christian and her boyfriend, Chris Newsom.

The couple was carjacked on January 7, 2007, taken to Davidson's rental house, tortured and killed, according to investigators. Davidson is again facing the death penalty in the case.

He and three defendants were previously convicted in the cases, but the verdicts were thrown out in December by Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood. The action followed a guilty plea to official misconduct by presiding Judge Richard Baumgartner.

Davidson robbed a Pizza Hut on N. Broadway on January 8, 2007. He was scheduled to go to trial beginning Monday.

The new trials for Davidson, Letalvis Cobbins, George Thomas and Vanessa Coleman are slated to start this summer.

A lot of Euros do. The antis are a (loud) minority.

Don´t get me wrong, but we don´t have as much murders as "you" do. And I can´t remember crimes like Pena-Erdman, Christian-Newsom, and all these serial killers here in Europe. Crime is not daily business for us.
