Death penalty on table in Vegas teen slaying case

A Nevada 19-year-old may face the death penalty in the abduction, rape and slaying of a high school sophomore whose charred body was discovered over the weekend in a vacant lot not far from her northwest Las Vegas home, a prosecutor said Thursday.

A Clark County district attorney panel will consider in coming weeks whether to seek capital punishment for Javier Righetti in the slaying of 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba, Chief Deputy District Attorney Christopher Lalli said outside court.

Righetti appeared in shackles for a brief initial appearance before Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Conrad Hafen, who set an Oct. 14 evidence hearing on felony murder, kidnapping, sexual assault with a minor and robbery charges. The judge ordered Righetti held at the Clark County jail without bail.

Righetti's lawyer, Tim O'Brien, said review by a death penalty panel was "not unexpected" in the case.

The deputy public defender said outside court that he hadn't had a chance to fully review police accounts of Righetti's arrest. He said Righetti was in protective custody on suicide watch at the jail in downtown Las Vegas.

A police report says Righetti confessed to detectives that he followed Otremba to rob her while she walked home from a nearby middle school, and that he raped and stabbed her with a kitchen knife. He told investigators he got help from a friend to buy gasoline and matches and return to the slaying scene, where he doused Otremba's body and set it on fire, according to a police report.

The Clark County coroner said the girl was stabbed more than 40 times and burned beyond recognition.

Righetti also admitted to another sex attack and robbery, which police said was being investigated.

The slaying shocked Arbor View High School, where Otremba was a sophomore and a member of the marching band. Hundreds of people turned up for a Wednesday evening candlelight memorial in the parking lot at the school about 12 miles northwest of downtown Las Vegas.

Police have characterized the slaying as a random act. They say Righetti and Otremba didn't know each other.

Otremba's mother reported her missing after Otremba text-messaged a little after 6:30 p.m. Friday to say she was walking home, but never arrived.

A search the next morning by friends and family members found her body in the vacant lot not far from U.S. Highway 95.

Police arrested Righetti on Monday, after Daniel Ortiz, 19, told detectives that he drove Righetti early Saturday to a gas station and dropped him off at the vacant lot where the body was later found. Ortiz has not been charged with a crime.

DA to seek death penalty in 15-year-old girl’s kidnapping, slaying

‘Aggravating circumstances’ included torture and mutilation

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Javier Righetti, who is accused of kidnapping, killing, then burning the body of 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba last month in Las Vegas, Clark County District Attorney David Roger said today.

“We have decided to seek capital punishment against the defendant,” Roger said. “There are a number of aggravating circumstances which exist in the case.”

Righetti, 19, confessed to attacking Otremba, a sophomore and band member at Arbor View High School, while she was walking home on Sept. 2, according to Metro Police.

“He kidnapped, raped and robbed our victim. All three of those crimes are aggravating circumstances,” Roger said. “He stabbed our victim over 80 times and went back and burned her remains. We believe the aggravators involving torture and mutilation apply.”

Roger said that in addition to the charges in Otremba’s death, they have also charged Righetti in a rape and kidnapping case involving another young girl last March.

“If convicted of those charges, he would be facing additional aggravating circumstances,” Roger said.

The decision to seek capital punishment in the case was made at a meeting Thursday by the district attorney’s Death Penalty Review Committee, he said.

Roger said it was difficult to predict when the matter might come before a jury.

“These murder cases seem to go on for a lengthy period of time,” he said. He said defense attorneys often ask for cases to be continued because they need more time to prepare a defense.

“We’d like to see it tried within the next 6 months,” he said. “But I think that’s probably wishful thinking.”

A grand jury indicted Righetti on Oct. 7, charging him with robbery with use of a deadly weapon, 1st-degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon, 2 counts of sexual assault with a child under 16 with use of a deadly weapon and murder with use of a deadly weapon in the Otremba attack.

The grand jury also indicted him on charges of attempted robbery, battery with the intent to commit sexual assault by strangulation, 1st-degree kidnapping, attempted sexual assault of a minor under 16 and sexual assault with a minor under 16 for a March 8 attack on another girl.

Righetti was arrested at his home about a mile from where Otremba’s body was found. Police say he allegedly confessed to both crimes after his friend’s girlfriend called police saying he and her boyfriend had acted suspiciously the night of Otremba's murder.

According to an arrest report, he told detectives he followed Otremba to rob and rape her, then killed her with a kitchen knife from his house.

Righetti, who was arrested Sept. 6, is currently being held without bail in the Clark County Detention Center.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 20 in Clark County District Court before Judge Michelle Leavitt.

