Anthony Woods - South Carolina Death Row

    Facts of the Crime:

Woods was convicted and sentenced to death in Clarendon County in 2005 for raping and strangling schoolteacher JoAnn DuBose. A previous trial had ended in a mistrial. Defense attorneys claimed Woods’ schizophrenic mother left him emotionally scarred. Evidence of Woods being hit by a car as a teenager was also presented. At the time of the conviction, Woods was already serving two life sentences for other crimes.

Man gets death penalty in Clarendon County murder trial

Manning - This week, a jury convicted Anthony Woods for murdering and raping a Clarendon County teacher in her home. Now he is facing a death sentence.

Testimony wrapped up early this week in the 42-year-old's second trial. His attorneys rested their case without calling a witness. The verdict came in after less than three hours of deliberations. Woods was found guilty of murder, burglary first and criminal sexual conduct, first degree.

Authorities say in June 2003, Woods broke into the home of Manning Elementary schoolteacher JoAnn DuBose, raping and strangling her with a bedsheet. State Law Enforcement Division agent Nancy Scraba testified Monday Woods' DNA was found on DuBose's sheets and mattress pad.

Woods' first trial in October ended with a hung jury. This time, there's relief for the victim's family and friends. JoAnn's brother, Sonny DuBose, says, "Words are hard to find to express my gratitude and sincere appreciation for justice finally coming to the table. I am so thankful that it's here in Clarendon County."

Woods was already serving life terms for other attacks on two other women.
