Latest: Activist against death penalty detained in Missouri

An activist who opposes the death penalty has been temporarily detained at the Missouri Capitol after attempting to enter the governor's office.

Jeff Stack was handcuffed and detained for trespassing Wednesday when he tried to open a door leading from the public waiting area to the inner office of Gov. Jay Nixon.

Stack said he wanted to talk to Nixon about stopping Wednesday's scheduled execution of Earl Forrest. He said death penalty opponents have "been polite for decades" but that "the governor hasn't really listened."

Capitol police later removed the handcuffs, saying no charges were being pressed.

Stack is a registered lobbyist for Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty.

"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche

    Murderer from Dent County executed

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.- A man who killed two people in a drug dispute and a sheriff's deputy in a subsequent shootout has been put to death in what could be Missouri's last execution for some time.
    Earl Forrest was executed Wednesday.

Forrest went to the home of Harriett Smith in 2002 and demanded that she fulfill her promise to buy a lawn mower and mobilehome for him in exchange for introducing her to a source for methamphetamine. During an argument, Forrest shot Smith and a visitor to her home, Michael Wells.

Forrest fatally shot Dent County Sheriff's Deputy Joann Barnes after she arrived at Forrest's home.

Missouri has executed 19 men since November 2013. But the remaining 25 death row inmates either have appeals still pending or other reasons they will not face imminent execution.

STATEMENT FROM FAMILY OF DENT CO. DEPUTY JOANN BARNES:

ON BEHALF OF CHIEF DEPUTY SHARON "JOANN" BARNES' FAMILY, WE WOULD TO THANK EVERYONE WHO WAS INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS OF SEEKmG JUSTICE THAT LED TO THE CONVICTION AND EXECUTION OF EARL FORREST.

SEVERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES PUT IN COUNTLESS HOURS OF WORK INTO THIS CASE, WE WOULD ESPECIALLY LIKE TO THANK THE DENT COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, SALEM POLICE DEPARTMENT, MISSOURI STATE
HIGHWAY PATROL, DENT COUNTY PROSECUTOR's OFFICE, MISSOURI ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE, 42ND JUDICIAL CIRCUIT OF MISSOURI COURTS, MISSOURI SUPREME COURT, MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, KIMBERLY EVANS AND ANYONE ELSE INVOLVED WHO WE MAY HAVE MISSED.

JOANN WAS A TREMENDOUS PERSON, DAUGHTER, WIFE, SISTER, AUNT, TEACHER, FRIEND AND TRUE HERO WHO GAVE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE. SINCE JOANN's UNTIMELY DEATH, A PORTION OF STATE ROUTE H, IN DENT COUNTY, HAS BEEN NAMED IN HER HONOR, AS WELL AS ONE OF HER GREAT, GREAT NIECES.

THERE HAVE BEEN COUNTLESS STORIES TOLD ABOUT JOANN AND THE MEMORIES SHE MADE IN SO MANY LIVES. JOANN'S DEATH CREATED A VOID IN OUR FAMILY AND COMMUNITY THAT CAN NEVER BE FILLED. JOANN WAS A HUGE PART OF THE COMMUNITY, EVEN BEFORE GOING INTO LAW ENFORCEMENT.

JOANN WAS THE MAJOR INFLUENCE IN ESTABLISHING AND FOUNDING THE LENOX RURAL FIRE DEPARTMENT. JOANN LATER BECAME THE CHIEF OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND TOOK GREAT JOY FROM HELPING THE COMMUNITY.

JOANN WAS A GREAT PILLAR OF THE COMMUNITY, A PERSON THAT PEOPLE COULD COME TO WITH THEIR PROBLEMS AND SEEK ADVICE AND TRUST THE ANSWERS THEY WOULD RECEIVE.

WE KNOW THIS EXECUTION WILL NOT BRING JOANN BACK, BUT IT DESTROYED AN EVIL PERSON THAT OTHERWISE WOULD BE STILL WALKING THIS EARTH. THE STATE OF MISSOURI DID NOT EXECUTE AN INNOCENT MAN TODAY, FORREST'S ACTIONS ARE WHAT PUT HIM TO DEATH.

FORREST AND HIS FAMILY HAVE HAD THIRTEEN YEARS, FIVE MONTHS AND TWO DAYS TO SAY GOOD BYE TO EACH OTHER, WE WERE ROBBED OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY GOODBYE TO JOANN. TODAY MARKS THE END OF A LONG, PAINFUL AND TRAGIC CHAPTER IN OUR LIVES AND WE ARE RELIEVED THAT JUSTICE HAS FINALLY BEEN SERVED.

JOANN CAN NOW REST IN PEACE.

"I realize this may sound harsh, but as a father and former lawman, I really don't care if it's by lethal injection, by the electric chair, firing squad, hanging, the guillotine or being fed to the lions."

“There are lots of extremely smug and self-satisfied people in what would be deemed lower down in society, who also deserve to be pulled up. In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything.”
