Mom Sentenced to 2 Life Terms for Killing Twins With Samurai Sword

Police Say Monica McCarrick "Butchered" Children With Sword Before Slashing Her Own Throat

FAIRFIELD, Calif. -- A 28-year-old mother made her first court appearance in the deaths of her 3-year-old twin daughters.

Monica McCarrick was arraigned last week on murder charges from her hospital bed.

She's now out of the hospital and in jail.

McCarrick has reportedly been on suicide watch, as prosecutors prepare to try her for butchering the children with a samurai sword before trying to take her own life and setting her third floor apartment on fire.

Neighbors noticed the fire and broke down the door to help.

One neighbor, Andre Douglas, told the Vacaville Reporter that he saw a bloody sword and a bottle of pills in the hallway.

McCarrick was found with self-inflicted stab wounds, according to police.

An autopsy shows 3-year-olds Tori and Lily Ball died of multiple stab wounds.

McCarrick is also linked to a 2006 domestic violence case in San Diego as well as a child support case from 2009 involving the twins' father, Michael William Ball, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Officials say McCarrick is being held on suspicion of two counts of murder, two counts of child abuse resulting in death, one count of arson and one count of destruction of evidence.

Deputy District Attorney Terry Ray said her office has yet to decide on whether or not to seek the death penalty in the case.

D.A. will not seek death penalty against mother in slashing case

A Fairfield mother accused of killing her twin daughters before trying to burn down their apartment pleaded not guilty in Solano County Superior Court on Friday.

Monica McCarrick, who has been held for trial after a preliminary hearing wrapped up last month, is facing two counts each of murder and child abuse resulting in death.

However, Deputy District Attorney Terry Ray announced that her office would not seek the death penalty against McCarrick during the brief hearing.

McCarrick, was arrested Oct. 12, 2010, the victims' birthday, after Fairfield police and fire crews responded to a blaze at a North Texas Street apartment where they found the children, Tori and Lily Ball, dead of multiple stab wounds and McCarrick suffering from apparently self-inflicted wounds.

Superior Court Judge Peter B. Foor set 8:30 a.m. June 15 for a readiness conference and trial setting in the matter.

Jury finds Fairfield mother was sane when she killed twin daughters with sword

A Fairfield woman was facing life in prison without parole Wednesday after a jury found her to be sane when she killed her twin daughters with a sword back in October 2010.

A Solano County Superior Court jury on Tuesday found that Monica McCarrick, 29, was legally sane when she used a samurai sword to kill the 3-year-old twins, Tori and Lily Ball, on Oct. 10, 2010, according to the Solano County District Attorney's Office.

Her daughters were found dead multiple stab and slash wounds near the door of McCarrick's burning apartment.

Fairfield police said McCarrick had tried to commit suicide after the killings by cutting herself and lighting fire to her third-floor apartment.

In court, McCarrick had pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity.

The jury convicted McCarrick on June 15 of two counts each of first-degree murder and assault on a child causing death.

During the trial, three doctors testified that McCarrick was legally insane the night of the murders, but the prosecution countered their testimonies by highlighting McCarrick’s history of methamphetamine use, which she admitted to using on a daily basis for years and as recently as three days before the incident to psychologists, according to reports.

California law states that defendants can no qualify for an insanity plea when tried for crimes committed while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

On Tuesday, the jury rejected McCarrick’s insanity plea and she was scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 6.

Prior to her conviction, the Solano County District Attorney refused to seek the death penalty for McCarrick, leaving the maximum sentence of life in prison. Because she was convicted of multiple murders, it was predicted that she would be denied the possibility of parole.

How oh how can someone kill their own kids, especially in such a violent manner???? Drugs? Not an excuse. Being a promiscuous gal? Not an excuse. For sure those little girls were loved by many. Whatever was in her mind, she didn't have to kill her kids. She could have taken the kids to a safe place and then offed herself, if that was her intention. OR better yet, could have gotten her self straight and started acting like a mother long before getting to this point.

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — A Fairfield mom convicted of murdering her twin toddler daughters has been sentenced to two life terms in prison without the possibility of parole.
The Reporter of Vacaville reports that a tearful Monica McCarrick told a Solano County court she was sorry and loved her daughters before she was sentenced on Monday.
A jury convicted the 29-year-old McCarrick in June of two counts of first-degree murder in the 2010 deaths of her daughters, Tori and Lily Ball, both 3 years old. It later found her sane.
Authorities say McCarrick stabbed the girls with a samurai sword before attempting to take her own life and set fire to her apartment.
McCarrick's attorney said her client was suffering paranoid delusions and believed her children were going to be enslaved and raped.
Prosecutors told jurors McCarrick's use of methamphetamine was to blame.

No murder can be so cruel that there are not still useful imbeciles who do gloss over the murderer and apologize.
