Maurice Patterson - Pennsylvania Death Row

    Facts of the Crime:

Convicted and sentenced to death on charges he set up the murder of a Philadelphia man. Thirty-eight-year-old Eric Sawyer was shot twice in the head in a Williamsport alley in March 2007. Prosecutors say Patterson ordered the shooting because drug-dealing associates told him Sawyer was working with police.

Forty-one-year-old Sean Durrant pleaded guilty to murder and acknowledged being the shooter, but testified that Patterson set up the shooting. Another man is serving a life sentence in the case. Patterson testified he dealt drugs but never sanctioned a shooting.

Patterson was sentenced to death in Lycoming County on May 28, 2010.

Pa. man convicted of ordering hit from jail cell

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — A central Pennsylvania man could face the death penalty after being convicted of ordering a hit from his jail cell.

A Lycoming County Jury on Wednesday convicted 36-year-old Maurice Patterson on charges he set up the murder of a Philadelphia man. Now they must decide if he deserves the death penalty or will serve life in prison.

    Pennsylvania v. Patterson

    Opinion Date: April 28, 2014

    Court: Pennsylvania Supreme Court

Appellant Maurice "Boo" Patterson appealed his death sentence after he was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy, and criminal solicitation. The charges against Appellant arose from the fatal shooting of Eric "Bop" Sawyer by Sean "Raydar" Durrant. Durrant confessed to shooting the victim, but claimed he did so at the behest of Appellant, who had been incarcerated in the Lycoming County Prison. Appellant filed post-sentence motions on in 2010 and 2011; the motions were denied in 2012. However, upon discovering that Appellant's sentence for criminal conspiracy was an illegal sentence, in that it exceeded the maximum sentence for the crime, the trial court vacated that portion of Appellant's sentence and resentenced him to 10 to 20 years, to be served concurrently with his death sentence for the murder conviction. Finding no reversible error, the Supreme Court affirmed Appellant's conviction.

Executions scheduled for 3, but Wolf's moratorium continues

Pennsylvania prison officials are scheduling three executions but it's likely they won't go forward because the governor has put in place a capital punishment moratorium.

Corrections Secretary John Wetzel on Wednesday signed notices that put Maurice Patterson, Hector Morales and Herbert Blakeney on schedule to be executed over the coming two months.

But Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf has already issued three reprieves for other death row inmates and says he'll continue to issue them, at least until he gets an overdue legislative study on the death penalty.

There's another execution barrier — the prison system doesn't currently have the mixture of drugs required by law.

Wolf's spokesman says he'll continue to issue reprieves for any imminent executions. The state Supreme Court is reviewing Wolf's policy.

It baffles people beyond belief signing dw's where executions cannot be carried out hence the Governor's moratorium plus no drugs acquired. If and when the times comes about where executions finally resume, then maybe PA could be taken seriously!

Setting an execution date moves the appeals process along.