Las Vegas Teen Due in Court in Death Penalty Case

A Las Vegas teenager facing the death penalty intends to plead not guilty in the mutilation slaying of a 15-year-old high school sophomore and a sex attack involving another teenage girl.

Javier Righetti is due to face a judge Thursday for the first time since prosecutors announced they'll seek to have him executed. His lawyer says he'll plead not guilty.

Righetti is accused of stabbing 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba more than 80 times late Sept. 2, and of kidnapping, robbing and sexually attacking the other girl last March.

Otremba's charred body was found Sept. 3 not far from Arbor View High School and her northwest Las Vegas home. Prosecutors allege Righetti carved letters into Otremba's body, and he told police he'd committed rapes since he was 12.

Vegas teen pleads not guilty in death penalty case

A Las Vegas teenager pleaded not guilty to the kidnapping, rape and mutilation slaying of a 15-year-old high school sophomore in his first court appearance since prosecutors announced they'll seek to have him put to death if he's convicted.

The 19-year-old Javier (HAH'-vee-air) Righetti appeared in court Thursday in Las Vegas with wrists and ankles shackled. His trial is set for next Oct. 16.

Righetti is charged with the deadly attack on Alyssa Otremba in September, and with assaulting another teenage girl in March.

The girl's mother, Jennifer Otremba, declined to speak about the case outside the courtroom but said she wanted justice for her daughter.

Otremba's charred body was found Sept. 3 not far from her northwest Las Vegas home.

Prosecutors allege she was stabbed more than 80 times.

Stones are what remain at the site of Alyssa Otremba's slaying. A cross was recently removed

Permanent memorial to slain Vegas teen forthcoming

Calls by residents in a northwest Las Vegas neighborhood to set up a permanent memorial for a slain teen appear to be successful.

One neighbor told FOX5 late Tuesday the property owner where an existing memorial for Alyssa Otremba stands approved for a permanent tribute.

According to a source, a tree will be planted and a plaque will be placed as part of the permanent memorial. In addition, items from the previous memorial were removed by student's at the girl's former school, Arbor View High School, and will be given to Otremba's parents, that source told FOX5.

There was no word on when the memorial will be built.

Otremba, 15, was slain while walking home from a friend's house in 2011.

Neighbors have maintained two memorials to the teen, one of which is located at the site of her death, but the area has become a construction site. Some neighbors were not happy about the memorial having been taken down.

A group had been gathering support for a permanent memorial to Alyssa in the desert near Grand Teton Drive and Interstate 95.

"It's so unbelievably horrible to me to think that somebody could do that to somebody," neighbor John Watson said.

Alyssa was raped and stabbed to death. Watson didn't know her, but used to see her walking through the neighborhood.

Watson on Monday noticed bulldozers and posts lining the area where the teen was slain.

"I mean, you gotta move it [the memorial], but it would be horrible if there wasn't some kind of memory. She was the little lost girl in the desert," Watson said.

Father Godron Hines blessed the memorial located at the scene shortly after Alyssa died. He, too, hopes the memorial will be saved.

"It would be a nice tribute to her, and especially for the family to know that she is being remembered by the neighbors," he said.

Watson said that before the property was sold, a few neighbors considered appealing to Las Vegas City Council. He said he was told nothing could be done.

Javier Righetti is accused of Alyssa Otremba's 2011 slaying. His trial is scheduled to begin in March 2014. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Family and Former Neighbors Remember Murdered Teen

Two years ago, 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba went missing in the far northwest valley. She was walking to her home when she was abducted, raped and set on fire.

Alyssa's mom Jennifer Otremba said it's as if time has stood still for the past two years. It has been a difficult time for the Otremba family.

"It blows my mind that two years have gone by, because it still feels very real," Jennifer Otremba said. "We're all very touched by the support, prayers of the community, and we just really appreciate it."

Former neighbors invited the Otremba family back to the neighborhood they used to call home.

Neighbor John Watkins said supporting Alyssa's family is just what neighbors should do, and he's working to create a permanent memorial for the murdered teen.

"From my upstairs window, I can look right down on the murder scene," Watkins said.

Alyssa was ambushed in Sept. 2011 in a tunnel near her home. Police said she was raped and then stabbed at least 40 times. Her body was dumped and burned in the desert.

Investigators had a sketch of a suspect who turned out to be 19-year-old Javier Righetti.

Righetti's trial is set for next year. He faces the death penalty, if convicted.

Alyssa's family said the loss is something they will deal with in time, but it's comforting to know so many of their neighbors are still there for them.

"There is a little bit of a sense that our life is kind of on hold. I don't think it's going to be complete closure whenever we get through that," Jennifer Otremba added.

There was a temporary memorial for Alyssa that was recently taken down because of a new housing development.

