    Donald Lavell Craig - Ohio

    Summary of Offense:

    Death Sentence (1)

On February 28, 1996, Craig abducted, raped, and murdered 12-year-old Roseanna Davenport in a vacant home in Akron. Roseanna, who disappeared after visiting the daughter of Craig's girlfriend, was found five days later in a nearby basement. DNA from semen found on the crotch of Roseanna's underwear, tested in 1996, failed to link Craig to the murder. The case lay dormant until the Akron police reopened it in 2002 as a result of a federal "cold case" grant. DNA testing was again performed, using more advanced technology, and Craig was identified as Roseanna's killer.

    Death Sentence (2)

On January 26, 1995, Craig murdered 13-year-old Malissa Thomas in Akron. Craig kidnapped Malissa and took her to an abandoned house where he bound, raped, and strangled her. Her body was found a week later, frozen to death. DNA testing identified Craig as the source of semen found on Malissa's body.

Former Akron man on death row dies in hospital

A former Akron man who sat on Ohio’s death row for the kidnapping, rapes and murders of two Akron girls has died.

Donald Lavell Craig died at a medical center in Columbus. He was 52.

In 2004 and 2006, juries convicted Craig of the crimes that had occurred about a decade earlier. Cold-case police detectives, with help from scientists using advanced techniques, connected Craig to both killings through DNA evidence.

Craig’s first victim, in 1995, was 13-year-old Malissa Thomas. But that case did not go to trial until Craig was already on death row for similar offenses against 12-year-old Roseanna Davenport, who disappeared after leaving a friend’s South Maple Street house in 1996.

The Thomas and Davenport cases were eerily similar. Each girl was abducted, bound, raped and found murdered in a vacant house in Akron.

    Appeals die with child killer

The Ohio Supreme Court today dismissed a case against an Akron man on death row for the murders of two Akron girls because he died.

Donald Lavell Craig ultimately died from colon cancer.

Craig, 52, died last month in the Franklin Medical Center, a state prison facility in Columbus, nearly five years after his original date to die by lethal injection. He had been hospitalized since May.

Craig was convicted of abducting, raping and strangling two Akron girls, ages 12 and 13, in 1995 and 1996. The cases were solved years later when DNA evidence linked Craig to the slayings. He had been on death row since 2004.

The court had postponed Craig's death sentence while he appealed his convictions.
