Death penalty sought in fatal beating outside restaurant
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against a 31-year-old man accused in the 2009 robbery and beating death of a man outside a Northeast El Paso restaurant.
Jury selection in the capital murder trial against Felipe Devora is scheduled to begin next month. Potential jurors will be questioned individually. The process could take several weeks before the trial begins in the 384th District Court.
Police allege Devora attacked Joe Jiles, 67, on Feb. 7, 2009, outside Mo'z Bar B Que, 4011 Fred Wilson. After beating Jiles, police said, Devora allegedly set Jiles' body on fire.
Devora is also accused of raping a woman at a Northeast apartment complex five hours after Jiles' death.
