Anthony Edric Pinkston Takes Plea Deal, Murder Charges Dropped, Sentenced to 10 years

Two murder trials commence in Lumberton

Jury selection began this morning in a pair of unrelated murder trials in Robeson County.

Anthony Edric Pinkston, 31, is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 57-year-old Andy Oxendine.

Pinkston could face the death penalty if convicted.

According to investigators, the Laurinburg man was among a group of people that went to the Lumberton home of Oxendine's son on Dec. 7, 2007 and knocked on the door. When the door opened, Pinkton and another man rushed inside.

Pinkton allegedly shot and killed Oxendine with a shotgun during a struggle. Three other people were struck, but none were seriously injured, according to authorities.

Pinkton is represented by attorneys Wayne Bray and Paul Herzog. Assistant District Attorney Joseph Osman is prosecuting, and Superior Court Judge Robert F. Floyd is presiding.

Jury selection also began this morning in the murder trial of a Robeson County painter accused of killing another man over a pay dispute two years ago.

Joshua Eugene Speights, 21, was shot in the head on Oct. 11, 2008. Henry Stephens, 44, of Lumberton was charged with first-degree murder.

The shooting was reported around 7 a.m., lawmen said. Witnesses said Speights, who had worked for Stephens, went to the painter's home that morning to collect money owed to him for past work.

The men argued over Speights' pay, authorities said, and Speights was shot dead.

Deputies found the body in Stephens' backyard, lawmen said.

Assistant District Attorney Martha Duvall is prosecuting the case, and Stephens is represented by Lumberton lawyer Carlton Mansfield. Superior Court Judge Gary L. Locklear is presiding.

Murder charge dropped in plea deal

A capital murder charged against a Laurinburg man was dismissed in a plea agreement this week.

Anthony Edric Pinkston, 31, was originally charged with first-degree murder in the 2007 shooting death of Andy Oxendine, according to Robeson County assistant district attorney Joseph Osman.

Pinkston pleaded guilty to a series of related offenses on Monday. He was sentenced to seven to 10 years in prison.

Oxendine was killed during a home invasion involving six people, according to investigators.

Osman said the state had a limited amount of evidence linking Pinkston to the house where Oxendine was shot. Pinkston was one of two people in a vehicle parked outside of Oxendine’s home, according to Osman.

As part of the agreement, Pinkston pleaded guilty to armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robber, second-degree kidnapping and conspiracy to commit burglary.

Pinskton has prior convictions for robbery, kidnapping and assault.

Also Monday, Loretta Goins, a co-defendant in the Pinkston case, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Oxendine’s death, Osman said. Goins was originally charged with first-degree murder .

Goins also pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary, armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Osman said she faces a penalty of 18 to 23 years when she is sentenced.

In addition, Goins pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree kidnapping. She faces a sentence of two to three years on one of those counts, while sentence is suspended for the other two counts. Goins will serve 36 months’ probation for the suspended sentences, according to Osman.

Four other people are still awaiting trial in the murder. Donald McEachin, Ronald Montrell Jiggetts, Rashawn Thompson and Andy Dwayne Locklear are each charged with first-degree murder, two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, according to court records.
