Man Gets Life Sentence After Death Penalty Overturned

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - An Upstate man whose 2007 death penalty sentence was recently overturned was resentenced in court Thursday afternoon.

Fredrick Evins was resentenced to life behind bars. He received three consecutive sentences.

A Circuit Court judge overturned the death penalty for Evins after finding he is mentally retarded, our coverage partners at the Spartanburg Herald Journal report.

The new sentence stems from the 2003 murder of Rhonda Ward, the 2002 murder, kidnapping and rape of Damaris Huff and the rape of an 83-year-old woman in 1991.
