New Hampshire House overrides veto of death penalty repeal
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire House has overridden Republican Gov. Chris Sununu's veto of a bill to repeal the state's death penalty.
The 247-123 vote Thursday in the House sends the issue back to the Senate, which voted 17-6 in favor of repeal last month. If that Senate tally holds, it would exceed the two-thirds majority necessary to override the veto.
New Hampshire's death penalty applies in only seven scenarios, the state hasn't executed anyone since 1939 and there is only one inmate on death row. The repeal bill would not apply retroactively to Michael Addison, who killed Manchester Police Officer Michael Briggs in 2006, but capital punishment supporters argue courts might interpret it differently.
Sununu vetoed the bill last month at a community center named in honor of Briggs.

NH death penalty officially repealed after lawmakers override governor's veto
NH Senate vote comes week after House voted to override veto

CONCORD, N.H. — The New Hampshire Senate voted Thursday to override the governor's veto of a death penalty repeal bill.
The Senate voted 16-8 to override the veto, reaching the two-thirds-majority threshold by one vote.
The vote came a week after the House voted to override the veto, also reaching the two-thirds majority by just a single vote.
The votes in both chambers mean the death penalty has been repealed in New Hampshire.
Gov. Chris Sununu expressed his "disappointment" a statement released after the Senate's vote.
"I have consistently stood with law enforcement, families of crime victims, and advocates for justice in opposing a repeal of the death penalty because it is the right thing to do. I am incredibly disappointed that the Senate chose to override my veto," Sununu said.