Family members said the developer has agreed to plant a tree in Alyssa's memory. Neighbors also want to name a nearby park in her memory.

Trial date delayed for man accused of stabbing and burning 15-year-old girl

Javier Righetti, the man accused of killing 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba during a brutal attack, appeared in a Las Vegas court this morning.

His trial was scheduled to begin Oct. 16 but his attorneys requested more time to prepare for the trial.

The new trial date is now May 21, 2013.

Javier Righetti pleaded not guilty last October for the Sept. 2, 2011 kidnapping, rape and slaying of Otremba.

Police say that he confessed to them that he stabbed Otremba more than 80 times and then burned her body in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Righetti also allegedly confessed to another attempted sexual assault of a girl just a few months prior and told police that he had committed other rapes since the age of 12.

The district attorney's office has said that it intends to seek the death penalty in the case.

Otremba's burned body was found in a desert lot near Grand Teton and Oso Blanca on Sept. 3.

Otremba had gone to a friend's house to pick up schoolwork and was on her way home when the attack happened.

Righetti was 19 at the time of the crime.

Trial date set for man accused of killing 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba

A 2016 trial date has been set for the man accused of killing 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba in September 2011 as she was walking in the desert near her home in the Centennial Hills area.

Javier Righetti is accused of raping the young girl and stabbing her multiple times in a tunnel near her home. He then set her body on fire.

Otremba's mother reported her missing after Alyssa sent her a text that she would be home in 30 minutes, but never arrived. Police looked for the teenager, but did not locate her at that time.

Friends and family were searching the desert near the girl's home the next day when they came across a body that was badly burned and unrecognizable. The coroner confirmed it was Otremba a couple of days later.

Righetti was turned in by a friend he had asked for help after allegedly killing Otremba. He was arrested shortly after.

Righetti was 19 years old at the time and reportedly confessed to the crime. He also confessed to an earlier robbery and rape in March of the same year.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Righetti. His trial has been rescheduled or delayed several times.

A judge set Righetii's new trial date for March 15, 2016.

Otremba family still waiting for trial

It has been 3.5 years since 15-year-old Alyssa Otremba was found dead near her home in the northwest part of the valley.

After another delay, her alleged killer will not go to trial until at least this time next year.

Javier Righetti was indicted in connection with Otremba's murder in October of 2011. His trial was originally scheduled to start a year later, but after four postponements he is now scheduled to go to trial March 15, 2016.

Otremba's mother said she understands the delays as long as her family only has to go through the process once, "She was a lot of fun, a lot of energy. A lot of joy to be around."

Jennifer Otremba still wears a green ribbon that reflects her daughter Alyssa's birthstone as well as the life she lived even if it ended at just 15 years old.

"We are just trying to stay strong," Otremba said.

The family said the 15 year old was walking home from borrowing a text book, but never made it there. Her mother said it was a couple hours before she panicked and called police.

"I honestly thought she ran in to friends. That she was just hanging around with other friends. I never would have dreamt in my wildest dreams that she was gone," Otremba said.

Homes now stand in what was an empty desert lot near Oso Blanca and Grand Teton where Alyssa's body was found more than three years ago.

Her mother still remembers getting the news that her daughter had been found raped, stabbed and burned by her alleged killer, "It was gut-wrenching."

Jennifer Otremba admits it was initially frustrating waiting for Javier Righetti to go to trial. She said after 3.5 years she has learned the complexities of the trial process, especially given the fact that it involves the death penalty.

"I am kind of learning some of the steps in the legal system, and it just takes some time. So, I've kind of backed off and I'm being more patient," Otremba said.

Otremba said she will wait for March of 2016, especially if it means she does not have to sit through two trials.

In the meantime, she is working on exactly what she will say when she gets to address Righetti, "I'm still trying to gather my thoughts, because some day I will get to speak to him."

Righetti's trial is currently set to start on March 15, 2016.

Man pleads guilty, faces death penalty in Vegas girl slaying

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to capital murder in a case that shocked Las Vegas for its brutality: the rape, torture, killing and mutilation of a 15-year-old girl abducted on her way home from school.

Javier Righetti pleaded guilty Feb. 11 with no promise that he won't be put to death for the September 2011 slaying of Arbor View High School sophomore Alyssa Otremba, who had texted her mom that she was walking home.

A jury next month will consider whether Righetti should be executed.

Defense attorney Christy Craig says Righetti decided to spare everyone a long trial.

Righetti admits kidnapping, sexually assaulting and stabbing Otremba dozens of times before burning her corpse in northwest Las Vegas.

Prosecutors say Righetti told police he wanted to prove he was tough.
