Leonard Sheldon Taylor - Missouri Execution - February 7, 2023

    Angela Rowe and children

    Facts of the Crime:

On December 3, 2004, a police officer in Jennings, a suburb of St. Louis, responded to calls from relatives worried that they had not heard from Angela Rowe or her children for several days. The officer went to the home where Rowe lived with her boyfriend, Leonard Taylor.

The officer found the bodies of Rowe, 28, and her three children, daughters: Alexus Conley, 10, and AcQreya Conley, 6; and her son, Tyrese Conley, 5. They had been shot. Taylor had boarded a Southwest Airlines flight from Lambert International Field to Ontario, Calif., on the morning of November 26, 2004. He claimed the victims were still alive when he left. Witnesses and phone records indicated Taylor had already murdered them before his departure. From California, Taylor had traveled to Texas, Alabama and Kentucky before police and federal marshals caught him in the back of a car in Madisonville. A speck of blood on one of three pair of Taylor's specatacles police found in his luggage matched Rowe's blood, a DNA test later revealed.

CLAYTON (AP) -- A judge this morning sentenced Leonard Taylor to die by lethal injection for fatally shooting his girlfriend and her three children in Jennings in 2004.

In St. Louis County Circuit Court today, Judge James R. Hartenbach imposed the sentences of four death penalties that a jury recommended on Feb. 29.

Hartenbach also rejected requests for a new trial. Those requests were made by a trio of defense lawyers who represented Taylor and by Taylor himself. In his written statement to the court, Taylor called his convictions "manifest injustice.'' Taylor is 43.

After the sentencing, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch said: "It was an incredibly vile crime to kill children like that. He earned his four death sentences in this case.''

On Dec. 3, 2004, Jennings police Officer Freddie Lee responded to calls from worried relatives and went to the house where Taylor lived in the 2000 block of Park Lane. He found Angela Rowe, 28, shot four times. Then he found the bodies of her three children, daughters: Alexus Conley, 10, and AcQreya Conley, 6; and her son, Tyrese Conley, 5.

Members of the Rowe and Conley families had testified during the punishment phase of Taylor's trial about how much they missed Rowe and the children. They didn't attend the brief sentencing today.

Taylor didn't testify at his trial. He already is serving a sentence of 100 years in prison for the rape in St. Louis of a 16-year-old in 2000.

After the shootings, prosecutors Alan Key and J. B. Lasater said, Taylor fled to California, Texas, Alabama and Kentucky where he was captured in Madisonville by a team of police and federal marshals.

In addition to the death penalties, Hartenbach sentenced Taylor to life in prison on four counts of weapons violations.

"There is a point in the history of a society when it becomes so pathologically soft and tender that among other things it sides even with those who harm it, criminals, and does this quite seriously and honestly. Punishing somehow seems unfair to it, and it is certain that imagining ‘punishment’ and ‘being supposed to punish’ hurts it, arouses fear in it." Friedrich Nietzsche
